The Microsoft Surface Laptop is one of the most polished Windows ultraportables available, but its premium design is easier to justify than its premium price. The current consumer family includes 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch models, and they are not equivalent: the 13-inch version has a 60Hz display, UFS storage, fewer security conveniences, and fewer ports, while the 13.8-inch and 15-inch models deliver the fuller Surface experience.
This review covers the currently documented Snapdragon X-based consumer generation and keeps it separate from Microsoft’s June 2026 announcement of the next Surface Laptop generation using Snapdragon X2 processors. Exact pricing, availability, and configurations vary by market.
Verdict
The Surface Laptop is a strong choice for students, Microsoft 365 users, professionals, and frequent travelers who want a refined Windows 11 laptop with a touchscreen, useful 3:2 display, excellent input hardware, and a restrained aluminum design. The 13.8-inch model is the best balance for most buyers; the 15-inch model is unusually portable for its screen size and adds a microSD card reader.
It is not the best value by default. At premium pricing, competitors may offer OLED displays, more powerful graphics, broader processor choice, more ports, convertible designs, or better value. Snapdragon ARM compatibility is also a more important buying question than benchmark numbers. Before purchasing, verify that your VPN, accounting tools, peripherals, development environment, games, and specialist applications work properly.

Which Surface Laptop is this?
“Surface Laptop” now describes a family rather than one configuration. The table below covers the current consumer models documented by Microsoft. Do not assume that a cheaper model includes the features of the larger versions.
| Model | Processor | Display | Memory and storage | Weight | Notable differences |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch | Snapdragon X Plus, 8-core | 1920×1280, 3:2, 60Hz, 400 nits | 16GB; 256GB or 512GB UFS | 2.7 lb | Fingerprint power button; no Surface Connect or microSD |
| 13.8-inch | Snapdragon X Plus, 10-core, or X Elite, 12-core | 2304×1536, 3:2, up to 120Hz, 600 nits | 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB; removable 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB Gen 4 SSD | 2.96 lb | Windows Hello face authentication; Surface Connect |
| 15-inch | Snapdragon X Elite, 12-core | 2496×1664, 3:2, up to 120Hz, 600 nits | 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB; removable 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB Gen 4 SSD | 3.67 lb | Adds MicroSDXC Express reader |
The next Surface Laptop generation was announced on June 16, 2026, with Snapdragon X2 processors and a starting MSRP of $1,599. That announcement should not be confused with reviews or specifications for the Snapdragon X-based generation above. Retail availability and exact configurations should be checked before purchase. Microsoft says the new generation can deliver up to 58% more graphics performance than the previous generation, but this is a Microsoft benchmark claim rather than independent testing. Design and build quality
The Surface Laptop’s strongest argument is its total hardware experience. The enclosure uses anodized aluminum, with a smooth, restrained appearance that feels more substantial than a typical mainstream Windows notebook. Microsoft describes the finish as fingerprint resistant and says the 13.8-inch and 15-inch enclosures contain at least 67.2% recycled content, including 100% recycled aluminum alloy. Those are manufacturer claims, not an independent sustainability audit.
The minimalist construction looks premium without being flashy. The benefit is most apparent in everyday contact: the solid keyboard deck, metal surfaces, clean edges, and tightly integrated display make the laptop feel like a carefully designed product rather than a collection of components. The trade-off is that Microsoft uses the slim enclosure to keep the port selection controlled, and the premium finish does not make the machine a workstation or a fully modular computer.
Color availability varies by size and market. Check the exact configuration rather than assuming every finish is offered across the family.
The 3:2 touchscreen is excellent for work
The 3:2 aspect ratio is one of the Surface Laptop’s most useful distinguishing features. Compared with a common 16:10 panel, it provides more vertical space for documents, web pages, email, coding windows, and long spreadsheets. You spend less time scrolling through portrait-oriented content.

A high refresh rate makes scrolling and touch interaction feel more fluid, although the available refresh behavior can depend on settings, workload, and power mode.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
The 13-inch model is a meaningful downgrade rather than simply a smaller version. Its 1920×1280 panel runs at 60Hz and is rated at 400 nits, with 178 pixels per inch. It remains suitable for ordinary productivity, but buyers who associate the Surface Laptop with a particularly smooth, bright display should choose the 13.8-inch or 15-inch model.
The 3:2 shape is less ideal for widescreen video. Movies and many television shows may display larger black bars than they would on a 16:9 screen. The glossy touchscreen can also reflect windows and overhead lighting, and 600 nits is useful but not a guarantee of comfortable outdoor viewing in direct sun. HDR support can improve compatible content, but it does not turn the laptop into a professional reference display.
Size comparison: 13-inch vs. 13.8-inch vs. 15-inch
13-inch: the travel-first option
The 13-inch Surface Laptop weighs 2.7 pounds and is 0.61 inches thick. Its 50Wh battery is rated by Microsoft for up to 23 hours of local video playback or up to 16 hours of active web use.

However, it gives up several features that define the larger models: the 60Hz display is less fluid, the panel is dimmer, storage uses UFS rather than a removable Gen 4 SSD, memory tops out at 16GB in the documented specifications, and biometric sign-in uses a fingerprint-reader power button rather than Windows Hello face authentication. It also lacks Surface Connect and a microSD reader.
13.8-inch: the best overall balance
The 13.8-inch model weighs 2.96 pounds and combines a compact footprint with the 120Hz, 600-nit 3:2 display. Its 54Wh battery is rated for up to 20 hours of local video playback or 13 hours of active web use.
This is the model most buyers should consider first. It supplies the premium display, face authentication, Surface Connect, and removable SSD options without the extra size of the 15-inch model. Choose at least 32GB of memory if you expect to keep the laptop for years while running many browser tabs, creative applications, virtual machines, or development tools.
15-inch: the large-screen specialist
The 15-inch model weighs 3.67 pounds and has a 66Wh battery. Microsoft rates it for up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of active web use. It retains the 120Hz, 600-nit 3:2 display and adds a MicroSDXC Express card reader.
It is a compelling choice for large spreadsheets, multitasking, documents, and photographers who regularly move files from cards. Its weight remains reasonable for a 15-inch laptop, but it is less convenient in small bags and does not provide the discrete graphics performance expected by many users shopping for a large premium notebook.

Keyboard, touchpad, and touchscreen
The larger models include a backlit keyboard with a full function row, dedicated Copilot key, and what Microsoft calls optimized key travel. The layout is conventional enough for office work, and the large palm rest suits long typing sessions. Whether the key feel is ideal is subjective: buyers who prefer very deep, sharply tactile keyboards may favor some ThinkPad models.
The precision haptic touchpad is a major strength. It offers adjustable click sensitivity, a configurable right-click area, and adaptive touch functionality. Haptic feedback avoids the uneven physical click that can occur across a large mechanical touchpad. The Copilot key is more debatable: it provides direct access to Microsoft’s assistant features, but some users may prefer a traditional key in that position.
Touch input is useful for scrolling, quick selections, and occasional interaction with Windows, even though the clamshell design is not a tablet replacement. The 3:2 screen gives touch gestures more vertical room, while the glossy surface reinforces the usual trade-off between direct interaction and reflections.
Snapdragon performance and ARM compatibility
The Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite configurations use Qualcomm Adreno integrated graphics and a 45-TOPS Hexagon NPU. For Microsoft 365, web browsing, video calls, streaming, and ordinary multitasking, the platform is a sensible fit. Windows 11 can run applications compiled for ARM as well as many traditional x86 applications through emulation.
That distinction matters. “Runs Windows” does not mean every application, installer, driver, or plug-in behaves like it does on an x86 laptop. Native ARM applications generally offer the best efficiency and compatibility. Emulated applications may work well, but behavior can vary. Driver-dependent software is the highest-risk category.
Before buying, verify compatibility for:
- VPN, endpoint-security, and corporate management clients.
- Older accounting, inventory, and business applications.
- CAD, engineering, scientific, and specialist creative tools.
- Printers, scanners, audio interfaces, USB security keys, and other peripherals.
- Docker, virtual machines, emulators, Linux workflows, and development toolchains.
- Game launchers and titles that depend on anti-cheat drivers.
- Adobe applications and any plug-ins your workflow requires.
The integrated Adreno GPU is appropriate for everyday graphics and light creative work, but this is not the right family for CUDA-dependent workflows, serious 3D rendering, demanding gaming, or applications that require a discrete GPU. The NPU is useful only where Windows or an application supports the relevant AI workload; its TOPS rating alone does not guarantee a visible productivity benefit.
Battery life: impressive claims, careful interpretation
Microsoft’s battery figures are test-dependent and should not be treated as a promise of multiple full workdays. The documented claims are:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 13-inch: up to 23 hours of local video playback or 16 hours of active web use.
- 13.8-inch: up to 20 hours of local video playback or 13 hours of active web use.
- 15-inch: up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of active web use.
Local video playback is lighter and more consistent than a mixed day of bright-screen web browsing, video meetings, cloud synchronization, external displays, and sustained application use. Refresh-rate settings, screen brightness, Wi-Fi conditions, browser choice, processor configuration, and background applications all affect runtime.

The newer Snapdragon X2 announcement uses different headline figures—up to 20 hours for 13.8 inches and 19 hours for 15 inches—so those numbers should not be mixed with the older models’ specifications.
Webcam, microphones, speakers, and security
The 13.8-inch and 15-inch models use a 1080p Surface Studio Camera with Windows Hello face authentication. This is more convenient than typing a password and generally better suited to a premium laptop than a fingerprint-only login.
The 13-inch model also has a 1080p camera, but uses a Windows Hello fingerprint power button instead. Independent coverage has also criticized the 13-inch model for lacking a physical camera privacy shutter. TechRadar’s 13-inch review discusses those limitations.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows Studio Effects can provide software-assisted camera features such as framing and background effects, but camera quality still depends on lighting. If privacy is important, plan to use a physical cover carefully or choose a model and workflow that meets your organization’s requirements. Speaker configuration also differs: Dolby Atmos speakers are listed for the 13.8-inch and 15-inch models, while the smaller model should not automatically be assumed to offer the same audio experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ports and connectivity
The 13.8-inch model includes two USB-C/USB4 ports, one USB-A 3.2 port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Surface Connect. It supports DisplayPort 1.4 and charging through USB-C or Surface Connect.
The 15-inch model adds a MicroSDXC Express card reader, making it the most practical option for photographers and other users who frequently transfer removable media. The 13-inch model has two USB-C/USB 3.2 ports, USB-A, and a headphone jack, but no Surface Connect or microSD reader.
The selection is better than on some ultra-thin laptops, but it is still limited for wired-network users, creators with several peripherals, and desk setups with multiple displays and storage devices. A USB-C/USB4 dock is a realistic additional cost. Microsoft says the larger models can support Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock and other accessories, but USB4 support should not automatically be presented as an unconditional promise of full Thunderbolt 4 functionality in every scenario.

Storage, memory, and repairability
The 13.8-inch and 15-inch models use removable Gen 4 SSDs in documented 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations. That is a meaningful advantage for data recovery, replacement, and some future service scenarios. The 13-inch model uses UFS storage and should not be grouped with the larger models’ removable SSD design.
Removable storage does not mean upgradeable RAM. The laptops use LPDDR5x memory configured at purchase, so choose capacity carefully. A 16GB model may be adequate for office work, but 32GB or 64GB is safer for heavier multitasking and long-term use.
Microsoft lists replacement components and repair information, and has announced a Surface Repair Tool with guided diagnostics and workflows for eligible components such as the battery, display, touchpad, and motherboard. Repairability still depends on the exact generation, available parts, tools, service options, and cost. A repair guide is not a guarantee of inexpensive or comprehensive repair.
Surface Laptop vs. the competition
Surface Laptop vs. MacBook Air
The MacBook Air is the clearest alternative for buyers deciding between Windows and macOS. The Surface offers Windows-specific compatibility, a touchscreen, a productivity-friendly 3:2 display, and—on the larger models—more built-in port variety and Windows Hello face authentication.
The MacBook Air remains compelling for people who do not need Windows-only software or touch input and who prefer macOS, Apple’s trackpad ecosystem, and Apple Silicon. An independent RTINGS comparison found the Surface Laptop 7th Edition 15-inch stronger in refresh rate, ports, and battery life, while the MacBook Air offered a larger touchpad and better-sounding speakers in that comparison. Results depend on the exact models being compared. See the RTINGS comparison.
Surface Laptop vs. Dell XPS
Dell’s XPS line is a close Windows design competitor, but the range varies significantly by model and year. XPS machines may offer different processor choices, display formats, discrete graphics, and performance levels. The Surface is the simpler choice if you specifically want the 3:2 touchscreen, Surface hardware integration, and a clean Microsoft-designed Windows experience. The XPS may be better when configuration breadth or graphics performance matters. Compare current Dell XPS models.
Surface Laptop vs. Lenovo Yoga
Lenovo Yoga models are worth considering if you want a convertible hinge, pen input, OLED options, or aggressive discounts. The Surface provides a more focused clamshell design and its distinctive 3:2 display, while Yoga specifications vary widely. Compare the exact processor, panel, weight, ports, and warranty rather than the family names. See Lenovo’s Yoga range.
Surface Laptop vs. business laptops
ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, and HP EliteBook models may be better for organizations that prioritize service contracts, enterprise deployment, conventional ports, lifecycle support, and parts availability. The Surface Laptop’s polished consumer design should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a business-class support program. Microsoft’s Surface for Business products can use different processors, configurations, warranties, and support terms from consumer models. See Surface for Business.
Who should buy the Surface Laptop?
- Buy the 13.8-inch model if you want the best balance of portability, display quality, biometric convenience, and serviceable storage.
- Buy the 15-inch model if large documents, spreadsheets, multitasking, or a built-in microSD reader matter more than minimum weight.
- Buy the 13-inch model if low weight is the priority and you accept the 60Hz display, lower brightness, fingerprint sign-in, UFS storage, and reduced connectivity.
- Choose a MacBook Air if you prefer macOS and do not depend on Windows-only software or touch input.
- Choose Dell XPS or another performance-oriented Windows laptop if you need more graphics capability, processor choice, or a wider range of configurations.
- Choose Lenovo Yoga if a convertible design, pen support, or OLED panel is more important than the Surface’s traditional clamshell design.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the exact size, generation, processor, RAM, and storage capacity.
- Check whether the display is 60Hz/400 nits or 120Hz/600 nits.
- Verify that your essential ARM software, drivers, peripherals, VPN, and games are supported.
- Choose enough memory at purchase because the RAM is not a normal user-upgradeable module.
- Budget for a dock if you use multiple monitors, wired networking, or several USB devices.
- Check current price, stock, warranty, return policy, and repair availability in your country.
Final verdict
The Surface Laptop earns its premium reputation through design consistency: a solid aluminum enclosure, useful 3:2 touchscreen, refined keyboard and haptic touchpad, modern wireless connectivity, and strong Windows integration. Those advantages are meaningful in daily work, but they do not automatically make the laptop good value.
The 13.8-inch model is the safest recommendation for most buyers. The 15-inch version is better for screen space and removable-media workflows. The 13-inch model is appealing only when portability outweighs its display, storage, security, and connectivity compromises. Whichever size you choose, treat Snapdragon compatibility and the final configuration price as decisive—not secondary—questions.
