The quickest fix is to remove the old Edge taskbar pin, open Microsoft Edge from Start, then pin the icon for the Edge window that is actually running. A second icon is not always a fault, though: it can represent another browser profile or an Edge-installed website. First check whether you have duplicate icons, separate windows grouped under one icon, or a distinct profile or app window.
Identify what the extra icon represents

A historical Microsoft Q&A report about duplicate Edge taskbar instances describes removing the old pin and pinning the running Edge instance. Microsoft later said it had made changes intended to reduce duplicate-instance problems. That report is a useful workaround, not proof that every extra icon has the same cause.
Rebuild the Edge taskbar pin
- Close every visible Edge window.
- Right-click the old Edge icon on the taskbar and select Unpin from taskbar. If there is more than one Edge icon, remove the pin you no longer want.
- Open Start, find Microsoft Edge, and launch it.
- When Edge is running, right-click its active taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar.
- Close Edge, then reopen it using the new pin. Check whether the extra icon is gone.
The key is to pin the icon belonging to the running Edge window. A shortcut from Start, Search, the desktop, or a previously used profile may not represent the same launcher. If the duplicate remains, repeat the sequence after closing all Edge windows.
Update Edge if the duplicate remains
- Open Edge and enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Let Edge check for updates. Install any available update, then select Restart if prompted.
- After Edge restarts, rebuild the taskbar pin again if necessary.
Edge can also receive updates through Windows Update. Update availability and timing can depend on device settings or organizational policies; see Microsoft’s Edge update guidance and update settings information.

Check whether you are opening another profile
Edge profiles can keep separate settings, favorites, extensions, and browsing contexts. Switching profiles opens a new window, so a work profile and a personal profile may appear as separate taskbar items. A profile badge can be a clue, but it does not prove that the icon is profile-specific.
- Open Edge and select the Profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Check which profile is active and select the one you intend to use.
- Close any window for an unwanted profile. Right-click the taskbar icon for the intended, running profile and pin that icon if you want it available separately.
- Unpin an incorrect or unwanted Edge shortcut only after confirming which profile it opens.
Microsoft explains how Edge profiles work and how to manage them. If you deliberately use separate work and personal profiles, keeping their taskbar shortcuts separate can be useful; you do not need to remove a profile just to remove an unwanted pin.
Check whether the icon is an installed website
An Edge-installed website can open in its own app-like window and use its own taskbar icon. If the window looks like a single website rather than a regular browser window, enter edge://apps in Edge and look for the site. Microsoft documents how to install, manage, and uninstall Edge apps and notes that websites can be used in dedicated windows.

If you no longer want the site app, open its options on edge://apps and choose the available uninstall or remove option. Unpin its taskbar icon too, if it remains. Do not remove an app you intentionally use as a separate desktop-style window.
Change taskbar grouping only if windows are grouped
Taskbar grouping changes how separate windows are displayed; it does not generally repair a stale Edge shortcut. On Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and look for Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels. Choose Never, or the closest available option, to display separate buttons for separate windows.
Labels and choices can vary by Windows version and build. This setting can separate browser windows, not tabs inside one Edge window. Repair Edge without deleting browser data
If updating Edge and rebuilding the pin do not help, try Windows’ built-in repair option:

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, select its three-dot menu or app entry, then choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt and select Repair.
Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings, but back up or sync important favorites, passwords, and other data before proceeding. The Modify option may be unavailable on organization-managed devices. See Microsoft’s Edge repair guidance.
Advanced checks
Profile-specific shortcuts
An Edge shortcut can include a launch argument that opens a particular profile. For example, a target might contain --profile-directory="Profile 7". The executable path and profile name vary, so this is an advanced diagnostic—not a recommended change for most users. Avoid editing the shortcut’s Target field unless you specifically need a profile launcher; preserve the existing target before making any change. Edge is still running in the background
If the pin still behaves oddly after closing the visible windows, save your work, then press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If Microsoft Edge processes remain, ending them can close background activity or unsaved work, so do this only when you are sure it is safe. Then try rebuilding the pin again. Restart Windows if needed.
Virtual desktops or organization management
Windows can show taskbar windows according to the current virtual desktop or across all desktops. If an Edge window seems missing or the taskbar state differs between desktops, check your desktop and taskbar display settings. See Microsoft’s virtual desktop guidance.

Verify the result—and avoid risky fixes
Close Edge, reopen it from the rebuilt pin, and confirm that the expected taskbar icon is active. If you want to check how a second ordinary browser window behaves, open Edge and press Ctrl+N. Separate windows may group under one icon or appear as separate buttons depending on taskbar settings; neither outcome means tabs have become separate windows.
Do not delete Edge’s user-data folder as a routine fix. It can remove local profile data and configuration. Reinstall Edge only if updating, rebuilding the pin, and the supported repair option have failed. Before any reinstall, make sure important browser data is synced or backed up.
The pin-rebuild steps also apply to many Windows 10 PCs, although menu labels and taskbar options can differ from Windows 11. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025; this particular Edge taskbar issue does not, by itself, mean you need to move to Windows 11.
