Claude Code’s official documentation presents a practical shortlist of MCP servers commonly used with Claude Code, but it does not publish adoption counts or a ranking method. So “most popular” is best read as “officially documented examples,” not a measured top-to-bottom leaderboard. The right server depends on what you want Claude Code to access, what permissions that requires, and whether the connection runs remotely or locally.

What MCP servers do in Claude Code

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems, including tools, data sources and workflows. With an MCP server configured, Claude Code can interact with a connected service instead of requiring you to paste every issue, database result or design reference into chat. Documented workflows include working with issues and pull requests, inspecting monitoring data, querying databases, using design files and automating follow-up tasks. The Model Context Protocol documentation explains the protocol; Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP reference covers Claude Code’s setup and configuration.

An MCP server is not necessarily a server you install on a public web host. It is the service or process that exposes MCP tools to Claude Code. Depending on the integration, it may run locally on your computer or connect to a remote service over the network.

Commonly used MCP servers in Claude Code’s official examples

The categories below organize examples in Anthropic’s catalog by the work they support. They are not ranked by user counts, repository stars or any other popularity metric; no such figures or methodology are published in the reference.

Work area Documented examples Typical use
Development and testing Sentry, Socket, Hugging Face, Jam Inspect production errors, analyze dependency security, access Hugging Face Hub information or Gradio applications, and review debugging recordings or diagnostics.
Project management and documentation Asana, Linear, Atlassian, Notion, ClickUp, Monday, Intercom, Fireflies Work with project tasks and issues, Jira and Confluence content, pages, customer conversations or meeting transcripts.
Databases and data Airtable, Daloopa, HubSpot, and other database or CRM options Retrieve or work with information held in a data, spreadsheet-like or customer-management system.
Payments and commerce PayPal, Plaid, Square, Stripe Connect work to payment or commerce systems, subject to the particular integration’s tools and permissions.
Design and media Figma, Cloudinary, Canva, and other media or design integrations Use design files or media-related services as context for development work.
Infrastructure and deployment Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel Work with infrastructure and deployment information. Anthropic describes Vercel’s official server as supporting documentation search, projects and deployments, and deployment-log analysis.
Automation Workato, Zapier Connect Claude Code to automation workflows and follow-up actions.

These are examples, not a guarantee that each integration is available in every location, account tier or organizational setup. A vendor can change its endpoint, supported tools or authentication process, so check the service’s own current installation documentation before connecting it.

How to choose the right server

Start with the task, not the name of a popular service. If you need help investigating incidents, an observability integration such as Sentry is more relevant than a design integration. If the work is turning a design into code, a Figma connection is a closer fit. A server is useful only when it exposes the data or actions you need and your account can authorize access to them.

  • Match tools to the job. Decide whether you need issue management, monitoring, design handoff, database access, deployment context or workflow automation.
  • Check the data and actions it can reach. Read the integration’s current tool list and permission scope. Distinguish read access from permission to create, edit, deploy or trigger actions.
  • Understand where it runs. A remote endpoint connects to a service over a documented transport. A local stdio server launches a process on your machine and may need access to local files, tools or credentials.
  • Choose the right sharing scope. A personal setup may be appropriate for an individual. For a team, project scope or a checked-in .mcp.json can make configuration shareable; decide deliberately what endpoint and configuration the repository should distribute.
  • Verify the operator and instructions. Prefer the service’s own documentation or a server whose source and maintainer you can evaluate. Do not treat inclusion in a catalog as a security audit.

Add an MCP server to Claude Code

Claude Code documents HTTP for remote servers and describes it as the most widely supported transport for cloud services. Local stdio is for servers launched as processes, including ones that need direct system access. Remote WebSocket is intended for services that push events. Server-Sent Events (SSE) is deprecated in the reference; use HTTP when the service supports it. The command differs by transport and by the server’s own setup requirements.

Connect a remote HTTP server

For example, Anthropic documents adding Notion with this command:

claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp

Run it in a terminal where Claude Code is available. The command registers the remote endpoint; complete any authentication steps required by Notion or Claude Code before expecting the tools to work. Do not assume that this example’s endpoint or authentication flow applies to other services.

Connect a local stdio server

A stdio integration starts a local command and communicates with it through standard input and output. The reference shows this general form:

claude mcp add <name> -- <command> [args...]

The executable and arguments depend on the server vendor’s current instructions. Use the exact command from that vendor, and check whether it requires a runtime, environment variables or credentials. Because the process runs locally, review what files and environment information it can access.

Pick a configuration scope

Claude Code provides local, user and project configuration scopes. Use a personal scope when the connection is just for you; use project scope when it belongs to a particular codebase. A team that wants a shared project configuration can consider a checked-in .mcp.json. Before committing one, verify that it contains no personal secrets and that teammates are expected to trust and use the configured server.

After adding a server, follow the service’s authentication instructions, then confirm in Claude Code that it is connected and that its tools are available. If the service has changed its setup since its published example, follow the current vendor instructions rather than relying on an old command copied elsewhere.

Is there a GitHub MCP server for Claude Code?

The catalog examples summarized here do not establish a specific GitHub server or its current endpoint. Check GitHub’s own current documentation or the server maintainer’s documentation for a supported integration, installation command and permissions. Confirm whether it needs repository read access, write access or broader account permissions before authorizing it.

Are MCP servers safe to use?

Safety depends on the server operator, implementation, permissions and the content it processes. Anthropic’s guidance is direct: “Verify you trust each server before connecting it.” The documentation also warns that servers fetching external content can expose users to prompt injection. An attacker may place instructions in a page, issue or other retrieved content that attempt to influence the model; retrieved text should not automatically be treated as trusted instructions.

  • Verify who operates the server and read its current documentation; inspect source code where it is available and appropriate.
  • Review the exact permissions and credentials you are granting. Use the narrowest access that supports the task, and avoid supplying powerful credentials when read-only access is sufficient.
  • Consider what external content the server fetches and whether the tools can take consequential actions.
  • For team configuration, review changes to shared MCP settings as carefully as other code and configuration.
  • Disconnect a server and revoke its credentials if you no longer need it or cannot verify its operator or access requirements.

Anthropic’s catalog is illustrative; its inclusion does not mean Anthropic has verified the correctness or security of every third-party server.

Screenshot workflows: an alternative to try first

If your Claude Code task needs a webpage screenshot rather than a general project, issue or data integration, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server made by Yorker Media. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. It is a relevant alternative when an agent needs webpage captures; it is not a replacement for a GitHub, database or project-management integration.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-request screenshot, use cURL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API’s parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common setup problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Claude Code cannot connect to a remote server The URL, transport or service availability may not match the integration’s current setup. Copy the endpoint and transport from the vendor’s current documentation. Confirm that the service supports HTTP if you use --transport http.
Authentication fails or tools are unavailable The required sign-in or credentials may be missing, expired or insufficiently scoped. Complete the vendor’s documented authentication flow, check the granted permissions and reconnect as instructed by the service.
A local stdio server does not start The command, runtime, arguments or environment variables may be missing or incorrect. Compare the registered command with the vendor’s exact current stdio setup. Verify required dependencies and environment configuration, without exposing secrets in shared files.
A teammate cannot use a project server The endpoint may require individual authentication or the shared project configuration may be incomplete. Check whether the integration supports team use, whether each user must authenticate, and whether the project configuration is present and appropriate.
Claude returns unexpected instructions from connected content Retrieved external text may contain prompt-injection attempts. Treat remote content as untrusted input. Reassess the server’s operator and permissions, and avoid approving consequential actions solely because retrieved content requested them.

Frequently asked questions

Does “most popular” mean these are the highest-use MCP servers?

No. Anthropic’s examples are described as commonly used, but the documentation publishes no server-by-server usage counts or ranking method.

Should I use HTTP, stdio or WebSocket?

Use the transport the server supports: HTTP is the documented choice for remote services where available, stdio launches a local process, and WebSocket serves remote integrations that push events. SSE is deprecated in Claude Code’s reference.
