Microsoft Learn MCP Server is a free, hosted Model Context Protocol service at https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp. Connect that Streamable HTTP endpoint from an MCP-compatible coding assistant or agent, then let it search Microsoft documentation, fetch complete pages as Markdown, and find official code samples. Microsoft says the service requires no API key or other authentication.

What the Microsoft Learn MCP Server does

The service gives MCP clients a direct connection to Microsoft’s public technical documentation. Microsoft describes it as a way for GitHub Copilot and other AI agents to bring trusted, current information from official Microsoft documentation into a working conversation. Microsoft Engineering says the server launched in June 2025.

It is a remote service, not a package you install on your computer. Your MCP client opens a Streamable HTTP connection and discovers the tools exposed by the server. The underlying knowledge service is also used by Ask Learn and Copilot for Azure.

The endpoint and access requirements

Use this endpoint exactly:

https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp

  • Transport: Streamable HTTP.
  • Authentication: Microsoft’s overview says none is required.
  • Cost: Microsoft describes the hosted service as publicly available at no charge.
  • Content: publicly available Microsoft technical documentation and official code examples.
  • Client: an MCP-compatible application such as GitHub Copilot, VS Code, Visual Studio, MCP Inspector, Copilot Studio, Foundry agents, or your own compliant MCP client.

The endpoint is not a normal webpage or REST URL intended for a browser address bar. A browser request can therefore return 405 Method Not Allowed. That response usually means the request used the wrong method or did not include the MCP negotiation expected by a Streamable HTTP client; it does not by itself indicate that the service is down.

How to connect it to an AI coding assistant

The exact dialog names differ by client version, but the process is the same: open the client’s MCP-server settings, add a remote HTTP server, paste the endpoint, save, and allow the client to discover tools.

  1. Update your coding assistant to a release that supports remote MCP servers and Streamable HTTP.
  2. Open its MCP, extensions, or agent-tools settings. In VS Code or Visual Studio, use the MCP server configuration surface supplied by your installed release; GitHub Copilot exposes MCP configuration through its agent tooling.
  3. Create a new remote server entry. Set the transport to Streamable HTTP if the client asks for a transport.
  4. Enter https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp as the server URL.
  5. Leave API-key, bearer-token, and OAuth fields empty unless your organization’s client independently requires a credential for its own policy.
  6. Save or start the server, then inspect the discovered tools. You should see the Microsoft documentation search, page-fetch, and code-sample search functions.
  7. Ask the assistant a narrowly scoped question, such as “Find the current Microsoft guidance for configuring an Azure App Service health check and cite the official page.” Check that the answer is grounded in a returned Learn page.

Some clients store this information in a JSON configuration file rather than a settings panel. Use the client’s documented schema for a remote HTTP MCP server; do not convert this URL into a local command/args entry, because there is no local executable to launch.

The three Microsoft Learn tools

microsoft_docs_search

This performs semantic search across Microsoft’s official technical documentation. Use it to locate the most relevant page when you know a product or task but not the article URL. Include version, language, platform, and task details in the query to reduce ambiguity.

microsoft_docs_fetch

After search returns a promising result, fetch the page with this tool. It converts the Microsoft documentation page to Markdown, giving the model the complete article rather than relying on a search-result summary. Fetch the page before asking for exact prerequisites, command syntax, limits, or configuration values.

microsoft_code_sample_search

This searches official Microsoft and Azure code snippets. An optional language filter helps when you need C#, Python, JavaScript, PowerShell, Java, or another supported language. Ask for a specific task and language, then verify the sample’s surrounding documentation before adapting it.

Useful workflows

Ground an implementation answer

  1. Search for the feature and target product.
  2. Fetch the highest-confidence Learn page.
  3. Search code samples with the language your project uses.
  4. Ask the assistant to explain assumptions and identify any version-specific instructions.

Check whether guidance changed

Search the feature again instead of trusting an old conversation. Microsoft says the underlying knowledge service refreshes incrementally after content updates and performs a full refresh once a day. Release notes communicate service updates, so verify tool availability and endpoint behavior when a client stops discovering the server.

Build a documentation-aware agent

A custom MCP client can expose the same remote endpoint to an agent that first searches, then fetches authoritative pages, and finally searches code samples. Keep the retrieved page URL in the agent’s answer so a developer can audit the recommendation.

Why a browser or basic HTTP test returns 405

Cause: a browser sent the wrong request

Typing the endpoint into a browser normally sends a GET request and expects HTML. The Learn endpoint expects MCP Streamable HTTP traffic, so a 405 is an expected response to that kind of probe.

Fix: test through an MCP client

Configure the URL as a remote MCP server in a compliant client. Do not judge availability by whether the URL renders a webpage.

Cause: unsupported client transport

Older clients may support only a different MCP transport or local process servers. Upgrade the client or choose one that explicitly supports Streamable HTTP.

Cause: proxy or enterprise filtering

A corporate proxy can block long-lived HTTP connections or rewrite methods and headers. Try the same configuration on an unrestricted network, then ask the network administrator to permit HTTPS access to learn.microsoft.com and preserve streaming HTTP behavior.

Cause: tool discovery fails after connection

Confirm that the client reports a connected server and lists tools. Restart the MCP session after changing configuration. If the service has recently changed, consult Microsoft Learn release information and your client’s MCP logs.

Security and operational considerations

  • The service searches public documentation; it is not a channel for private tenant data, internal wikis, or your user profile.
  • No Microsoft API key is needed according to the service overview. Never paste unrelated Azure secrets into an MCP configuration field.
  • Review the permissions and data-handling policy of the MCP client or agent you use. The server being unauthenticated does not make every client’s conversation storage or telemetry policy identical.
  • Require the agent to provide source URLs and distinguish fetched Microsoft guidance from its own synthesis.
  • For regulated or offline environments, cache and review the specific Learn pages your process depends on rather than assuming the remote service is permanently available.

Comparison checklist for documentation connectors

When evaluating Microsoft Learn MCP against another documentation connector, compare the facts that affect your workflow:

Axis Microsoft Learn MCP What to verify in another connector
Source authority Public Microsoft technical documentation and official Microsoft/Azure code samples Whether content is first-party, mirrored, or community-written
Retrieval functions Semantic document search, full-page fetch, and code-sample search Whether it can fetch complete pages and filter samples by language
Transport Streamable HTTP Remote transport and client compatibility
Authentication None required according to Microsoft API keys, OAuth, tenant setup, or IP restrictions
Cost Publicly available at no charge Request quotas and billing terms
Freshness Incremental updates plus a daily full refresh, according to Microsoft Update schedule and release-notice practice
Client compatibility MCP clients that support Streamable HTTP Whether your IDE or agent supports the required transport

If your actual task is generating clean images of Microsoft Learn pages for documentation, testing, or an AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

One GET request is enough:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://learn.microsoft.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the 63 capture options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device and retina settings, PDF output, custom JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, geolocation, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, caching, and usage reporting. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

There are 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get an access key.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the endpoint as a normal REST API?

No. It is a Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint and should be connected through an MCP-compatible client.

Does it include private Azure documentation?

The documented corpus is publicly available Microsoft documentation. It does not provide user-profile information or private tenant content.

How current are returned pages?

Microsoft says updates are applied incrementally, with a full refresh once daily. For high-impact changes, open the fetched Learn page and verify its revision information.
