No HoloLens 3 was announced. In December 2022, Microsoft executive Scott Evans said a successor to HoloLens 2 would have to be a “meaningful update,” not a small refresh that made customers replace working equipment for roughly 10% better capability. Microsoft was describing the bar for a possible future device—not naming a product, setting a launch date, or promising that one would ship.

What Microsoft actually said in December 2022

Reporting published on December 15, 2022, described Microsoft as “looking for the right design point” for a future HoloLens successor. Evans said customers did not want to be made obsolete for marginal gains and that a replacement needed to produce a stronger return on investment. The comments appeared in Thurrott’s account of Microsoft’s position.

  • What was being considered: a successor with a substantially better overall value proposition.
  • What was not announced: the name “HoloLens 3,” final specifications, price, release window, or a shipping commitment.
  • Hardware areas identified: display quality, tracking, sensors, and battery life.

“HoloLens 3” was therefore a convenient label used in coverage and discussion, not a formal Microsoft product announcement.

Why a minor refresh would not work for industrial customers

HoloLens 2 deployments are usually business programs rather than individual gadget purchases. A company replacing dozens or hundreds of headsets must budget for hardware, accessories, device management, application validation, worker training, support and spare units. A modest performance gain may not repay that disruption.

The business case has to include more than faster hardware

  • Operational results: shorter training, fewer maintenance errors, safer procedures or more effective remote assistance.
  • Migration cost: testing custom applications, retraining staff and updating identity, security and device-management policies.
  • Compatibility: existing Dynamics 365, Teams, Dataverse and line-of-business workflows must continue to work or have a credible migration path.
  • Total cost of ownership: procurement, repairs, batteries, accessories, software licenses and eventual replacement inventory.

Microsoft did not publish a numerical ROI threshold. Its point was that the improvement had to be large enough for customers to justify replacing functioning equipment, rather than being a slightly newer specification sheet.

What a “meaningful update” would have required

The 2022 comments identified four core hardware priorities. Comfort, reliability and application compatibility are practical consequences of the same enterprise requirement, even though Microsoft did not publish a final specification.

Display

A better display could make instructions, text and 3D models easier to read in real workspaces. Field of view, brightness, image stability and legibility all affect whether technicians can use overlays instead of consulting a separate screen.

Tracking and sensors

More dependable spatial tracking and sensing would help digital content remain anchored while a worker moves, handles tools or works in changing lighting. Reliability matters more than a peak laboratory demonstration when a deployment must operate across factories, vehicles and customer sites.

Battery life

Longer runtime reduces charging rotations, spare-device pools and interruptions during shifts. Battery gains also have to be balanced against weight and heat, because a larger battery that makes the headset uncomfortable may undermine adoption.

Ergonomics and reliability

For an enterprise, “meaningful” would also imply a headset workers can wear for the intended task, with dependable calibration, connectivity and durability. Those are decision criteria, not confirmed specifications for an unreleased device.

HoloLens 2’s role in Microsoft’s mixed-reality strategy

Microsoft positioned HoloLens primarily as an enterprise and industrial platform, part of its effort to bring Windows and mixed-reality tools into workplaces. Reported use cases included guided work instructions, technician training, hands-free information, remote expert support and visualization of digital content in physical environments.

Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Guides and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist software connected those scenarios to business systems. The December 2022 coverage also reported that Microsoft had delivered 34 monthly HoloLens 2 software updates and had combined functionality from Guides and Remote Assist in a then-current update. Those figures describe the historical product state, not current availability.

The IVAS context

The U.S. Army’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) was one of HoloLens-related technology’s highest-profile military applications. The 2022 report mentioned soldiers experiencing nausea and headaches during testing. That illustrates how difficult display, tracking and ergonomics can be, but it does not prove that IVAS issues caused Microsoft’s commercial roadmap to stall. Military procurement and battlefield requirements are distinct from ordinary enterprise deployments.

Analysts cited in the same coverage estimated that about 300,000 HoloLens headsets had sold since launch. That was an analyst estimate, not an audited Microsoft sales figure.

What happened after the 2022 discussion?

Date Event What it means
December 15, 2022 Microsoft described a future successor as needing a “meaningful update,” with better display, tracking, sensors and battery life. Design criteria, not a HoloLens 3 announcement.
June 2023 HoloLens 2 moved toward Windows 11 through Windows Holographic version 23H1. Upgrade required at least the May 2021 21H1 update, build 20346.1002, or a newer qualifying build; older devices needed intermediate updates.
November 2024 Windows Holographic version 24H1 was identified as the final HoloLens 2 feature release. New feature development ended, while security servicing continued.
December 2024 Microsoft documentation says HoloLens devices were no longer manufactured. HoloLens 2 became a finite-inventory platform rather than an actively manufactured product line.
December 31, 2026 Dynamics 365 Guides and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist are scheduled to become unavailable. Application availability ends before the documented device-security horizon.
December 2027 Microsoft lists security servicing for HoloLens 2 through this month. Security updates are not the same as new features, hardware production or application availability.
February 28, 2028 Microsoft documentation lists this as the minimum security-update period for units purchased by February 28, 2025 under UK product-security rules. A regulatory minimum for that purchase scenario, not a promise of new features or applications.

Microsoft’s HoloLens release notes contain the feature-release, manufacturing and servicing history. The later timeline does not establish what happened to every internal prototype or partner project; it does establish that no publicly available HoloLens 2 successor emerged as a continuation of the line during the period covered here.

What the current status means for buyers

As of August 18, 2026, an existing HoloLens 2 fleet may still be usable, but it should not be treated like a normal actively manufactured enterprise platform.

Check the application horizon first

Microsoft says Dynamics 365 Guides and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist will no longer be available after December 31, 2026. Remote Assist documentation also identifies dependencies on Dataverse, Dynamics 365 Core Service and Microsoft Teams. Confirm which parts of your workflow depend on those services and whether a documented migration exists.

Separate device servicing from business continuity

A headset can receive security updates while the applications that made the deployment valuable approach end of availability. Security servicing through December 2027 does not guarantee replacement hardware, new features or continued Guides and Remote Assist access.

Plan for finite hardware

Because manufacturing ended in December 2024, evaluate remaining inventory, battery health, repair options, calibration, regional procurement and spare units before expanding a fleet. Used equipment can be technically functional yet unsuitable for a multi-year rollout.

Measure the workflow, not just the headset

Document the worker outcome you need—hands-free instructions, remote diagnosis, training accuracy, safety or reduced travel—and calculate migration, redevelopment and retraining costs alongside device prices.

Migration paths and their trade-offs

Path Advantages Limitations
Retain HoloLens 2 temporarily Preserves trained workflows and avoids an immediate hardware change; security servicing remains scheduled for a defined period. No new manufacturing, finite replacement stock and a December 31, 2026 end date for Guides and Remote Assist.
Use Teams mobile Microsoft points Remote Assist customers toward comparable collaboration functionality in Teams mobile; many workers already have compatible phones. It does not reproduce HoloLens’s hands-free, heads-up spatial experience and may require redesigned procedures.
Adopt another mixed-reality platform May offer newer displays, processors, sensors or ergonomics and a more active hardware roadmap. Custom applications, device management, accessories, industrial certification and support geography must be reassessed; Dynamics workflows may not transfer directly.

Microsoft describes Teams mobile as the continuing route for similar Remote Assist collaboration in its Remote Assist overview and HoloLens FAQ. “Similar” does not mean feature-for-feature equivalence: a phone or tablet cannot provide the same hands-free overlays.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling HoloLens 3 an announced product or assigning it a release date.
  • Confusing the final 24H1 feature release with the end of all HoloLens support.
  • Assuming security servicing keeps Guides and Remote Assist available after December 31, 2026.
  • Buying used units without checking batteries, repairs, regional restrictions and application dependencies.
  • Assuming Teams mobile is a complete replacement for spatial, hands-free work.
  • Treating the IVAS military program and commercial HoloLens deployments as one identical business case.
  • Presenting the approximately 300,000-unit analyst estimate as Microsoft-reported sales.

So, was HoloLens 3 canceled?

The documented evidence supports a narrower conclusion. Microsoft considered what a successor would need to deliver, but did not announce HoloLens 3 or commit to a launch. By the end of 2024, HoloLens manufacturing had stopped; by the end of 2026, key mixed-reality applications are scheduled to disappear. Those decisions make the 2022 statement look like an investment threshold rather than a launch teaser.

Possible explanations include a hardware bar that was difficult to meet, uncertainty about the scale of the enterprise market, or a shift toward software, partnerships, military work and broader Windows or Teams integration. Public Microsoft material does not establish which explanation—or combination—determined every successor effort.
