Microsoft Edge updates released in spring 2024 could mistakenly install an MSIX package named Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows. On some systems, including Windows Server 2022, this made Microsoft Copilot appear in Installed apps.
The package was not a fully enabled Copilot installation. Microsoft Edge Stable 124.0.2478.67, released on April 26, 2024, removed it from affected Windows Server devices. Because Edge 124 is now obsolete, administrators should use a current supported Edge release rather than deploy Edge 124 today.
What happened?
Beginning with Edge 123.0.2420.65, released on March 28, 2024, Edge updates could incorrectly install the Copilot-related MSIX package. The visible result was confusing: Windows could show Microsoft Copilot in the Installed apps list even though the installed component was specifically the chat-provider package.
Microsoft documented the issue as an erroneous package installation affecting selected Windows client editions and Windows Server 2022. It was not documented as a remote-code-execution, privilege-escalation, or other Windows Server security vulnerability.

Microsoft’s release-health documentation says the package did not execute code or processes, acquire, analyze, or transmit device or environment data, and did not fully install or enable Copilot. Those statements apply to this specific chat-provider package; they should not be generalized to every Copilot product or component.

Was Copilot really installed?
Not in the usual sense of a complete, active Copilot application. The Installed apps entry represented an MSIX package associated with Copilot preparation or integration. Its presence alone did not prove that Copilot was enabled for users, running on the server, collecting data, or providing a usable standalone Copilot experience.

It is important to distinguish this package from:
- Copilot in Windows
- Copilot in Microsoft Edge
- Microsoft 365 Copilot
- A separately deployed Microsoft Copilot application
These products can have different deployment methods, policies, licensing, and supported platforms. The Edge incident concerned the chat-provider package and its misleading Installed apps representation.
Edge 124 fix timeline

The exact Windows Server fix was 124.0.2478.67. Edge 124.0.2478.131, released later as an Extended Stable update, should not be confused with the original Stable-channel remediation. Microsoft’s Edge Stable release archive lists the relevant builds.
Which systems were affected?
Microsoft identified the following platforms:
- Windows 11, version 23H2
- Windows 11, version 22H2
- Windows 11, version 21H2
- Windows 10, version 22H2
- Windows Server 2022
This does not mean every installation of these versions was affected, and it does not establish that every Windows Server release was involved. For server administrators, the specifically identified platform was Windows Server 2022.

How to remediate an affected server
1. Update Edge through the approved channel
On a server where the browser is managed locally, open Edge and go to:

Allow Edge to check for updates, install the available update, and restart the browser when prompted. If Edge is deployed through MSI, WSUS, Configuration Manager, Group Policy, or another enterprise tool, that management system may be the authoritative update path instead of the browser’s update page.
The historical minimum build relevant to Windows Server cleanup was 124.0.2478.67. In 2026, do not downgrade to or newly deploy Edge 124 merely to address this old incident. Install the current supported Edge release approved by your organization.

2. Verify the result
After updating and restarting, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for:
- Microsoft Copilot
- Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows
The corrective Edge update was designed to remove the package from affected Windows Server systems. Actual results can vary if the update has not completed, the server has not restarted, enterprise policy has preserved the package, or the entry belongs to a different component.

3. Investigate only when necessary
Administrators can inspect package registrations with PowerShell:

Select-Object Name, PackageFullName, Version, InstallLocationThis is a diagnostic command, not Microsoft’s primary remediation. Package names and visibility can differ by Windows build, servicing state, user context, and management policy.

- Confirm the installed Edge version rather than assuming the update completed.
- Restart the server if a restart is pending.
- Check whether the item is the chat-provider package or another Copilot, WebView2, or enterprise-deployed component.
- Review AppLocker, WDAC, Group Policy, Configuration Manager, Intune, custom image, and software-deployment controls.
- Check whether the package was manually installed or is being reintroduced by management tooling.
- Escalate through your organization’s support process if it remains on a later supported Edge build.
Do not begin by deleting package files or registry entries. Such manual removal can leave inconsistent package-registration state and does not address a management system that reinstalls the component. Do not advise enabling consumer Copilot features on production servers, and do not downgrade Edge solely to remove the entry.
Current perspective
This was a resolved 2024 Edge servicing incident, not an ongoing Edge 124 rollout or a current Windows Server Copilot deployment. The practical response for a machine that still shows the entry is to verify the operating system and Edge build, apply a current supported Edge update, restart, and investigate only if the package remains.
The incident also demonstrates why the name shown in Installed apps should not be treated as proof that a complete application is active. In this case, Microsoft described the visible component as a non-enabled chat-provider package mistakenly installed by Edge updates.
