If Apple Mail now shows Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions tabs, open an inbox, tap the three-dot More button, and choose List View. That restores a single, chronological-style message list on iPhone and iPad.
This is a view change, not a rollback to an older Mail app. You may need a few additional settings to remove contact photos, sender digests, or a badge that counts only Primary mail.
What changed in Apple Mail?
Apple Mail’s newer inbox design automatically sorts messages into four categories:
- Primary: personal and time-sensitive messages
- Transactions: receipts, confirmations and shipping notices
- Updates: newsletters, news and social updates
- Promotions: coupons, sales and marketing messages
Some time-sensitive messages from the other categories can also appear in Primary. Availability varies by software version, country, region and language. Apple’s current iPhone documentation and iPad documentation describe the feature in current releases.

The “old look” complaint can also refer to contact photos, business icons, grouped messages, Priority Messages, summaries or unread badges. These are separate controls, so switching to List View may not remove all of them.
Restore a single inbox on iPhone
- Open Mail.
- Open an inbox, such as All Inboxes or an account’s Inbox.
- Tap the three-dot More button near the top.
- Tap List View.
The category tabs should disappear and Mail should show one list of messages. Your accounts, folders and messages remain intact; this changes how the inbox is displayed.
To inspect all messages temporarily without changing the layout, swipe left across the category row to reveal All Mail, where available. If you do not see List View, make sure you are inside an inbox rather than on the mailbox list. The control may also be absent when Categories are unavailable or already disabled.

List View does not necessarily remove the circular contact photos or business logos. On current iPhone and iPad software, try:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Turn off Show Contact Photos.
Labels and locations can differ on older releases. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for Contact Photos.
This makes the list less visual, but you lose the quick recognition that photos provide. The workaround is documented in an Apple Community discussion; use the label shown on your own software version as the authority.

Stop messages being grouped by sender
If Mail is showing digest-style groups instead of individual messages:

- Open an inbox.
- Tap More.
- Turn off Group by Sender.
On iPad, the same control is in the More menu associated with the sidebar or inbox controls. Turning it off makes individual messages easier to scan, but removes the grouped-sender organization.
Make the badge count every unread message
Categories can make the Home Screen badge count only unread messages in Primary. To count unread mail from every category:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Mail > Notifications.
- Tap Customize Notifications.
- Select the relevant account.
- Under Badge Count, choose All Unread Messages.
This setting is separate from List View. If the badge still seems too low after changing the inbox view, check this option using Apple’s notification instructions.
Restore the old-style view on iPad
- Open Mail and enter an inbox.
- Tap the three-dot More button near the inbox and category controls.
- Tap List View.
The button can move depending on whether the sidebar is open, the iPad is in portrait or landscape orientation, or the window layout has changed. Look for the three-dot More control rather than relying on one fixed screen position.
You can also tap the currently selected category to switch to an all-mail view, as described in Apple’s iPad Mail guide. The iPad uses the same separate controls for contact photos, sender grouping and unread badges.

Turn off Mail Categories on Mac
On a Mac, the permanent-looking list view is controlled from Mail’s menu bar:
- Open Mail.
- Choose View in the macOS menu bar.
- Turn off Show Mail Categories.
You can also click the View Options button in the Mail toolbar and deselect Show Mail Categories. Apple documents Mail Categories on macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later, and current documentation also covers macOS Tahoe.
To see everything temporarily while keeping Categories enabled, click the currently selected category, such as Primary. An All Mail option appears.

Categories change the display and classification; they do not indicate that Mail has deleted the message.
Fix messages that are in the wrong category
You do not have to abandon Categories if only a few senders are misclassified.
On iPhone, open a message, open its More or More Actions control, choose Categorize Sender, and select the desired category. The change applies to current and future messages from that sender.

On Mac, Control-click a message, choose Categorize Sender, and select a category. This is more precise than disabling Categories, although it may require occasional maintenance when a sender changes its mailing practices.

Some people use “the new Mail look” to mean Priority Messages, message summaries or other Apple Intelligence features rather than the four inbox categories. List View does not automatically disable every one of those features.
Look for Priority Messages or summary controls in the relevant Mail view and disable them separately if they are available on your device. Exact labels and availability can vary by operating-system release, language, device and Apple Intelligence support. Apple describes Mail and Apple Intelligence features in its current product materials.

iCloud.com Mail has separate web controls. Hiding the tabs is not the same as stopping future categorization.
Hide the category tabs
- Open iCloud Mail.
- Click the Settings button above the mailbox list.
- Choose Hide Categories.
This hides the category interface but preserves the categorization information.

Stop future categorization
- Open iCloud Mail settings.
- Choose Categories.
- Select Turn Off Categorization.
That changes how future messages are sorted on iCloud.com. It is a web setting, so do not assume that changing it automatically changes the Mail app on every Apple device. See Apple’s iCloud Mail guide for the current controls.

Why you may not see List View
- You are not inside an inbox: open an account Inbox or All Inboxes first.
- The More button is hard to find: on iPad, check the area near the category controls and sidebar.
- Categories are unavailable: Apple says the feature is not offered in every country, region or language.
- Your software is different: menu labels and locations may vary between releases.
- Categories are already off: there may be no List View command because Mail is already displaying one list.
If messages appear to have disappeared, choose All Mail where available, search for the message, check Junk and review whether sender grouping or category assignment is affecting what you see.
Can you completely restore the old Apple Mail app?
No. Apple provides supported controls to change the view, category display, sender grouping, category assignment and badge behavior, but it does not provide a separate rollback that installs an older version of Mail while leaving the rest of iOS or macOS unchanged.
You can make Mail look and behave much more like it used to, but you cannot guarantee the exact former design or remove every newer feature. The practical combination for most people is List View, Show Contact Photos off, Group by Sender off and All Unread Messages for the badge.
When a different mail app makes sense
A replacement app is only necessary if you want a different workflow rather than a simpler Apple Mail view. Gmail, Outlook, Spark Mail, Edison Mail, Canary Mail and Proton Mail all make different trade-offs around account support, privacy, notifications, organization and subscriptions.
Compare those factors before switching. If your only complaint is the category layout, Apple Mail’s built-in settings are the faster and free fix; Apple lists Mail as free on the U.S. App Store.
