Microsoft Edge command-line options are launch-time arguments: you add them when starting the browser, a WebDriver session or (in a different form) a WebView2 host. The documented options below cover proxy routing, automatic DevTools, automation arguments and development diagnostics. They are useful examples, not a complete inventory of every Chromium-derived or Edge-specific switch.
Use the command for your task, make sure you are launching the intended Edge channel, and test risky or experimental flags only in an isolated development profile.
What Edge command-line arguments control
An argument changes how a new Edge process starts. It does not permanently change the browser for every future launch, and it does not necessarily target the same process in every integration. A shell command starts the browser directly; Edge WebDriver passes values through EdgeOptions.args; a WebView2 application uses the separate additionalBrowserArguments capability for arguments intended for the underlying browser process.
Microsoft’s documented examples cover specific scenarios. There is no single, guaranteed list of every switch that works across all Edge versions, operating systems and channels, so treat each option as task-specific and check the documentation for the integration you are using.

Proxy command-line options
Edge normally follows the operating system’s network settings, including its proxy configuration and certificate stores. These switches let you supply an alternative configuration at launch.

Proxy arguments change where browser traffic travels, so verify organizational policy before using them with production data.
Open DevTools automatically on new tabs
Use --auto-open-devtools-for-tabs when every newly opened tab in that launch should start with DevTools visible.

Startup boost can leave a minimal process in the background even after you close the visible window. If DevTools does not open, disable Startup boost at edge://settings/system, close all Edge processes, and run the command again. For a one-off manual session, Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), Command+Option+I (macOS), or F12 opens DevTools without a command-line switch.

Passing arguments through Edge WebDriver
In Edge WebDriver, EdgeOptions.args is the list passed to the Edge process. Values use an equals sign. Microsoft’s examples include start-maximized and user-data-dir=/tmp/temp_profile; in that API list they are supplied without requiring a leading --.

driver.quit()The profile directory should be dedicated to automation. Reusing your everyday profile can cause profile locks, expose personal sessions to tests, or make results depend on extensions and cached state.
Other EdgeOptions that affect launch setup
binaryselects a particular Edge executable or channel.debuggerAddressattaches to an existing debugging endpoint instead of starting a normal session.detachcontrols whether the browser remains open when the WebDriver service stops.excludeSwitchesremoves switches that EdgeDriver would otherwise pass. Microsoft says to omit the--prefix in this list.
WebView2 is a different argument path
When a WebView2 app is launched through WebDriver, ordinary args are passed to the app rather than to the underlying Edge browser process. To send browser-process arguments, use WebView2’s additionalBrowserArguments capability. Do not assume that an argument visible to a WebDriver app automatically reaches the embedded browser.
Executable paths, headless runs and remote debugging
Microsoft’s DevTools MCP documentation lists default executable locations for Stable, Beta and Dev on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Canary on Windows and macOS. Those are defaults, not guarantees: user configuration, Edge version and group policy can change the path, and no Canary Linux path is specified there. If a command reports that the executable cannot be found, locate the installed channel and pass its actual path (or configure the tool’s binary setting).

The same MCP-oriented examples show --headless for a run without a visible window, --isolated for a temporary profile removed on close, and --viewport=1280x720 for the initial viewport. These examples belong to the MCP tooling context; do not treat every wrapper-specific option as a universal Edge browser switch.
msedge.exe --remote-debugging-port=9222This starts Edge with a remote debugging endpoint on port 9222. Protect that endpoint and avoid exposing it to untrusted networks.
Combining switches safely
- Define the task first: proxy routing, DevTools, automation, diagnostics or an embedded WebView2 browser.
- Start with one documented argument and confirm its effect.
- Add a second argument only when its interaction is understood. For example,
--proxy-auto-detectdoes not take effect when--proxy-serveris present. - Use an isolated profile for tests, headless work and experiments.
- Record the Edge channel, executable path and arguments with the test so another machine can reproduce the launch.
Troubleshooting common launch failures
DevTools does not open
An existing Edge process or Startup boost is the usual documented cause. Close every Edge process, disable Startup boost at edge://settings/system, then retry.

Check for --no-proxy-server, which overrides other proxy settings, and check whether --proxy-auto-detect is being used together with --proxy-server. A bypass list also does nothing unless a proxy-server argument is supplied.

WebDriver starts the app but not the browser with the expected flag
For WebView2, ordinary WebDriver args target the app. Move browser-process arguments to additionalBrowserArguments.
The executable cannot be found
Do not assume the Stable path applies to Beta, Dev or Canary. Verify the installed channel and pass the actual binary path; policies and per-user installations can change Microsoft’s documented defaults.
Edge displays an unsupported-flag warning
Microsoft’s policy documentation gives --disable-gpu-sandbox as an example warning: “You’re using an unsupported command-line flag: –disable-gpu-sandbox. This poses stability and security risks.” Do not use that flag as a routine fix. A warning indicates risk, not a harmless cosmetic issue.

Use a unique temporary user-data-dir for each concurrent session, ensure the previous process has exited, and avoid sharing a profile with interactive Edge. Clean up temporary profiles after the run unless you need them for diagnosis.

Security and support boundaries
Some flags disable browser protections or expose debugging interfaces. Microsoft’s command-line security policy warns about potentially dangerous flags when the policy is enabled or unset; disabling the warning policy does not make a flag safe. WebView2 guidance likewise says: “Apps in production shouldn’t use WebView2 browser flags, because these flags might be removed or altered at any time, and aren’t necessarily supported long-term.” Chromium-owned flags are not controlled by Microsoft Edge, so experimental behavior can change independently of Edge documentation.
Keep risky switches out of production launchers, restrict remote-debugging access, and prefer documented options for ongoing automation. Treat a flag as version-sensitive unless the relevant Microsoft documentation says otherwise.
