Most of xAI’s original non-Musk cofounders had left by spring 2026, according to media reporting. Their departures overlapped with a serious Grok safety controversy involving sexualized images and images appearing to depict minors. But the public record does not show that the controversy caused the founders to leave: several departures predated it, and no cited founder said they resigned over it.
What “the founders fled” actually means
xAI was founded in 2023 by Elon Musk and a 12-person team, according to contemporaneous reporting. TechCrunch reported on February 10, 2026, that six members of that original group had left, including cofounders Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba. In April, Fast Company reported that every cofounder other than Musk had exited. That later status is a media-reported count, not a roster xAI itself published: TechCrunch’s February count; Fast Company’s later account.
“Left,” “was pushed out,” and “fled” are not interchangeable. Some people publicly announced departures; other exits were reported by journalists or described as part of restructuring. The available accounts also include employees who were not founders, as well as layoffs and firings. Counts covering different groups and periods should not be combined into one supposed founder tally.

A timeline that complicates the cause
- 2024: Infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic reportedly left for OpenAI. This was well before the 2025–26 imagery controversy.
- February 2025: Christian Szegedy reportedly departed, also before the controversy reached its later scale.
- August 13, 2025: Cofounder Igor Babuschkin announced that it was his last day at xAI. His announcement was public; it did not establish a connection to the later CSAM controversy. TechCrunch reported on his departure.
- January–February 2026: The company saw a wider wave of departures. Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba announced they were leaving; TechCrunch counted six of the original 12-person team gone by February 10.
- February 2026: Musk described a reorganization and suggested that some employees were better suited to an earlier-stage company. That is his account of the changes, not proof that every exit was voluntary or for the same reason. TechCrunch’s report on Musk’s explanation.
- March 2026: TechCrunch reported that cofounders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang had left, with dissatisfaction over the coding effort cited in its account. That report does not establish that the imagery controversy was their reason.
- By spring 2026: Fast Company reported that all non-Musk cofounders had exited. The reporting describes a wider mix of founder and employee turnover, not a single confirmed wave of resignations over Grok safety.
The timeline matters: a person who left in 2024 cannot plausibly have left in response to the later controversy. For subsequent exits, timing makes a connection possible, but timing alone does not prove one.

What the Grok controversy involved
Grok faced criticism for producing or enabling sexually explicit manipulated images of real people without their consent. Later reports and official actions also raised concerns about images appearing to depict minors. The issue involved Grok as a service and its integration with X, where content could circulate. Generation, hosting, reposting, and failure to remove material are distinct actions, even when they contribute to the same harm.
Not every explicit synthetic image is legally CSAM. Classification depends on the image, the apparent age of the person depicted, how it was made or distributed, and the jurisdiction. It is more precise to describe the broader dispute as the “CSAM controversy” while referring to specific material as alleged AI-generated CSAM or images appearing to depict minors unless an authority has made a definitive legal classification. For adult victims, “non-consensual intimate imagery” is the more accurate term.
What regulators said—and what they did not
On January 16, 2026, California’s attorney general sent xAI and X a letter demanding action concerning explicit material produced using Grok and concerns involving sexualized images of minors. The letter is an official regulatory intervention, not a final judgment that the companies violated the law. Read the California letter.

Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner initiated complaints on January 15 and later reported that CSAM and non-consensual intimate imagery had been present on the services. It also said it could not determine a precise volume. Its findings describe privacy and assessment-handling concerns; they should not be inflated into a claim that a court found xAI knowingly committed a crime. The regulator’s report is PIPEDA Findings 2026-004.
There were claims that safeguards had been introduced, but the central questions are when they were active, what they covered, and how effective they were across Grok on X, the standalone service, apps, paid accounts, and APIs. Blocking a prompt, limiting generation, restricting distribution, and removing already-posted material are different controls. The public record summarized here does not establish that safeguards worked equally across every surface or at every point in time.
Did the controversy cause the departures?
The strongest defensible answer is not proven. There is meaningful context for asking the question: the departures accelerated during a period of scrutiny over Grok’s product behavior, safety controls, and rapid expansion. Those pressures could plausibly create friction between researchers, safety staff, and leadership. But plausibility is not evidence that any particular founder left over the CSAM issue.

Consider the evidence in three tiers:
- Documented: Some founders announced departures publicly. Those announcements establish that they left, but do not attribute their decisions to the imagery controversy.
- Reported: Coverage has cited varied explanations, including new ventures, health reasons, organizational fit, restructuring, and changes in product priorities. Musk characterized some exits as a reorganization and a question of fit. These explanations should be attributed rather than treated as a single verified account.
- Inferred: The overlap between safety scrutiny and later departures makes a relationship possible. It does not show that the controversy caused the exits, that every founder objected to the same decisions, or that Musk forced them all out.
A later lawsuit reportedly alleges that xAI fired an engineer who raised alarms about Grok safety. That is relevant context for questions about internal dissent, but it remains an allegation, not an adjudicated finding. TechCrunch’s report on the lawsuit should be read with that distinction in mind.
What losing founders could mean for xAI
Founders often carry institutional knowledge that is hard to replace: why a research program was set up a certain way, what trade-offs were made in training, and which risks were considered before a product shipped. Losing senior people can unsettle pretraining, reasoning, coding, multimodal work, and safety programs; it can also make it harder to keep a coherent long-term research strategy. If decision-making becomes more concentrated around Musk and a smaller leadership group, internal challenge and escalation become especially important.
There are countervailing possibilities. A growing company may need different managers than a startup, and leadership changes can clarify priorities or replace structures that no longer work. Turnover does not by itself establish that a company’s safety controls have weakened. The relevant questions are who now owns safety decisions, whether teams can stop or delay a risky release, and whether concerns reach decision-makers with the authority to act.

xAI’s own January 6, 2026 announcement said it had raised $20 billion in a Series E round and described ambitious compute and model plans. That is company-reported financing, not evidence that operations are healthy; it does show why departures alone do not prove the company is collapsing. Capital and infrastructure can support continued development, while leadership instability can still impair execution and oversight. xAI’s Series E announcement.
Reporting also described a SpaceX transaction or merger and subsequent restructuring in 2026. Those developments may affect governance, incentives, and reporting lines, but the accounts use changing labels and do not provide a basis here to assert a definitive current legal identity or that every departure resulted from the transaction. “xAI,” “Grok,” and X refer to a company, a product, and a platform—not interchangeable entities.
What remains unanswered
The public record does not identify which founders, if any, objected to specific Grok safeguards or product decisions; whether safety concerns affected any individual departure; or how the company’s safety leadership and escalation authority changed after the founding team thinned. It also does not settle which safeguards were active at each stage of the controversy. Those details—not the dramatic word “fleeing”—would determine whether the exits amounted to a loss of internal checks on risk.
