Status as of August 18, 2026: Microsoft’s public status page reports its consumer products as operational. It does not confirm a broad, active Outlook.com outage, and the available information does not establish a current Microsoft incident number or repair statement. That does not rule out a problem limited to a Microsoft 365 organization, account, app, browser, or network. Check the status source for the Outlook product you use before treating the issue as a Microsoft-wide outage.
Is Outlook down right now?
Not according to Microsoft’s public consumer status page, which reported its products operational when checked on August 18, 2026. That status is not proof that every Microsoft 365 business tenant or individual Outlook account is healthy. No current incident ID, affected-user scope, cause, or recovery estimate is established here, so the headline claim that Microsoft is working to fix a persisting broad outage should not be treated as confirmed.
Use “outage” only when Microsoft has posted an official incident or status entry, or when credible reports clearly establish a wider failure. Without that confirmation, describe the symptom more narrowly—for example, “some users cannot load Outlook.com” or “mail is failing in one organization’s Exchange Online tenant.” Microsoft’s public status page is the first check for consumer services.
Which Outlook service might be affected?
“Outlook” can mean several products that do not share every failure mode. A problem in one does not establish that the others are down.

- Outlook.com or Hotmail: Personal mail accessed on the web, including Microsoft consumer accounts.
- Outlook on the web for Microsoft 365: An organization’s hosted mailbox; its health may be visible only to that tenant’s administrators.
- New Outlook and classic Outlook for Windows: Desktop apps that can fail locally or after a particular app update even when webmail works.
- Outlook for Mac, iOS, and Android: Separate clients that may have app-specific, device, or sign-in problems.
- Exchange Online: The business email service behind many Microsoft 365 work and school accounts.
- Third-party mail apps: Connections through a Microsoft account or Exchange can fail because of the app, authentication, or service.
Microsoft’s Outlook.com known-issues page is specifically about Outlook.com; it directs Outlook for Windows users to separate troubleshooting information. A failure in classic Outlook, for instance, is not by itself evidence of an Outlook.com or Exchange Online outage.
How business users can check tenant-specific service health
Microsoft 365 administrators can see service issues relevant to their organization in the admin center. The public consumer status page and a tenant’s Service health view answer different questions: a consumer page may be normal while one organization has an Exchange Online issue.
- Sign in to admin.microsoft.com with an administrator account.
- Open Health, then select Service health.
- Review Active issues Microsoft is working on, then open a relevant entry for its incident ID, affected services, user impact, status, updates, and any mitigation.
- Check Issue history if the failure may have been recently resolved.
- If no matching issue appears, use Report an issue and consider enabling email notifications for incidents and advisories.
Viewing Service health requires a suitable administrator role, such as Service Support admin or Helpdesk admin. Microsoft explains the dashboard and its status information in its Service health documentation.

Microsoft distinguishes an advisory, where a service remains available but some users are affected, from an incident, where a major service or function is unavailable. Status updates can describe investigation, degradation, interruption, restoration, extended recovery, or service restored. “Restoring service” does not necessarily mean every user has recovered; look for the scope and latest update rather than relying on a headline or an old post.
What Microsoft has documented about Outlook.com issues
Microsoft’s known-issues page, last updated in May 2026, lists resolved or issue-specific problems—not evidence of an active August outage. Its entries include failures affecting in-app support, sending and receiving associated with a storage mismatch, storage displayed as 0/0 GB, and access errors including HTTP 404 or “There was a problem sending emails.” The page also describes some account-alias behavior as “by design.”
One historical Outlook.com incident involved an incomplete software rollout that generated excessive internal routing traffic and overwhelmed routing-plane servers. Microsoft said availability recovered while engineers investigated residual issues. That account explains a past incident; it does not identify the cause of any current report.
For the specific documented storage-display mismatch, Microsoft’s workaround was to delete messages with attachments larger than 10 MB, sign out and back in so storage information could update, and restore deleted messages afterward if needed. This is not a general remedy for mail outages, and deleting messages is unnecessary unless the symptoms match that storage issue.

Outlook.com will not load
- Open Outlook.com in a private or incognito window, then try another supported browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers; Microsoft recommends excluding Outlook.com from ad-blocking settings for certain loading problems.
- If the issue persists, clear Outlook.com cookies and site data, sign out, close all browser windows, and sign in again.
- Test on another network, such as a mobile hotspot, to distinguish a local connection problem from a service issue.
You cannot send or receive messages
- Check whether the mailbox has reached its Microsoft storage limit.
- Look for a message stuck in the Outbox and test the same account in Outlook on the web.
- Check whether the failure involves only attachments or particular recipients, rather than all mail.
- Consider whether Microsoft is asking you to verify the account or update security information.
- Avoid repeatedly resending the same message during a suspected delivery incident; it may send later and create duplicates.
The desktop app crashes or behaves differently
- Test Outlook on the web or the mobile app to see whether the account works outside the desktop client.
- Record the app edition, version or build, update channel, operating system, and exact action that triggers the crash.
- For a managed work or school account, ask an administrator to check tenant Service health.
- Do not delete the Outlook profile before checking whether web access works. If the problem began after an update, record the build before attempting repair or rollback.
A historical 2026 incident affected some classic Outlook users on version 2605 when right-clicking messages; Microsoft’s mitigation included reverting the change or using an unaffected version, including version 2606. That example is not evidence that the current report has the same cause. The incident record is maintained by the University of Pennsylvania’s IT service: classic Outlook incident history.
Only sign-in or an account alias is affected
Separate an authentication problem from a mail-delivery failure. Microsoft notes that some accounts using a third-party email address as their only Microsoft account alias may be required to add a first-party Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN alias; Microsoft classifies this behavior as by design, not an outage.
What to avoid during a confirmed service incident
- Do not repeatedly change your password unless Microsoft or your organization’s administrator directs you to.
- Do not delete and recreate an account, rebuild a profile, or reinstall Outlook as a first response—especially if Outlook on the web is failing too.
- Do not change DNS settings to fix a cloud service incident.
- Do not treat a third-party outage tracker or social-media post as proof of Microsoft’s cause or incident scope.
- Do not call a sign-in failure an email-delivery failure without testing those functions separately.
- Do not call the service fixed because some users can reconnect; recovery may be gradual.
When to contact support
If Microsoft reports normal service but the problem continues in one account or device, collect the exact error, time and time zone, affected Outlook product, app version, network, and whether web access works. Personal-account users can use Microsoft account recovery or Outlook.com support. For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator; they can compare the symptoms with tenant Service health and report an unlisted issue.
For a reported incident, the most useful update identifies the Microsoft incident number, timestamp, affected service and users, current status, mitigation, and whether restoration is complete. Without those details, the extent and cause of a reported Outlook problem remain unverified.
