Many newer U.S.-market Motorola phones support both VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi), but there is no Motorola-wide guarantee. Compatibility depends on the exact model number and variant, carrier, software, provisioning, and IMEI approval. Before buying or switching, check Motorola’s carrier table and the carrier’s own compatibility tool.
VoLTE and VoWiFi are different features
VoLTE means voice calls use the carrier’s 4G LTE network. It is increasingly essential for normal cellular calling because U.S. carriers have retired or reduced older 3G networks. Verizon describes HD Voice as a VoLTE-based service that also allows simultaneous voice calls and LTE data. See Verizon’s HD Voice FAQ.
VoWiFi, usually called Wi-Fi Calling in phone settings, routes calls and carrier text messages through a Wi-Fi connection when cellular coverage is weak or unavailable. It uses your regular mobile number; it is not the same as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, Google Voice, or another app-based calling service. Motorola notes that both the phone and carrier must support Wi-Fi Calling. See Motorola’s compatibility guidance and Wi-Fi Calling instructions.
A phone can support VoLTE without supporting Wi-Fi Calling on the same network. Treat them as separate checks.

Quick answer by major U.S. carrier
AT&T
An unlocked Motorola phone is not automatically supported on AT&T. The exact device and variant must appear on AT&T’s approved-device list and pass AT&T’s current compatibility process. AT&T also says some approved devices may need a software update to enable HD Voice, Wi-Fi Calling, video calling, advanced messaging, or 5G. Check the AT&T approved-device list.
For Wi-Fi Calling, look for the option in the phone’s network settings. AT&T says that if the Wi-Fi Calling option is absent, the phone is not compatible with the feature on AT&T. See AT&T’s Wi-Fi Calling setup guidance. Because carrier lists and software requirements can change, an exact model number and IMEI are more useful than a generic “Moto G” or “unlocked Motorola” description.
Verizon
Verizon requires a BYOD phone to be unlocked and to have compatible hardware and software. Its activation process uses the device ID or IMEI. Use Verizon’s BYOD guidance before purchasing or porting a number.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile generally supports a broad range of unlocked phones, but compatibility still depends on the device’s frequencies, VoLTE support, IMEI, software, and carrier provisioning. T-Mobile recommends checking the phone’s IMEI and confirming support for VoLTE and Extended Range LTE in its BYOD guide.
T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling requires an active account, a compatible device, an emergency address, and a suitable internet connection. T-Mobile states that Wi-Fi Calling requires at least 2 Mbps upload and download speeds and does not support satellite internet or a phone hotspot as the Wi-Fi source. Why LTE or 5G does not guarantee calling features
LTE hardware alone does not prove that a phone can place carrier voice calls. VoLTE depends on carrier-approved IMS configuration, provisioning, supported bands, emergency-calling requirements, and an approved software build. A 5G phone can likewise lack a specific carrier’s Wi-Fi Calling or VoLTE support.

Wi-Fi Calling is more restrictive because the carrier must certify and provision the feature for the exact phone variant. Regional models, imported phones, and versions originally sold by another carrier may have different firmware, bands, SIM profiles, or emergency-service support.
How to check a Motorola phone before buying or switching
- Find the exact model number. On the phone, open Settings → About phone → Model or Model number. The retail name alone is not sufficient; “Moto G Power,” for example, covers multiple years and variants.
- Open Motorola’s U.S. carrier-compatibility page for that model. Check separate entries for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and the specific MVNO you plan to use. The entry should explicitly mention both VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling.
- Run the carrier’s IMEI check. Use T-Mobile’s BYOD process or Verizon’s BYOD process. For AT&T, compare the exact model with its approved-device guidance.
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked. “Unlocked” improves flexibility but does not make a phone universally compatible.
- Confirm U.S. network bands and software support. Imported models may lack relevant LTE or 5G bands, approved firmware, or current updates.
- Install all system and carrier updates. Some AT&T-approved phones require updates before HD Voice or Wi-Fi Calling works.
- Activate the SIM or eSIM and register the emergency address. The carrier may not enable Wi-Fi Calling until this is complete.
- Test the service. Connect to a normal Wi-Fi network, move to an area with little or no cellular signal, and place and receive a call and SMS. Look for a Wi-Fi Calling indicator and verify that the call remains connected without cellular coverage.
How to enable Wi-Fi Calling on a Motorola phone
On many Motorola models, the general path is Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → Advanced → Wi-Fi Calling. The labels and location vary by Android version, carrier, and model. The control may also appear in Quick Settings, as described in Motorola’s instructions.
If the option is missing, do not assume immediately that the hardware is defective. The carrier may not support the feature for that model, the line may not be provisioned, the software may be outdated, or the phone may be a different regional or carrier variant.

What to do when Wi-Fi Calling is missing
- Restart the phone.
- Install available Android and carrier updates.
- Confirm that the SIM or eSIM is active and carrier-approved.
- Register or re-register the E911 or emergency address.
- Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and on, if the setting is available.
- Reset network settings, then reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- Test a standard home, office, or public Wi-Fi network instead of a mobile hotspot or satellite connection.
- Ask the carrier to verify IMS, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi Calling provisioning on the line.
- Run the IMEI check again and confirm the exact model variant.
- If the feature remains unavailable, use a carrier-approved Motorola variant or choose another approved phone.
Emergency calling and Wi-Fi Calling
Wi-Fi Calling is not a way to bypass emergency-location registration. Carriers require an emergency address or equivalent location information so emergency services can receive relevant details. T-Mobile requires an E911 address and warns that skipping registration can produce a REG09 error. Update the address whenever you move; Wi-Fi Calling emergency behavior can depend on the carrier, device, and connection.

MVNOs require a separate check
Cricket generally uses AT&T, Metro uses T-Mobile, and Visible uses Verizon, but the underlying network does not guarantee identical feature support. Google Fi, Consumer Cellular, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Mint, Spectrum, UScellular, and other brands may use their own device lists, SIM profiles, provisioning, or support policies.
Therefore, “this Motorola works on T-Mobile” does not automatically prove that it will receive Wi-Fi Calling on every T-Mobile-based MVNO. Check the MVNO’s own IMEI tool and its Wi-Fi Calling requirements, then compare that result with Motorola’s model-specific table.
Buying advice
If Wi-Fi Calling is important, the lowest-risk choices are a U.S.-market Motorola model with an explicit carrier entry or a carrier-sold version that the carrier supports. A carrier-sold phone may be easier to provision, but it can be locked and less convenient to move between networks. An unlocked U.S. model offers more flexibility, but its carrier-specific IMS features still need verification.

Frequently asked questions
Does an unlocked Motorola phone work on every U.S. carrier?
No. Unlocked status removes a carrier lock; it does not guarantee compatible bands, approved software, IMEI acceptance, VoLTE, or Wi-Fi Calling.
Does 5G guarantee VoLTE?
No. 5G capability and carrier voice certification are separate. Verify VoLTE for the exact model and carrier.
Can a Motorola phone support VoLTE but not Wi-Fi Calling?
Yes. Motorola’s carrier tables explicitly show examples where the two features have different carrier results.

Will Wi-Fi Calling work with no cellular signal?
It can, provided the phone and carrier have enabled the feature, emergency registration is complete, and the Wi-Fi connection meets the carrier’s requirements.
What if the carrier says the phone is compatible but the Wi-Fi Calling setting is absent?
Check updates, SIM or eSIM activation, emergency-address registration, the exact model variant, and carrier provisioning. A general BYOD approval does not always mean every calling feature has been enabled.
