Microsoft Teams can now translate speech in meetings and calls and play the translation in a simulation of the speaker’s voice. The feature is called Interpreter, and it is no longer merely “coming soon.” But “clone your voice” is shorthand: Microsoft describes temporary, in-session voice simulation, not a permanent voice model. Interpreter also has a Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing requirement, supports a limited set of languages, and should not be treated as a substitute for a professional interpreter in high-stakes conversations.
What Teams Interpreter does
Interpreter turns spoken language into translated speech. A participant speaks in their language; Teams recognizes the speech, translates it, and generates audio in the listener’s selected language. The generated voice can simulate the original speaker, or participants can use a preset automated voice.
This is different from translated captions, which display text rather than speak the translation. It is also not the same as making someone speak a language fluently in the room: audio is processed by Teams and translated audio is delivered to participants. Microsoft documents Interpreter for Teams meetings and calls, though availability and controls can vary by tenant and client.

Microsoft’s current documentation calls the voice feature voice simulation. “Clone your voice” is understandable shorthand, but may suggest a permanent, reusable replica that Microsoft does not describe.

Voice simulation, not a permanent voice clone
Microsoft says Interpreter analyzes short speech segments during processing to generate translated speech that aims to preserve characteristics such as tone and pitch. It says voice samples and biometric data are not stored after processing. That is a claim about Interpreter’s voice handling, not a blanket statement about every Teams feature, recording, transcript, or third-party service.
Because speech is processed in the cloud, “not stored” does not mean “not processed.” Organizations should tell participants when AI interpretation and voice simulation are in use, and check their policies for AI, audio processing, biometrics, recording, and consent. A simulated voice could also confuse listeners, especially if a meeting is recorded or its translated audio is shared elsewhere.
Availability, languages, and licensing
As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft documents Interpreter as available, with the usual caveat that rollout, region, Teams client, tenant settings, and licensing affect what users see. Microsoft’s current list contains nine supported speaking and listening languages:

That is not “any language.” Also distinguish Interpreter’s spoken translation from multilingual speech recognition, which can provide translated captions and transcripts without the same spoken Interpreter experience.
Microsoft says Interpreter is included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, with 20 hours of interpretation per user per month; use beyond that is subject to available capacity. Users also need an eligible Microsoft 365 base license and an eligible Teams license. A Teams subscription by itself is not enough for the documented Interpreter experience. Check the applicable licensing and policy for your organization rather than assuming every meeting participant has the same entitlement.
For context, the US Microsoft pricing page showed Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at $18 per user per month with annual billing or $25.20 per user per month with a monthly commitment when checked in August 2026. A qualifying Microsoft 365 plan is required, and prices and eligibility vary by plan, customer, and market. See Microsoft’s current pricing page before budgeting. If translation is only an occasional need, the additional license may be difficult to justify.

How to use Interpreter
In a supported meeting or call, open the language or audio controls—often under More actions (…) and Language and speech—then open Interpreter, choose the language you want to hear, and start interpretation. Depending on the controls available, choose Simulate my voice or a preset automated voice. Microsoft Support lists Ava, Andrew, and Fable Turbo as preset voices, with Ava documented as the default automated voice.

Administrators should check licensing and organizational AI rules, decide whether voice simulation is appropriate for sensitive meetings, and make sure participants understand whether translated audio is being used.
Simultaneous or consecutive interpretation?
Simultaneous interpretation generates translation while the speaker talks. It can keep a meeting moving, but a delay, interruptions, or overlapping voices may make it harder to follow.

Consecutive interpretation starts after the speaker finishes, making the exchange more turn-based. Microsoft announced this mode for Teams on Windows, Mac, and the web in April 2026. It can make a two-language conversation easier to track, at the cost of pauses and a slower rhythm. Which mode works best depends on how participants take turns and how much time the meeting allows.
How reliable is the translation?
Voice simulation does not make the translation itself more reliable. Errors can enter at several points: speech recognition may mishear an accent, a name, or speech obscured by background noise; translation may mishandle idioms, humor, ambiguity, or technical terms; and generated speech may sound unnatural or fail to convey the speaker’s intended emphasis. Crosstalk and rapid speaker changes add further challenges. Expect some delay, and do not assume speaker attribution or emotional nuance will always be right.
Microsoft describes support for multi-speaker, mixed-language conversations, but that is not proof of perfect accuracy or professional-interpreter quality. For legal, medical, safety-critical, regulatory, diplomatic, or otherwise consequential discussions, use a qualified human interpreter or a human-in-the-loop process unless your organization has validated the system for that specific use.

Teams Interpreter or another approach?
Teams Interpreter is most compelling for organizations already using Microsoft 365 Copilot that want convenient spoken translation inside Teams for recurring, lower-risk collaboration. It avoids asking participants to switch to a separate service, but the nine-language list and licensing requirement may rule it out for some teams.
DeepL Voice for Meetings is a Teams-integrated alternative whose Microsoft AppSource listing covers additional languages, including Dutch, Polish, Russian, Swedish, and Turkish. It is a separate product with its own commercial and data-processing considerations; the listing directs buyers to contact DeepL for pricing rather than giving a public price. Compare language coverage, permissions, privacy terms, and total cost before choosing it.
For meetings where a mistranslation could materially harm someone or create legal, financial, or safety consequences, a professional human interpreter remains the safer choice. The trade-off is higher cost and coordination, but humans can clarify ambiguity, manage terminology, and respond to nuance in ways an automated system may not.

If Interpreter is missing or not working
- Check that the user has Microsoft 365 Copilot and an eligible Microsoft 365 and Teams license.
- Confirm the feature has reached the tenant and the current Teams client, and that the administrator has enabled it through meeting policy.
- Update or restart Teams, then check the meeting’s language and speech controls again.
- Test with one of the documented languages in a new meeting and with clear, non-overlapping audio.
- If voice simulation is unavailable, try a preset automated voice. If spoken interpretation is unavailable, consider multilingual speech recognition for translated captions and transcripts.
- Before wider rollout, test delay, specialist vocabulary, mixed-language turns, speaker changes, recording and transcript behavior, and whether the monthly allowance meets demand.
