Mirelo announced a $41 million seed round on December 15, 2025, to develop AI tools that generate synchronized sound for video and games. The round was co-led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Atlantic.vc and TriplePoint Capital. The German startup is not primarily another text-to-video company: its bet is that AI-generated video will need a separate, editable audio layer even as major video models increasingly add sound by default.
What Mirelo raised—and what it did not
The new financing is a $41 million seed round. Mirelo says Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz led it, joined by Atlantic.vc and TriplePoint Capital. Mirelo’s announcement was published on December 15, 2025.
TechCrunch reported that Mirelo had raised $44 million in total, including an earlier pre-seed round led by Atlantic. Those figures are not contradictory: $41 million describes the new seed round, while $44 million describes reported cumulative funding. Mirelo’s valuation and the size of its previous round were not disclosed.

The problem: video is getting faster, but sound design is still laborious
AI video generation can produce a visual sequence in minutes, but the result may be silent, poorly synchronized, or accompanied by generic audio that does not fit the creator’s intent. A conventional sound workflow involves identifying every meaningful action, searching sound libraries, choosing recordings, placing them on a timeline, editing them, and repeatedly adjusting timing and levels.
A video may imply footsteps, impacts, machinery, fabric movement, weather, room tone, crowd noise, or a changing environment. Mirelo’s initial product attempts to infer those events from the picture and produce a synchronized sound-effects layer.
The phrase “sound is half the experience,” used in investor and company messaging, is best understood as a filmmaking argument rather than a measured scientific percentage. The practical point is less controversial: sound changes how viewers interpret movement, scale, tension, and emotion.
How Mirelo’s product works
At the time of the funding announcement, Mirelo had released SFX 1.5, made models available through fal.ai and Replicate, and was developing Mirelo Studio. Its current product page presents Mirelo SFX 1.6, which broadens the workflow beyond one-click video sound.
Video-to-SFX
Users provide video and ask the system to generate effects that correspond to visible actions and scenes. The intended output includes elements such as footsteps, impacts, object movement, and ambience—not dialogue replacement, a complete music score, or a finished mix.
Text-to-SFX
Text prompts can describe sounds that are off-screen, imaginary, stylized, or not reliably inferable from the image. This matters when a creator wants a deliberately chosen interpretation rather than the most literal sound suggested by the footage.

Iteration rather than a single generation
SFX 1.6 emphasizes longer generations, audio extension, seamless loops, and inpainting. These features address a more important professional question than whether the first result sounds plausible: can a user replace one bad effect, repair a short section, extend ambience, or create alternatives without regenerating the entire timeline?

Mirelo advertises access through Mirelo Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve plugins, an API, and partner platforms. Capabilities, model versions, pricing, and limits may differ between those surfaces.
Why a specialist could matter when video models already generate audio
The “silent AI video” description is becoming less precise. Video-generation systems are increasingly adding native audio capabilities, including the video-to-audio work associated with Google and DeepMind’s Veo products. At the same time, companies such as Sony, Tencent, Kuaishou’s Kling, and ElevenLabs have worked on related audio or video-to-sound systems.
That creates a difficult competitive question for Mirelo. If a video model can generate a synchronized soundtrack in the same request, why use a separate service?
Mirelo’s answer is that default audio is not necessarily production-ready audio. A specialist layer could offer:

The defensible distinction is specialization and workflow control—not proof that Mirelo is objectively better than every competing model.

What evidence existed at the funding stage?
Mirelo reported that SFX 1.5 achieved a 68.3% win rate excluding ties and 73.2% including ties in 555 pairwise comparisons with 15 external listeners. The company compared its output with Kling Text-to-Audio and Tencent Hunyuan VideoFoley.
Those are company-reported results, not an independent industry benchmark. The outcome depends on the selected clips, prompts, listener pool, comparison design, and treatment of ties. It is evidence of Mirelo’s claimed positioning, but not conclusive proof of broad superiority.
The launch material also claimed faster-than-real-time generation and reduced unwanted speech or music leakage. Those claims should be evaluated separately from the reported preference test.

Who is Mirelo for?
- Individual creators: a way to make short videos feel more complete without manually searching for every effect.
- Editors: rapid sound drafts, variations, and timeline-based iteration.
- Studios and agencies: a way to accelerate repetitive spotting and temporary sound design.
- Developers: API access for media applications, platforms, and automated pipelines.
- Game creators: prompt-based asset generation, including a Roblox Studio plugin, though pre-rendered effects are not a substitute for adaptive game-audio systems.
It is less suitable as a complete replacement for dialogue recording, dubbing, music composition, Foley performance, mixing, mastering, or accessibility narration.
Pricing and practical usage
Mirelo’s current public pricing lists these Studio plans:

Mirelo’s pricing page states that SFX 1.6 uses 10 credits per second. A 60-second generation therefore consumes 600 credits. On the 24,000-credit Creator plan, that is theoretically 40 minutes of single-pass SFX generation before variants, retries, other models, or unused credits are considered. Four alternative takes multiply the generation usage by four.

The free plan is for testing rather than ordinary commercial production: Mirelo’s terms state that free-plan output is for non-commercial use, while the pricing page identifies a watermark. Paid plans permit commercial and business use according to the selected plan and applicable terms. Prices are displayed in euros and may include statutory VAT.
Developers can also encounter different economics and capabilities through Replicate, fal.ai, or Runware. For example, the Replicate listing for SFX 1.5 showed $0.01 per second of output audio per sample, but that listing concerns an older model and should not be treated as the price or feature set of current SFX 1.6.

TechCrunch reported that Mirelo said its models were trained with public and purchased sound libraries and that it was pursuing revenue-sharing partnerships intended to respect artists’ rights. That is a meaningful position, but it does not establish the full provenance of every training sound.
Public information does not provide a complete dataset list, licensing audit, revenue-sharing formula, output traceability system, or enterprise indemnification policy. Customers evaluating commercial use should ask what “public and purchased” covers, which licenses apply, and whether API and enterprise customers receive additional contractual protections.
Mirelo presents the product as augmenting sound professionals by automating tedious synchronization and producing a first draft. The likely effects will vary. Amateur creators may gain sound design they would otherwise skip; editors may use it for temp tracks and variations; studios may accelerate repetitive work. At the same time, clients could use automated drafts to pressure prices for entry-level or routine sound work.
The realistic conclusion is not that AI will or will not replace sound designers. It is that automation may reduce some manual tasks while increasing the value of creative direction, selection, mixing, dialogue work, bespoke Foley, and final quality control.

The central business risk: bundling
At funding time, Mirelo expected API usage to be a major short-term revenue source and planned to expand its creator workspace. The financing was intended for research and development, product work, go-to-market activity, hiring, and growth from a team of roughly 10 people. The company did not publicly provide a dollar-by-dollar allocation.
Its core venture challenge is straightforward: large video-model companies can bundle audio into products that already own the creator relationship. Mirelo must show that customers will pay separately for superior synchronization, editable layers, cross-platform compatibility, specialized quality, and integrations with professional tools.
That is a credible opportunity, but it remains a business assumption rather than an established outcome. Native audio may be sufficient for casual users, while professional users may value control enough to choose a specialist. The market will be determined by how much better and more editable the specialist workflow is—and whether that advantage survives rapid improvement in bundled video products.
What to evaluate before adopting Mirelo
- Synchronization: Test footsteps, impacts, fast cuts, vehicles, and multiple simultaneous actions. Plausibility is not enough if effects must be manually repositioned.
- Editability: Check whether one effect can be replaced, extended, looped, or inpainted without disturbing the rest of the timeline.
- Unwanted audio: Look for invented speech, music, metallic artifacts, repetitive ambience, and incorrect interpretations of ambiguous images.
- Duration limits: Confirm whether the chosen Studio, plugin, API, or partner workflow supports the full length of the project. Earlier SFX 1.5 documentation described a 10-second input limit, while later API material described support for videos up to 10 minutes with scene detection and parallel generation.
- Rights: Verify commercial permissions, watermark rules, enterprise terms, and whether output rights differ across direct and partner access.
- Reproducibility: For production work, ask about model versioning, deterministic behavior, API stability, and the ability to reproduce approved assets.
Bottom line
Mirelo’s $41 million seed round is a bet that sound will become a distinct production layer for generative video, not merely a checkbox inside a video model. The company’s opportunity is strongest where creators need synchronized effects that can be revised, layered, and used across different video tools.
Its unresolved challenge is equally clear: if native video audio becomes good enough and easy enough, a standalone audio provider must prove that professional control, interoperability, and iterative editing justify the extra product and cost. Mirelo is therefore best understood as an attempt to become the control layer for audio across visual media—not simply a fix for silent clips.
