The Motorola Moto G55 5G is still a sensible low-cost phone for everyday tasks, especially if you want long battery life, generous storage, a headphone jack and microSD expansion. But it launched in 2024, and its ordinary cameras, mid-range performance and short update promise make it a buy only when its price is clearly below newer alternatives. At a similar price, a newer phone may offer a better display, camera or longer software support.

Should you buy the Moto G55 in 2026?

Buy the Moto G55 if it is heavily discounted and your priorities are messaging, browsing, streaming, navigation and light gaming. Its 120Hz Full HD+ display, 5,000mAh battery, stereo speakers, 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable storage make it practical for basic daily use. Its value is weaker if it costs close to newer budget phones.

Motorola’s phone launched in August 2024. TechRadar reported a launch price of £199 or AU$299 and a £179 sale price during its review period; those are historical prices, not verified 2026 offers. TechRadar’s review is useful context, but compare the live local price with current alternatives before buying.

  • Consider it at a steep discount if battery life, storage, wired headphones and a familiar Android interface matter most.
  • Buy only for a specific feature if it is near its old launch price—for example, 256GB storage or the combination of microSD and a headphone jack.
  • Skip it at a price close to newer phones if you want OLED contrast, better photography, stronger gaming performance or more remaining software support.

No current August 2026 street price is established here, so there is no defensible universal price cutoff. Judge the actual listing against newer phones available in your country, rather than treating a 2024 launch price as today’s benchmark.

What specifications does the Moto G55 have?

The commonly reviewed configuration has a MediaTek Dimensity 7025 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but Motorola says configurations and availability vary by market. Check the exact model and regional listing: the Moto G55 is not the Moto G 5G (2024), Moto G54 5G or Moto G Power 5G.

Feature Specification
Display 6.49-inch LCD, 2400 × 1080 resolution, 120Hz, 405ppi
Processor MediaTek Dimensity 7025, up to 2.5GHz, in the consistently identified configuration
Memory and storage 8GB RAM and 256GB storage are commonly listed; configurations vary by market
Memory expansion microSD support up to 1TB, according to Motorola; card sold separately
Rear cameras 50MP main camera with OIS and PDAF; 8MP ultra-wide with a 118-degree field of view
Front camera 16MP
Video Rear recording up to 1080p at 60fps; front recording up to 1080p at 30fps
Battery and charging 5,000mAh; up to 30W wired TurboPower charging with a compatible charger
Audio and protection Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, 3.5mm headphone jack and IP54 dust and splash resistance
Port and wireless charging USB-C 2.0; no wireless charging in the consistently verified configuration

These specifications are from Motorola’s Moto G55 support listing and its regional product page. A separate Motorola support result describes a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 and wireless charging, which conflicts with the main specification page, product page and major reviews. Do not assume those features apply to every G55; verify the exact SKU with the seller before purchase.

Motorola lists microSD expansion up to 1TB, but a card is sold separately and DRM restrictions can prevent some content from being moved. Advertised RAM expansion, where offered, uses storage as virtual memory and is not equivalent to physical RAM. USB-C 2.0 also means buyers should not expect USB 3 transfer speeds or desktop-class display output.

How good is the Moto G55’s display?

The 6.49-inch Full HD+ LCD is one of the G55’s stronger features. Its 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and animations appear smoother than on a standard 60Hz screen, while the resolution is sharp enough for reading and video. It is still an LCD: it cannot match OLED’s deep blacks and high contrast.

  • Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.

TechRadar found the screen bright enough for streaming and gaming. Notebookcheck measured peak brightness of about 968 cd/m² and reported no PWM flicker on its tested unit; these are laboratory findings, not guarantees for every regional version. The phone offers Natural and Vivid colour modes. The higher refresh rate improves how motion looks, but does not make the processor more powerful.

Is performance good enough for daily use and games?

The Dimensity 7025 is smooth enough for ordinary workloads—web browsing, messaging, social apps, navigation, music and video streaming—but the G55 is not a performance-first phone. Reviewers differ in how often they noticed slowdowns: TechRadar found normal navigation generally responsive, with some lag in demanding tasks; Tech Advisor reported occasional stuttering and poor performance. Notebookcheck’s results place it as competent for its class, rather than a fast handset.

In practice, demanding apps, heavy multitasking, camera processing and larger games are more likely to expose delays. Casual gaming is reasonable, but do not buy it expecting consistently high graphics settings or smooth extended sessions. Motorola’s GameTime feature has battery-saving, balanced and Turbo modes; these change the phone’s operating behaviour, not its underlying hardware capability. Buyers seeking sustained gaming performance should choose a newer phone with a stronger chipset.

Are the Moto G55 cameras any good?

The rear system has a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an 8MP ultra-wide camera; the front camera is 16MP. The main camera’s OIS can help steady handheld shots, but stabilisation does not guarantee strong image processing. Normal photos from the main camera are adequate in good light, rather than a reason on their own to choose the phone. Its standard 50MP sensor output is typically combined into 12.5MP images.

  • Tons of built-in ultrafast storage. Enjoy plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps—and add up to 1TB with a microSD card.

Independent reviews describe the cameras as ordinary or lacklustre. TechRadar criticised selfie detail, lighting and skin-tone rendering, and Tech Advisor also found the camera system disappointing. Expect quality to be less dependable indoors or at night, with moving subjects, and when switching to the ultra-wide. The 1080p video ceiling is another limitation if you want higher-resolution footage.

  • Choose another phone for: reliable night photography, strong selfies, high-quality video, quick capture of moving subjects or consistent results across multiple lenses.
  • Expect a basic camera for: casual daylight photos and occasional snapshots, rather than consistently polished images.

How long does the battery last, and how fast does it charge?

The 5,000mAh battery is a major strength. TechRadar reported getting through a full day of mixed streaming, music, gaming and general use with charge remaining. In Notebookcheck’s testing, the G55 lasted 15 hours 44 minutes in its practical WLAN test, and a full charge took about 1 hour 45 minutes. Those figures come from that publication’s test conditions; your results will depend on signal strength, screen settings and workload.

Charging is rated at up to 30W, but Motorola says reaching that capability requires a compatible TurboPower charger. Charger inclusion varies by market and retail package, and a generic USB-C adapter is not guaranteed to deliver the maximum rate. There is no wireless charging in the consistently verified configuration. For a buyer who mainly wants dependable daily endurance, the battery is more compelling than the charging speed.

What is the software support like?

The G55 launched with Android 14 and Motorola’s relatively clean Android interface. TechRadar reported Motorola’s promise of two Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the reviewed model. That is a limited runway for a phone bought in 2026, so check how much support remains for the specific regional model before relying on it as a long-term primary phone.

Do not assume a particular Android version or security-patch date from the model name alone. Motorola says update timing can vary by product, carrier, maintenance cycle and region; consult its security-update information and the device’s software update screen. The interface includes Motorola gestures and customization tools, Smart Connect and GameTime, but reviewers also noted preinstalled games or other unwanted software.

Is the Moto G55 comfortable and durable?

The phone has practical extras that are increasingly uncommon at this price: stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a side-mounted fingerprint reader and microSD support. It is rated IP54, meaning dust and splash resistance—not waterproofing or protection against submersion. Motorola lists approximate weights of 179g for the PMMA finish and 182g for vegan leather. The leather-style finish can offer more grip; the PMMA version may show fingerprints.

The raised camera housing can make the phone rock when it lies on a table. Tech Advisor criticised the vibration motor as strong and rattly. TechRadar reported an included clear case with its tested package, but accessories differ by country and retailer, so confirm what comes in the box rather than assuming every sale includes one.

What should you check before buying an imported or discounted G55?

Regional variants and retail bundles can differ, and a low price does not make an imported handset equivalent to an officially sold local model. Verify these points against the exact model number and seller listing:

Motorola’s specification listing warns that availability and some memory details vary by market. A US support page alone does not establish broad US retail availability or carrier compatibility. Imported stock may also have different bands, firmware, charger plugs or warranty coverage.

Who is the Moto G55 best for?

The G55 makes most sense for a cost-conscious buyer who wants a straightforward phone for ordinary use and values battery capacity and practical hardware extras more than camera quality or top-end speed.

  • Good fit: messaging, streaming, navigation, light games, long battery life, expandable storage and wired headphones.
  • Less suitable: OLED picture quality, heavy gaming, demanding multitasking, polished photography, wireless charging or a long update lifespan.
  • Backup or child’s phone: its basic-use strengths can suit these roles, but check carrier compatibility, parental-control needs and the remaining security support first.

When the price gap is small, consider whether a newer Motorola or a Samsung Galaxy A-series model offers a more useful display, chipset, camera or support policy. A refurbished mid-range phone can also offer better cameras or an OLED screen, but weigh its battery health, condition, warranty and remaining updates. The available comparisons do not establish current prices or a single best alternative, so compare local models and offers rather than choosing by brand alone.
