Microsoft Intune no longer supports User Enrollment with Company Portal for new iPhone and iPad enrollments. The change applies to Intune’s profile-based Company Portal enrollment method, not to every form of Apple User Enrollment or to the Company Portal app as a whole. Microsoft’s current guidance recommends account-driven Apple User Enrollment for new personal-device deployments. Existing devices enrolled with the deprecated method remain supported for management and technical support under Microsoft’s current documentation.
What changed—and what did not
Apple User Enrollment is a broader enrollment framework designed for personally owned devices, with organizational management focused on work data. Intune’s former User Enrollment with Company Portal option was a profile-based implementation of that framework: users started in Company Portal, downloaded an enrollment profile, and installed it through iOS or iPadOS Settings.

Apple ended support for profile-based User Enrollment around the iOS and iPadOS 18 transition. Intune consequently deprecated the corresponding Company Portal enrollment method. Microsoft’s current documentation says the method is unavailable for new enrollments; it does not say that all Apple User Enrollment has ended. Microsoft recommends account-driven User Enrollment instead. See Microsoft’s overview of iOS and iPadOS enrollment methods and its Company Portal setup page.

The change was announced in the context of Apple’s iOS/iPadOS 18 release. Microsoft’s iOS/iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 support announcement explains that platform transition. HTMD published an explanation on July 18, 2024; Microsoft’s current documentation, including a setup-page update dated April 9, 2026, is the better source for the present status.

Which enrollment method fits the device?
Choose based on ownership, privacy expectations, and the management controls the organization needs. Apple User Enrollment does not provide supervision, so it is not equivalent to the broader controls available for supervised corporate devices.

Find the deprecated profile in Intune
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices, then select By platform.
- Select iOS/iPadOS.
- Open Device onboarding, then select Enrollment.
- Review Enrollment types and identify profiles configured as User enrollment with Company Portal.
Microsoft’s setup documentation describes this enrollment area. Admin-center labels can change, so use the current Microsoft page if a label differs in your tenant. An assigned legacy profile is not proof that a new enrollment through it is available; distinguish the profile’s assignment from the status of devices already enrolled.

Do not remove a working legacy enrollment merely because the method is deprecated. Microsoft documents continued support for existing devices, but that is not a permanent guarantee independent of normal platform, application, policy, and service conditions. Decide whether to retain those devices or migrate them based on your support horizon and tested target flow.

- Inventory affected devices. Identify users and devices enrolled through the old profile. Record ownership, iOS/iPadOS version, assigned policies, compliance state, and business-critical apps.
- Classify by ownership and need. Assess account-driven User Enrollment or web-based enrollment for personal devices; assess ADE for organization-owned devices. If the need is app-data protection rather than device management, separately evaluate MAM without enrollment.
- Check prerequisites and dependencies. Review the Apple MDM Push certificate, Apple identity configuration, Entra authentication and conditional-access policies, enrollment restrictions, certificates, Wi-Fi, VPN, app configuration, app protection, and any required SSO extension or JIT registration setup.
- Pilot the target flow. Test representative iPhones and iPads, users, managed apps, certificates, VPN/Wi-Fi profiles, and conditional-access scenarios. Follow Microsoft’s current account-driven User Enrollment instructions rather than relying on the retired setup steps.
- Test migration and recovery. Establish whether your specific target method requires unenrollment, profile removal, or clean enrollment. Do not assume that deleting Company Portal migrates a device. Document recovery steps and verify how work data, apps, and access behave for pilot users.
- Communicate before rollout. Explain the enrollment steps and the intended separation between organizational and personal data. Tell users with a functioning existing profile not to remove it unless their migration instructions explicitly require that action.
- Cut over and monitor. Stop assigning the deprecated enrollment type to new users. Assign the replacement to pilot groups first, then expand after reviewing enrollment failures and compliance reporting.
- Retire assignments deliberately. Remove obsolete assignments after confirming which devices migrated and which are intentionally staying on the existing profile. Keep support instructions for any retained legacy devices.
Troubleshoot enrollment and support issues
A new device cannot use the old Company Portal enrollment flow
That is consistent with the current deprecation: existing devices may continue to work even though new enrollments through the profile-based method are unavailable. Test the replacement on a genuinely new or clean enrollment scenario; an already-enrolled device does not demonstrate that the retired path remains open for new devices.
Account-driven enrollment fails
Check the device’s iOS/iPadOS version and Apple identity prerequisites, the assigned Intune enrollment profile, enrollment restrictions, and conflicting profile assignments. Review Intune enrollment records and logs, Entra sign-in logs, conditional-access results, and residual MDM state before attempting repeated enrollment. If JIT registration is part of the design, verify the required Apple SSO extension configuration as well.

Company Portal does not recognize a web-enrolled device
Microsoft documents a configuration-dependent issue involving web-based enrollment and JIT registration when the required SSO extension policy is absent. Check that configuration before concluding that web-based enrollment itself is unsupported. The known issue and relevant options are described in Microsoft’s personal-device enrollment guidance.
Certificates, VPN, Wi-Fi, or other policies stop applying
Apple User Enrollment has a deliberately limited management scope. A profile designed for device enrollment or supervised devices may not be supported under User Enrollment. Validate each configuration against Microsoft’s Apple User Enrollment feature and policy guidance before attributing a failure to the enrollment change.

A user is prompted to enroll again, or a device appears more than once
Before removing a profile, check for duplicate device records, a changed profile assignment, an incorrect user-device association, and whether the device is actually enrolled with the deprecated method. Company Portal may be present for app access or compliance reporting rather than enrollment; determine its role in that user’s current setup.
Administrators think Company Portal has been discontinued
The retired item is one enrollment method, not the entire app. Depending on the enrollment design, Company Portal can still have app-access or diagnostic roles. Microsoft discusses a continuing log-collection role in this Intune enrollment-policy discussion.
