Released March 3, 2023, Mixxx 2.3.4 added bundled controller mappings for the first-generation Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 and the original Numark Party Mix. That means Mixxx could interpret the controllers’ hardware messages; it does not mean a firmware update, manufacturer certification, or exact reproduction of every vendor-software feature. Mixxx 2.3.4 is now an older release: the official download page lists Mixxx 2.5.6 as the stable release, so it is the sensible choice for a new installation.
What changed in Mixxx 2.3.4?
The March 3, 2023 release added built-in mappings for the Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk1 and original Numark Party Mix. Mixxx also ships controller-mapping changes in bug-fix releases, so these additions did not require a new major version. The release announcement and Mixxx 2.3 changelog also list macOS 13 Ventura support for Intel Macs, macOS performance and translation fixes, metadata-import fixes involving MusicBrainz, Rekordbox databases and Serato metadata, skin fixes for Tango and LateNight, and other bug fixes. Some Numark mapping changes addressed inverted pitch or rate sliders.
What does “support” mean here?
Mixxx support is provided through a controller mapping: software instructions that translate the device’s MIDI or HID messages into Mixxx actions. It is not a driver or firmware update, nor a promise that every button, light, audio input, effect or workflow matches the manufacturer’s software. In general, the operating system must recognize the device and Mixxx must have a suitable mapping. Mixxx distinguishes bundled mappings from community mappings, which may not receive the same level of verification (Mixxx controller documentation).
Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk1: what works and what to expect
Confirm it is the first-generation S2
The mapping is for the Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk1, not automatically the Mk2 or Mk3. The Mk1 can be distinguished from the Mk2 by its black plastic pressure-sensitive jog-wheel tops; the Mk2 has shiny aluminum tops. The Mixxx S2 Mk1 manual documents it as a two-deck controller with an integrated audio interface.

Controls and audio routing
The mapping covers transport controls such as play, pause, cue and sync; tempo and hotcues; intro/outro cues and sampler modes; library browsing and track loading; deck assignment to effect units; EQ, channel faders, crossfader and level meters. Pressing a jog wheel’s top enables scratching, while its edge nudges the track; Shift plus jog wheel provides fast seeking. Shift plus channel-cue controls toggles quantize. The mapping uses Mixxx’s standard effects controls.
The loop encoders do not simply duplicate a Traktor workflow. The left encoder controls beat-jumping and loop movement, and pressing it while turning changes beat-jump size. The right encoder changes loop size, and pressing it toggles the loop. The controller’s main output and headphone levels are handled in hardware rather than mapped as ordinary Mixxx software gains, avoiding duplicate amplification.

For audio configuration, the manual documents master output on channels 1–2 and headphones on channels 3–4. Assign those separately in Mixxx if you want headphone cueing. The S2 Mk1 has balanced 1/4-inch TRS and unbalanced RCA master outputs, as well as a headphone output. Its microphone input is routed internally and is not accessible to Mixxx, according to the manual.
Operating-system considerations
- Linux and macOS: Mixxx documents the S2 Mk1 as USB audio and HID class-compliant, with no proprietary driver required.
- Windows: Mixxx directs users to install the latest Native Instruments driver. Check the current Native Instruments support resources for applicable driver availability.
Class compliance does not guarantee identical behavior on every operating-system version. Older hardware can still encounter USB, driver-signing, power or audio-routing problems.

Original Numark Party Mix: mapping features
Deck, mixer and pad controls
The mapping documented for the original Party Mix supports library browsing with the encoder, loading tracks to either deck, master gain, cue mix and headphone gain, two-channel EQ and volume faders, and the crossfader. It also maps cue, sync, play/pause, hotcues and pitch faders. The pads have modes for hotcues, auto-loops, sampler triggering and effects.
Jog-wheel behavior depends on scratch mode: scratching works when it is enabled, while the wheel bends pitch when it is disabled. Scratch mode is off by default in the documented mapping. The manual lists auto-loop defaults of 4, 8, 16 and 32 beats; these are mapping settings, not hardware specifications.

Adjusting jog and loop behavior
Behavior can be tuned in Numark-Party-Mix.scripts.js. The documented defaults are jogScratchSensitivity: 340, jogPitchSensitivity: 10, jogSearchSensitivity: 1/2, and auto-loop sizes of 4, 8, 16 and 32 beats. These values describe the mapping’s defaults, not universal specifications for every unit. See the Mixxx Party Mix manual for the mapping details.

Install and test the mapping
For ordinary use, install the current stable version listed on the official Mixxx download page, rather than 2.3.4. That page lists Windows, macOS and Linux downloads and says Mixxx is free, with no official paid or “Pro” edition. It also advises Ubuntu users to use the project PPA because the Ubuntu Software Centre package is often behind. Mixxx notes that switching from a distribution package or source build to Flatpak may not automatically restore previous settings and the library database.
- Download and install Mixxx for your operating system. Use the Mixxx 2.5.6 release announcement if you need release-specific context.
- Connect the controller directly by USB before launching Mixxx. Use a data-capable cable and avoid an unpowered USB hub.
- Open Mixxx’s controller configuration or preferences area, select the detected exact model, and enable its supplied Mixxx mapping rather than a generic MIDI mapping. Labels can differ between software versions; use the S2 Mk1 or Party Mix versioned manual for controller-specific guidance.
- Configure audio outputs. On the S2 Mk1, assign master to channels 1–2 and headphones to channels 3–4. Check the output assignments for the Party Mix according to its detected audio device and the versioned manual.
- Load a test track on each deck and verify play/pause, cue, jog behavior, pitch faders, headphone cueing, crossfader, master output, hotcues and loops before a live set.
If the controller does not appear, check that the operating system recognizes it, restart Mixxx after connecting it, and close other applications—especially Traktor or vendor utilities—that may be using it. On Windows with an S2 Mk1, check the Native Instruments driver. Confirm the exact model and mapping, then consult Mixxx’s MIDI/HID diagnostics or controller logs. If a pitch slider moves in the wrong direction, verify its behavior in the installed version; Mixxx’s 2.3.4 announcement noted fixes to inverted pitch/rate sliders in some Numark mappings.
Should you install Mixxx 2.3.4 now?
Not for a normal new installation. The official download page lists Mixxx 2.5.6 as the current stable release, built March 25, 2026 and announced March 27, 2026. Later releases continued refining controller support; the current Mixxx changelog includes later S2 Mk1 and Party Mix mapping work. Use 2.3.4 only when you specifically need to reproduce or test that historical software environment.
If you depend on exact Traktor behavior or features Mixxx cannot access—such as the S2 Mk1’s internal microphone routing—staying with compatible vendor software may make sense, subject to current operating-system and driver support. If open-source software and Linux support matter more, Mixxx is a practical option for the exact mapped models. Used legacy hardware still warrants inspection for worn faders, jog wheels, USB sockets and missing accessories; do not assume a mapping for one generation applies to another.
