Microsoft fixed a Windows 11 version 24H2 problem that stopped some users from dragging emails and calendar items into folders in classic Outlook. The fix arrived in KB5052093, a preview quality update released on February 25, 2025, which updated affected systems to OS Build 26100.3323.
This was not a general repair for every Windows 11 problem. The confirmed issue involved classic Outlook—particularly Outlook for Microsoft 365—and certain high-DPI configurations using legacy display-scaling behavior.
What broke in classic Outlook?
After installing certain Windows 11 24H2 updates, users could no longer drag emails or calendar items from classic Outlook into folders. Microsoft also associated the broader drag-and-drop failure with applications running on high-DPI displays and using legacy DPI-scaling modes.
The issue did not necessarily affect every Windows 11 computer, every Outlook installation, or the newer Outlook app. Microsoft’s documented issue specifically concerned classic Outlook.

Which Windows updates were involved?

Microsoft marked the Outlook issue “STATUS: FIXED.” KB5052093 was distributed gradually, so it might not have appeared in Windows Update for every eligible device at the same time.
How to install the fix today
KB5052093 is a historical preview update, not the latest Windows 11 update in 2026. If the problem still matters on a supported Windows 11 24H2 computer, install the latest applicable cumulative update rather than deliberately searching for the old preview package.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available Windows 11 24H2 updates.
- Restart when prompted, then reopen classic Outlook and test dragging an email or calendar item into a folder.
Check your Windows version and build
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Confirm that the system is running Windows 11 version 24H2 and review the OS build. You can also open Settings → System → About and check Windows specifications.

Microsoft’s temporary workaround
If the fix was not yet offered, Microsoft recommended changing classic Outlook’s display preference:
- Open classic Outlook and select File.
- Select Options.
- Open the General tab.
- Under User interface options, select Optimize for best appearance instead of Optimize for compatibility.
- Select OK.
- Restart Outlook if drag-and-drop does not start working immediately.
This is a workaround, not the underlying Windows repair. It changes Outlook’s display-rendering preference and may affect appearance, scaling, or performance on some high-DPI systems.

If drag-and-drop still fails
- Confirm that you are using classic Outlook, not new Outlook.
- Confirm that Windows is running version 24H2.
- Check Settings → Windows Update → Update history for KB5052093 or a later cumulative update.
- Apply the Optimize for best appearance workaround.
- Restart Outlook and Windows.
- Test another folder or mailbox to determine whether the failure is general or limited to one location.
- If other applications also have drag-and-drop problems, investigate high-DPI and legacy compatibility settings.
Other causes can include Outlook add-ins, a damaged profile, mouse or input problems, or a separate Windows display-scaling issue. Remote Desktop problems documented for Windows 11 24H2 are separate incidents and should not be confused with this Outlook bug.

On a work-managed PC, contact your IT administrator before forcing an update, changing enterprise display policies, or uninstalling an update. Removing a security update should not be treated as a routine fix; rollback is a last resort that requires an administrator to weigh the security risk.

What the fix does—and does not—mean
Microsoft’s update repaired a specific classic Outlook drag-and-drop failure on Windows 11 24H2. It did not mean that every Windows 11 installation was broken, nor did it establish that all problems associated with KB5050094 or KB5051987 were resolved by the same patch.
Users should keep Windows updated rather than avoid updates wholesale. KB5051987 was a security update, and broad update avoidance can leave systems exposed even when a later update introduces a compatibility problem.
