The middle-click button is usually activated by pressing down on a mouse’s scroll wheel. In many desktop browsers, pressing the wheel on a link opens that link in a new tab; on other apps, the same input may close a tab, start auto-scroll, pan a drawing, paste selected text on some Linux systems, or do nothing. The result depends on the application, operating system, and mouse configuration.
Where is the middle mouse button?
On a conventional mouse, the left button is the primary button, the right button usually opens a context menu, and the third button is the middle button. It is most often the scroll wheel itself: put a finger on the wheel and press it straight down, then release. Pressing the wheel is different from rolling it to scroll.
Documentation may call this action “middle click,” “wheel click,” “scroll-wheel click,” “middle button,” or “button 3.” Those labels are common shorthand, but names vary between devices and software. Some mice have a stiff or shallow wheel press, a separate wheel-mode switch, or no physical wheel click at all. Touch mice may use a gesture instead, and a present button can be disabled or reassigned in mouse software.

Middle click is an input event, not a universal operating-system command. The active application decides what that event means. For example, Rhino exposes middle-button behavior in its own preferences, and CAD applications can assign different navigation actions.

Open a link in a new tab
- Move the pointer over a normal hyperlink.
- Press the scroll wheel straight down; do not roll it.
- In many desktop browsers, the destination opens in a new tab, usually without leaving the current page.
If nothing happens, make sure the item is an actual link rather than a JavaScript button or other page control. Browser preferences, extensions, mouse mappings, and the website can also affect the result. Common keyboard alternatives are Ctrl+left-click on Windows or Linux and Command+left-click on macOS, subject to browser settings. You can also right-click and choose the new-tab option.
Close a browser tab with middle click
Move the pointer over the tab itself and press the wheel. This commonly closes that tab. If it does not, use the browser’s close-tab command or press Ctrl+W on Windows/Linux or Command+W on macOS. Check for mouse software that has reassigned the wheel click if the action fails in several browsers.

How behavior differs by platform
Windows
Common desktop browsers often use middle click to open a link in a new tab, close a tab, or start auto-scroll. Other programs define their own actions. Compatible manufacturer software can assign a different function, and the options depend on the mouse model.

Mac applications can respond to a middle-button event, but a standard Mac trackpad does not normally have a physical middle button. An external mouse may provide one, while advanced remapping can require manufacturer software or a third-party utility. For example, a macOS remapping utility may request Accessibility permission so it can detect mouse actions and apply assignments; only grant that access to software you trust.

Linux
Linux desktops commonly support middle-click paste from the primary selection in X11-oriented workflows: select text with the mouse, move to a compatible destination, and press the wheel. This selection is distinct from the conventional clipboard used by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. The behavior is not universal across Linux: Wayland sessions, desktop environments, toolkits, terminals, and individual applications may handle it differently, and an app can disable it. Older Red Hat documentation describes the three-button paste convention; treat it as a useful Linux-specific possibility, not a guarantee for every installation.
ChromeOS and other systems
Behavior is generally determined by the browser or active application. Test on the device and in the app where you need the action rather than assuming a desktop convention applies everywhere.

Test whether middle click works
- In a browser, middle-click an ordinary link and see whether a new tab opens.
- Middle-click an open tab to check whether it closes.
- Test in a second application that is expected to use the middle button. On a compatible Linux setup, you can also test primary-selection paste in a text field.
- If available, use an input tester or the operating system’s diagnostic tools to see whether a middle-button event is being received.
- Test the mouse on another computer if you can.
If middle click works in some apps but not others, the difference is likely application behavior or configuration. If it does nothing anywhere, investigate the mouse, connection, driver, firmware, or button mapping. If it triggers the wrong action, a profile or remapping tool may be responsible. A wheel can continue to scroll even when its separate press switch has failed.

- Press rather than roll. Push the wheel vertically down. Avoid pressing a nearby wheel-mode button by mistake.
- Try another application. A particular website, browser, or program may not use middle click for the action you expect.
- Check the mouse assignment. In the device utility, look for labels such as Middle button, Wheel click, Button 3, Scroll click, button assignments, gestures, or app-specific profiles. Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center can configure supported Microsoft mice and Surface devices, but available choices depend on the hardware.
- Temporarily disable remappers. Test without vendor mouse software, macro tools, accessibility utilities, automation apps, or browser extensions that alter input. Re-enable them one at a time to find a conflict.
- Reconnect the mouse. Try another USB port, reconnect the wireless receiver, re-pair Bluetooth, charge or replace the battery, or test wired mode if supported.
- Review profiles and firmware. Check for a stored onboard profile or per-application assignment. Updates can cause model-specific problems; individual reports about a firmware or software update are not evidence that the same issue affects other mice.
- Test another computer. If the button fails there too, a hardware problem becomes more likely. If it works, focus on the original computer’s settings, software, or connection.
- Consider switch failure or missing hardware. The wheel’s scrolling encoder and click switch are separate mechanisms. The wheel may scroll normally even if the switch no longer sends a middle-button event. Some touch or compact mice simply do not include a conventional click.
Middle click without a middle-click button
- For opening a link, use Ctrl+left-click on Windows/Linux or Command+left-click on macOS, or use the right-click menu.
- For closing tabs, use Ctrl+W or Command+W.
- Check whether your touchpad supports a configurable gesture that produces a middle-button action. Gesture support varies by device and operating system.
- If another physical button is available, assign it to middle click in the mouse maker’s software or an operating-system or third-party remapper.
- If the hardware lacks the function or its wheel switch is broken, choose a mouse with a documented clickable wheel or a dedicated third button.
Third-party remappers can require Accessibility or related permissions on macOS and may not work in secure or elevated applications. They can also conflict with vendor software. In competitive games, macros or rapid-fire mappings can violate game rules or trigger anti-cheat enforcement; do not assume a mapping is allowed just because a utility offers it.

Remapping the middle button
Start with the mouse manufacturer’s utility if your device supports one. Depending on the model, it may let you assign a keyboard shortcut, back/forward, media control, application-specific command, macro, or “do nothing.” Check that the utility supports your operating system and connection mode; “compatible with Mac” does not necessarily mean every button can be configured on macOS.
Operating-system controls differ by platform and version, so there is no single reliable menu path for all computers. A third-party utility can add options for a generic mouse, but check its permissions, compatibility with elevated or protected apps, and interaction with other remappers. If you map the wheel click to a different action, remember that browser tab shortcuts and CAD navigation may stop working until you restore the original assignment.
Choosing a mouse for reliable middle click
- Confirm the wheel actually clicks. A visible wheel does not prove that it sends a middle-button event. Look for “middle click,” “middle button,” or “scroll-wheel click” in the device documentation.
- Check for separate wheel modes. A nearby mode button may change scroll behavior rather than act as the middle button.
- Verify remapping on your platform. Software support may differ across Windows, macOS, Linux, and connection types.
- Consider onboard profiles and app-specific mappings. Onboard memory can preserve some assignments without background software, but not every device stores every function. Profiles are useful for CAD or gaming, though they can make behavior seem inconsistent when they switch automatically.
- Try the wheel feel. If you middle-click often, an overly stiff or shallow switch can be uncomfortable. A side button remapped to middle click may be easier for some users.
- Weigh the whole mouse, not just this feature. Many conventional mice include a basic clickable wheel, so paying extra solely for middle click may not be worthwhile. Prioritize ergonomics, handedness, connectivity, and other controls you actually need.
As examples rather than endorsements, Logitech’s MX Anywhere 3S business datasheet lists a physical middle-click function among its six buttons and names several compatible operating systems, with caveats by connection and software. Logitech’s MX Master 3S is another productivity-focused model family with customizable controls; confirm the selected model’s assignment options for your OS before buying. A premium productivity mouse may suit someone who also values its form or programmable controls, but it is not necessary just to get a wheel click.
