OneNote is the better general-purpose notebook and collaboration hub. Nebo—renamed MyScript Notes on iOS and Android in September 2025, while the Windows app remains Nebo—is the better handwriting-recognition and handwriting-to-text specialist. Choose OneNote for Microsoft 365 integration, shared notebooks, mixed media and a long-term archive. Choose MyScript Notes for pen-first writing, conversion to editable text, structured handwritten documents and direct PDF annotation. Many iPad-and-Windows users get the best result by using both.

The fundamental difference: digital binder versus handwriting engine
OneNote is an information system
OneNote arranges content as notebooks, sections, section groups and pages. A page can combine typed paragraphs, ink, screenshots, images, links, tables, printouts, recordings, files and tags. That makes it suitable for meeting records, project documentation, research and a searchable personal archive. Microsoft describes cloud-connected OneNote apps and sharing across Windows, macOS, the web, iOS and Android (Microsoft’s version guide).
MyScript Notes/Nebo is a pen-first workspace
MyScript Notes provides four formats: fixed-page Notebooks, reflowing Documents, expandable Boards and imported PDFs (MyScript’s handwriting overview). It is designed around writing with a stylus, turning that writing into editable text and keeping diagrams or handwriting usable during the process. It is not intended to replace every feature of a collaborative knowledge-management platform.

Which app has better handwriting recognition?
MyScript Notes/Nebo wins for handwriting that must become usable text. MyScript makes recognition, searchable handwriting, custom dictionaries, shape conversion and pen gestures core features. In a Document, you can mix handwriting and typed text, scratch out words, insert text and convert writing without first switching to a keyboard. Converted material can be exported to Word, PDF, PNG, SVG or Nebo format (MyScript Notes features).

OneNote supports ink and handwriting conversion, but the experience depends on the client. In supported desktop editions, the documented route is:
- Open the Draw tab.
- Choose a pen or highlighter and write.
- Use the lasso/selection tool to select the ink.
- Choose Ink to Text.
Microsoft documents this for OneNote for Microsoft 365, OneNote 2024, OneNote 2021 and OneNote 2016 (Microsoft’s handwriting instructions). Do not assume the same command or recognition behavior in OneNote mobile, Mac, web and Windows; Microsoft documents client differences (web-versus-desktop differences).
Organization, search and long-term storage
Choose OneNote for a deep mixed-format archive
OneNote’s hierarchy is useful when a work or school life generates many simultaneous subjects: a notebook for a department or degree, sections for projects or courses, pages for individual meetings, and tags for follow-up. Attachments, links, screenshots and Microsoft content can remain beside the ink. Its breadth can also feel cluttered, and an overgrown hierarchy needs maintenance.

MyScript Notes provides folders, collections and its four note formats. Global search can find handwritten content, which is valuable when old notes remain in ink. Its simpler model suits a personal study library, but users managing deeply nested teams, projects and permissions may outgrow it sooner than OneNote.

PDF annotation: similar goal, different workflow
MyScript Notes keeps PDF as a first-class document
Import a multi-page PDF, write on it, add keyboard text, images or shapes, manage pages and use handwriting conversion where supported. This is a direct fit for worksheets, papers, forms and readings (product capabilities; iOS version guidance).
OneNote places a printout in a notebook
OneNote can insert a PDF printout and let you ink, type or add images around it. That is useful when the PDF belongs with meeting notes or a project, but it is not the same as editing the original PDF document. Check whether your required output must preserve the source PDF’s structure, text layer and page behavior before choosing this workflow.
Collaboration and Microsoft integration
OneNote is the clear choice for simultaneous work. Microsoft documents sharing, presence, co-authoring and shared notebooks in OneNote for the web and Microsoft 365 service descriptions (Office Online service description). It fits Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Word and organizational Microsoft accounts.

Devices, naming and synchronization
The 2025 name change matters
Nebo became MyScript Notes on iOS and Android in September 2025; the Windows application continues to use Nebo. Existing Nebo purchases remain valid for MyScript Notes at no additional cost, but a Windows license does not automatically grant cross-platform access under every lifetime-license term. Confirm the exact plan before buying or migrating (MyScript’s current product information; license terms).
Platform coverage is not feature parity
OneNote has Windows, macOS, web, iOS/iPadOS and Android versions. MyScript supports Windows, iOS and Android, with the product name differing by platform. OneNote’s browser and mobile clients do not expose every desktop command. MyScript’s features, account requirements and license scope can also vary by operating system and plan.
Sync and offline questions to verify
- Can the specific client open and edit existing notes without a connection?
- When does synchronization occur, and how are simultaneous edits handled?
- Which account and storage provider are required?
- Can you export a local backup before changing devices?
MyScript lists iCloud on iOS and Google Drive or Dropbox, with a free MyScript account required for cloud synchronization (getting-started guidance). OneNote uses cloud-connected notebooks; allow synchronization to finish before retiring a device. Neither app should be judged by a generic “works offline” label without naming the client, account and plan.

OneNote
Microsoft presents OneNote as free to download and use. Some premium capabilities and surrounding storage or Microsoft 365 services require a subscription. Microsoft 365 Family was displayed at $12.99 per month on Microsoft’s U.S. product page during the cited pricing check; treat that as a dated regional price, not a permanent worldwide rate (OneNote product page). OneNote for Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025; use a currently supported client.

MyScript Notes/Nebo
MyScript describes a limited free version, a seven-day trial, subscription options and lifetime licenses. Free access limits new-page creation, while the applicable paid unlock adds unlimited pages and cloud synchronization. Prices vary by region and promotion, so check the local App Store, Google Play or Windows listing. “Lifetime” applies to the purchased version and does not promise every future feature or operating-system compatibility (legal notice).

Student with an iPad and Windows laptop
Use MyScript Notes for lecture handwriting, diagrams, math and PDF worksheets; export polished notes to Word or PDF. Use OneNote instead, or in addition, if courses use shared class notebooks or you need a durable Microsoft archive.
Microsoft 365 office worker or team
Choose OneNote. Shared notebooks, browser access, co-authoring and Microsoft account integration outweigh a narrower handwriting advantage.
PDF-heavy researcher
Choose MyScript Notes when direct PDF annotation and handwriting conversion are central. Choose OneNote when PDFs are supporting material that must live beside meetings, links, tasks and files.

Windows pen-tablet owner
Test Nebo on Windows if recognition and pen editing are the deciding factors. Choose OneNote if you need the same notes to become a collaborative workplace system.
User avoiding a subscription
OneNote’s free access may be sufficient. MyScript’s lifetime option can suit a pen-first workflow, but verify platform scope and future-support terms rather than assuming one purchase covers every device forever.
User who wants searchable handwriting
MyScript Notes is the safer choice because handwritten-content search is an explicit product feature. OneNote can search and convert ink, but behavior varies by client, language and whether the ink has been converted.

Should you use both?
Yes, when the strengths are complementary:
- Capture handwriting, diagrams or annotated PDFs in MyScript Notes/Nebo.
- Convert selected pages to editable text and export to Word or PDF.
- Place the finished material in OneNote for indexing, attachments, sharing and co-authoring.
Before moving a whole archive, test one representative page containing handwriting, a diagram, a table and a PDF. Exported files may not preserve every original ink behavior or notebook structure.
Final verdict
There is no universal winner. Pick OneNote when organization, Microsoft 365, collaboration and a broad cross-device archive matter most. Pick MyScript Notes/Nebo when the pen is your primary input and recognition, conversion, structured handwriting or PDF work matter most. Use both when you want MyScript’s capture-and-convert experience and OneNote’s long-term home for shared knowledge.
