MSI Afterburner 4.6.5 Beta 4 was a genuine historical beta released through Guru3D and MSI’s official distribution channels. It used build 16358 and was especially relevant to newer graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 7900 family. However, it is no longer the current version. MSI lists 4.6.6 Final and 4.6.7 Beta, while Guru3D lists 4.6.7 Beta 3, build 17352, dated June 19, 2026.
For a new installation, use the latest official release instead of this archived beta. Beta 4 remains useful for historical testing, compatibility investigation, or reproducing an older software environment.

The original release was announced in the Guru3D forum’s Frontpage news section. The discussion and download were legitimate, but an old forum announcement should not be confused with a recommendation to install the same build today.

The main reason Beta 4 mattered was improved support for newer graphics cards. Its hardware database included upcoming Radeon RX 7900-series PCI device IDs, helping Afterburner recognize those cards and potentially expose compatible monitoring or tuning features.

That does not mean every RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX board would provide every voltage, clock, or fan-control option. Board firmware, the voltage controller, drivers, Windows security settings, and laptop or vendor restrictions can limit available controls.
Contemporaneous development discussion described Beta 4 as broadly similar to the preceding beta, with the RX 7900 device-ID additions being the notable change. Other changes discussed during the wider 4.6.5 beta cycle included:
- Adjustments to CPU base-clock estimation.
- A revised CPU-name packing method.
- Overlay layouts showing the first 16 thread-usage bars instead of eight.
- A new mini overlay layout.
- Compatibility limitations when Windows Core Isolation or HVCI blocked access to the OCMailbox interface.
These are development-cycle details and should not all be treated as Beta 4-exclusive features. Later beta and final builds combined additional changes, so feature lists that merge the entire 4.6.5 development cycle can be misleading.

MSI identifies MSI.com and Guru3D.com as the legitimate distribution sources and warns about phishing sites that distribute modified Afterburner installers.

Should you install Beta 4 today?
Usually, no. Choose a current official release if you want Afterburner for everyday gaming, monitoring, undervolting, or an in-game overlay. Newer releases are more appropriate for current graphics cards, drivers, and Windows configurations.

Beta 4 is reasonable only when you have a specific reason to reproduce an older setup, investigate an early RX 7900 recognition issue, compare behavior between versions, or test software compatibility. A genuine file can still be obsolete, and beta software can contain regressions.

Installing Afterburner alone does not guarantee higher frame rates. Any performance improvement comes from a stable tuning configuration and depends on the GPU, workload, thermal headroom, power limits, and silicon quality.
Safe installation procedure for a current version
- Open MSI’s official Afterburner page or Guru3D’s official download page.
- Confirm the product name, version, build, publisher, and release date.
- Download only from MSI.com or Guru3D.com.
- Scan the installer or archive with your security software.
- Back up or document existing Afterburner profiles before replacing an installation.
- Install Afterburner. Install RivaTuner Statistics Server, or RTSS, too if you need an in-game overlay or frame limiter.
- Open Afterburner and verify that the correct GPU is detected.
- For monitoring, open Settings → Monitoring, select a metric, and enable Show in On-Screen Display.
- Launch a game and confirm that both Afterburner and RTSS are running.
Afterburner handles GPU tuning and monitoring configuration. RTSS supplies the in-game on-screen display and frame-limiting functions. Basic tuning and in-application monitoring do not necessarily require RTSS.
If you insist on testing Beta 4
- Create a Windows restore point.
- Export or document your current Afterburner profiles.
- Use only an archive whose source and integrity you can verify.
- Record a published file hash if one is available; do not infer or invent one.
- Install without changing voltage or clock values initially.
- Check that the GPU is correctly identified.
- Test monitoring and the overlay before applying an overclock or undervolt.
- Run a short stability test, followed by a longer real-game test.
- Watch GPU temperature, hotspot temperature, power, clock behavior, and visual artifacts.
- Return to the stable version if the interface freezes, the overlay fails, or the system crashes.
Common problems and fixes
Voltage controls are missing
Detection does not guarantee access to voltage controls. Check board firmware, driver behavior, the supported voltage controller, laptop restrictions, and Windows security settings. In Afterburner, relevant options include Settings → General → Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring. Enabling them still cannot override hardware or firmware restrictions.

On some systems, Core Isolation or HVCI can prevent access to monitoring interfaces used by parts of the development builds. Disabling Windows security features is a significant security trade-off and should not be the first troubleshooting step.

The in-game overlay does not appear
- Confirm that RTSS is installed and running.
- Confirm that Afterburner is also running.
- Open Settings → Monitoring.
- Select each desired metric and enable Show in On-Screen Display.
- Check for conflicts with the game, anti-cheat software, ReShade, capture tools, or other monitoring utilities.
- If the issue began after an update, perform a clean reinstall.
The interface freezes
A Guru3D user reported intermittent GUI freezing with Beta 4 and said reverting to Beta 2 resolved it. This is an individual report, not proof that every Beta 4 installation has the problem, but it illustrates why an archived beta is a poor default choice for a new setup.
Overclocking causes crashes or artifacts
Click Reset, return all sliders to stock, disable automatic startup for the affected profile, and retest. If instability continues, check whether an OC Scanner result or another utility is being reapplied at startup. A Guru3D developer noted that an OC Scanner result can persist and load with Windows even after Afterburner is uninstalled; the OC Scanner interface includes a reset control.
Clean reinstall
- Disable Start with Windows in Afterburner.
- Close Afterburner and RTSS.
- Uninstall both applications.
- If troubleshooting continues, remove profiles and settings during uninstall.
- Reboot.
- Install a current official version from MSI or Guru3D.
- Reinstall RTSS if you need the overlay.
- Recreate profiles instead of immediately importing a configuration that may be damaged.
MSI recommends a full uninstall with profile removal followed by a clean installation when an overlay stops working after an update.

MSI states that Afterburner supports graphics cards from different brands, but the available controls vary by model. Firmware, laptop design, drivers, voltage hardware, and vendor restrictions determine whether features such as voltage adjustment, custom fan curves, or power-limit control are available. MSI also notes that custom fan curves may not work on laptops.
