Microsoft Intune’s cross-platform device inventory expansion is no longer an April 2025 forecast. HTMD reported on March 20, 2025, that hardware inventory for Android, iOS/iPadOS, and macOS was expected to reach general availability in April. Microsoft later announced that the expansion became available in May 2025.
Microsoft said the feature collects 74 Apple properties and 32 Android properties by default. Individual device inventory is available to Intune administrators, while multi-device queries and custom reporting require Intune Advanced Analytics or the Microsoft Intune Suite. The feature improves hardware visibility, but it is not a complete CMDB, software-license-management system, or unmanaged-device discovery platform.
The April 2025 date was a forecast, not the final release date
The original HTMD report remains useful historical context, but its wording should not be treated as current. The timeline is:

Microsoft’s official announcement is the better source for the production timing: the cross-platform expansion became available in May 2025, not April 2025. Availability and interface labels can still vary as Microsoft updates Intune.

What Intune device inventory provides
Intune already provided hardware-inventory capabilities for Windows. The expansion extends comparable device-level visibility to:
- Android
- iOS and iPadOS
- macOS
The data is intended to help administrators identify and manage the hardware and state of enrolled devices from the Intune administration experience. Microsoft gave serial numbers and SIM-card information as examples of the inventory data that can be collected.
Microsoft announced that the default collection includes:

- 32 Android properties
These figures describe supported inventory properties, not 74 or 32 complete hardware records. A property can represent an identifier, operating-system value, SIM-related value, or another device attribute. The fields are platform-specific, and a particular device may return only some of them.

Supported platforms and enrollment caveats
iPhone, iPad, and Apple devices
Apple coverage includes iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The exact inventory returned depends on the device, operating-system version, management mode, ownership, and Apple’s privacy and management restrictions.

A corporate-owned device enrolled through an organization’s standard Apple management workflow should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a personally owned device using user-approved enrollment. Apple may restrict identifiers or other information in some scenarios. Intune cannot expose a property that the platform or enrollment model does not make available.
Android devices
Android inventory is not identical across every Android enrollment mode. Microsoft’s data schema specifically identifies Android Enterprise corporate-owned dedicated, fully managed, and corporate-owned work-profile scenarios among supported data sources.
Returned values can also vary by manufacturer, Android version, hardware design, management ownership, and vendor behavior. Therefore, “Android support” should not be read as a promise that every personal or unmanaged Android device exposes the same inventory fields.
Personal devices and bring-your-own-device deployments require particular caution. A blank property may reflect privacy controls or platform limitations rather than a missing physical component.
Where administrators can view the inventory
Microsoft’s May 2025 announcement says the inventory is available in Resource Explorer to Intune administrators. Microsoft documentation also uses Device Inventory for the Windows experience formerly known as Resource Explorer. The exact label and navigation can change between tenant experiences.

- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Open Devices.
- Select the relevant platform, device, or device record.
- Open the inventory, monitoring, Resource Explorer, or Device Inventory view shown for that device.
- Review the hardware and device-state properties returned for the platform.
Do not assume that a Windows screenshot or an older article’s menu path exactly matches the current Apple or Android experience. Microsoft says the Windows Resource Explorer experience was renamed Device Inventory; Resource Explorer for Configuration Manager data accessed through tenant attach retains its original terminology.

Individual viewing is different from fleet reporting
One of the most important practical distinctions is between looking at one device and querying a fleet.

This means that basic visibility does not necessarily provide unrestricted, organization-wide, SQL-style reporting. Check the tenant’s licensing and entitlement before designing a refresh dashboard or audit process around cross-device queries.

Useful operational scenarios
Refresh and replacement planning
Serial numbers, model information, operating-system data, and other supported properties can help administrators identify devices approaching replacement or verify that records correspond to the physical fleet.
Help-desk troubleshooting
A technician can use the managed device record to confirm identity and review available hardware or state information before asking a user to locate details manually.
SIM and cellular audits
SIM-related information can help with cellular-device checks and investigations. A blank SIM or telephone-related field must not be interpreted as proof that a device has no SIM, cellular capability, or assigned number.

Compliance investigations
Inventory can be considered alongside Intune compliance, ownership, enrollment, configuration, and lifecycle information. It gives administrators another source of device context, but it does not replace the compliance record or security telemetry.
Fleet reporting
Organizations with the required Advanced Analytics or Intune Suite entitlement can use supported multi-device querying and custom reporting to build broader views of their Apple and Android fleet.
Important limitations
It is not a complete asset-management system
Intune inventory is device-management data. It does not automatically provide procurement history, depreciation, contracts, financial ownership, service relationships, or a complete CMDB record.
It does not discover unmanaged devices
A device generally needs to be enrolled and communicating with Intune for Intune inventory data to be available. This is not a universal network-discovery system for unknown endpoints.
It is not software-license management
The feature should not be treated as a full software-asset-management or license-entitlement platform. Organizations with those requirements need an appropriate IT asset-management product or another specialized system.
It is not a security replacement
Inventory does not replace endpoint detection and response, vulnerability management, mobile threat defense, or security exposure reporting.

Values may be missing
Not every supported property is populated on every device. Missing values can result from:
- Operating-system privacy restrictions
- Hardware differences
- Enrollment type or ownership
- Unsupported operating-system versions
- Missing SIM information
- Manufacturer implementation differences
- A device that has not checked in recently
It should not be assumed to be real-time
Inventory is collected management data, not necessarily a continuous hardware-telemetry stream. Always check the collection or last-check-in information before making an asset, compliance, or replacement decision.

- Confirm that the device is enrolled in Intune and has checked in recently.
- Confirm the platform and enrollment type are among the supported scenarios.
- Open the device record in the Intune admin center.
- Locate the available inventory, Resource Explorer, or Device Inventory view.
- Check whether expected properties, such as the serial number or SIM information, are populated.
- Compare returned values with the device’s local Settings/About screen or the manufacturer’s record.
- If fleet-wide reporting is required, verify that the tenant has Intune Advanced Analytics or the Microsoft Intune Suite.
- Use only Microsoft-supported interfaces for exporting or querying the information.
The expected result is a set of supported inventory properties associated with the selected managed device. Results will vary by platform, model, operating-system version, enrollment type, ownership, vendor behavior, privacy restrictions, and last successful check-in.

Troubleshooting missing or unexpected data

Should you use another inventory tool?
For many organizations, native Intune inventory is the sensible starting point: it avoids another endpoint agent and connects device data with Microsoft identity, compliance, configuration, and lifecycle workflows.

The commercial decision depends on what “inventory” means in your organization. If it means “show me the hardware properties of devices already managed by Intune,” the native feature may be sufficient. If it means “maintain a complete financial and service record for every asset,” Intune alone is unlikely to be enough.

Bottom line
Microsoft’s Apple and Android inventory expansion closed an important visibility gap for Intune-managed fleets. It shipped in May 2025 and covers Android, iOS/iPadOS, and macOS, with Microsoft reporting 74 Apple and 32 Android properties collected by default.
