The HTMD Blog article published on April 5, 2023 described an experimental Edge panel tied to the then-new Bing, with Chat, Compose, and Insights. Its instructions used the edge://flags/#edge-global-media-controls flag. That procedure may no longer work in current Edge. Microsoft now presents comparable AI capabilities through Copilot, while “Discover” can also refer to a newer feed on the Copilot new-tab page.
What “Discover” meant in the 2023 HTMD guide
The original HTMD Blog guide used Discover for an Edge interface associated with the new Bing experience. It was not the same thing as today’s Discover feed.

Microsoft’s current Edge AI page lists Copilot and other features, but availability varies by browser version, device, account, market, language, and organizational policy.
The original 2023 activation method
Use these steps only as historical documentation. The HTMD article tested them on a 2023-era Edge build; it does not establish that the flag remains present or that it will restore Discover today.

- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Enter
edge://flags/#edge-global-media-controlsin the address bar. - Find Global Media Controls.
- Change the setting to Enabled.
- Select Restart, or close and relaunch Edge.
- Look for the Discover control or related Bing interface.
Flags are experimental, version-dependent settings rather than supported long-term deployment controls. If the flag is missing, use the troubleshooting steps below instead of installing an unofficial “Discover restore” extension.
What Chat did
The historical Chat pane provided an “Ask me anything” field for questions. The interface offered three response tones:
- More Creative
- More Balanced
- More Precise
This was the new Bing conversational experience as presented inside Edge. Current Edge directs users toward Copilot for comparable question-answering, but exact buttons, placement, sign-in requirements, and limits depend on the Edge release and account. See Microsoft’s current AI feature documentation rather than expecting the 2023 labels.
What Compose did
Compose generated a draft from a prompt or short piece of text. The historical controls let the user choose:

- Format, such as paragraph, email, or blog post
- Length
The pane included actions such as Generate draft, Copy, Stop, going back, and regenerating. These labels belong to the 2023 interface. Current Edge describes writing help through Copilot, Editor, and text prediction; the workflow may look different and generated text still requires human review for accuracy, confidentiality, legal claims, and business use.
What Insights showed
Insights was the most easily misunderstood part of Discover. The HTMD article described a panel about the site being viewed, including:
- Estimated monthly traffic
- Traffic by country
- How visitors found the site
- Other websites visitors also viewed
- Data-source and feedback controls
The article said the information was anonymous and aggregated from Microsoft Bing and Microsoft Edge. Those figures were estimates supplied by Microsoft’s data systems, not authenticated analytics from the site owner. They should never be treated as a replacement for Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, server logs, Search Console, or another first-party analytics platform. Coverage could be sparse, personalized, experimental, region-limited, or withdrawn; missing data did not mean a site had zero traffic.
Is the old Discover panel still available?
Practically, treat the original panel and its Global Media Controls workaround as legacy content. Current Microsoft materials emphasize Copilot and other Edge features such as AI Theme Generator, tab organization, Read aloud, translation, Editor, and text prediction. The Edge feature directory also warns that availability differs by device, market, and browser version.

For AI questions, use the current Copilot experience. For writing, look for Copilot, Editor, or text prediction. There is no basis to promise that the old Insights screen or its historical traffic estimates can be recovered.
Do not confuse the old panel with the current Discover feed
Microsoft’s enterprise documentation uses Discover for a feed in the Copilot new-tab experience. A managed Edge deployment can provide a refreshed new-tab page with one search/chat entry point, work cards, and separate Work and Discover tabs. This feed is a different product concept from the 2023 Chat/Compose/Insights panel.
Feed visibility policy
On Windows and macOS, Microsoft documents ConfigureNTPFeedTabVisibility for Edge version 148 or later. Its values are:

Changing the policy requires a browser restart. Microsoft notes that tenant configuration, account type, supported language markets, and preview eligibility can affect whether either feed or its toggle appears. See the policy reference and Copilot new-tab documentation.

Important policy and licensing boundaries
The old DiscoverPageContextEnabled policy is obsolete after Edge 127. It is not the control for current Copilot page context; consult Microsoft’s policy notice for replacement controls.
Microsoft documents Browsing with Copilot for Windows and macOS Edge 148 or later in managed environments, with an active Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription and required allow-list configuration. Relevant references include AllowBrowsingWithCopilot and the BrowsingWithCopilotAllowList. These requirements apply to particular commercial deployments; they do not mean every personal Edge user needs a paid subscription for ordinary browsing.

The Global Media Controls flag is missing
- Open
edge://versionand record the exact Edge version. - Check Microsoft’s current Edge AI features page.
- Search Edge Settings for Copilot or sidebar controls.
- Test the current Copilot experience instead of relying on the old flag.
- Avoid extensions that claim to restore Discover until you have checked the publisher, permissions, privacy policy, and compatibility.
A missing flag can mean it was removed, renamed, restricted to another channel, or withdrawn with the experiment.
Discover appears, but Chat or Compose does not
Check sign-in status, Microsoft account versus work account, language and market, organizational policy, and Edge version. Microsoft explicitly says feature availability varies across these conditions. A partial or retired rollout can leave a control visible without the old tools.

Insights has no information
Historical Insights depended on Microsoft’s aggregated coverage. Sparse or absent results are not evidence of zero visits and are not a reason to infer a site owner’s private analytics.
Copilot cannot read the current page
Page-context access is governed by current Copilot policies in managed deployments. Do not try to fix it with DiscoverPageContextEnabled; Microsoft marks that policy obsolete after Edge 127.
The new-tab Discover feed is absent
- Confirm the Edge version and operating system.
- Check whether the Copilot new-tab page is enabled for the tenant.
- Review
ConfigureNTPFeedTabVisibilityand other tenant policies. - Verify supported language, market, account, and preview eligibility.
Microsoft warns that users outside supported locales or markets may not see the Work feed, Discover feed, or feed switcher.
Privacy and safe use
The 2023 article noted that signing in to Chat could result in Microsoft, Rewards, and partner-product emails. Microsoft’s privacy statement also explains that Bing-powered suggestions send typed characters and clicked suggestions to Microsoft, and that users can permit Copilot in Edge to access page content for summaries and assistance.

- Do not paste confidential, regulated, or customer data into consumer AI prompts.
- Confirm which personal or work account is signed in.
- Review tenant policy before enabling page-context access.
- Fact-check every generated draft before publication or business use.
- Inspect permissions before installing any third-party extension that imitates Discover.
Which path should you use?

Administrators should use the Edge Management Service and documented policies, not block internal Edge URLs as a primary control. Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing may be relevant to advanced managed features, but it is not a purchase requirement merely to install Edge.
