Microsoft appears to have changed the feature-control mechanism behind Windows 11’s undocumented native NVMe workaround, according to community testing. Reports point to Windows 11 25H2 build 26200.8117, associated by users with the March 2026 update KB5086672, as a point where the older registry override stopped working. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed that it intentionally disabled the tweak.

This does not mean Windows 11 has lost NVMe support. Normal installations continue to use Microsoft’s supported stornvme.sys inbox driver. The affected experiment exposed a different driver, nvmedisk.sys, through undocumented Feature Management overrides.

What Microsoft appears to have changed

The reported change affects an unsupported method for forcing Windows 11 to use nvmedisk.sys, a newer Microsoft NVMe implementation found in client builds and associated with Microsoft’s newer server-side storage work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 normally uses stornvme.sys for NVMe storage. Microsoft documents that inbox driver in its Windows storage documentation, including its NVMe-related guidance. The registry workaround did not add NVMe compatibility to Windows; it attempted to switch the operating system to a different, hidden storage path.

That distinction matters. Saying that Microsoft “disabled NVMe” or made all NVMe SSDs slower would be inaccurate. The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion:

Microsoft appears to have changed the feature-control mechanism that enabled an undocumented native NVMe driver path in some Windows 11 Insider builds.

The conclusion comes from enthusiast reports and secondary coverage, not from a Microsoft announcement explicitly stating that the registry tweak was disabled. Microsoft’s Insider documentation also warns that preview features can be gradually rolled out, changed, removed, or never released publicly.

Why enthusiasts enabled nvmedisk.sys

The native driver attracted attention because it could reduce some of the legacy translation work associated with the traditional Windows storage path. Community testing and secondary reports claimed possible improvements in random I/O performance, latency, and CPU utilization.

The potential benefit is most relevant to workloads that issue many small storage operations or keep the drive busy at high queue depths, including:

Reported percentage gains should not be treated as universal. Figures ranging from modest improvements to very large increases appeared in community discussions, but no standardized Microsoft client benchmark establishes a typical result. Outcomes depend on the SSD controller, NAND, firmware, PCIe generation, CPU platform, queue depth, power mode, thermal state, and test methodology.

The feature IDs reportedly changed

Earlier community instructions used three Feature Management override values. The reported commands were:

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 735209102 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 1853569164 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 156965516 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

After the older method stopped working, users on an enthusiast forum reported that 735209102 had been replaced on some builds by 3244671118:

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 3244671118 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 1853569164 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 156965516 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

These are community-supplied commands, not a Microsoft-supported procedure. Reports conflict over whether the replacement value worked consistently across later builds. The available evidence does not identify an official Microsoft feature ID or a supported consumer enablement process.

Some users reported that a storage entry disappeared from Device Manager after updating, while another override restored it. Those observations varied by build and hardware, so they should not be interpreted as proof that every Windows 11 25H2 installation behaves the same way.

Which Windows 11 builds are involved?

The strongest specific community report identifies Windows 11 25H2 build 26200.8117 as the point where the old override stopped working. Users described that build as being associated with the March 2026 update KB5086672.

This is a reported boundary, not an official Microsoft compatibility statement. Do not assume that every device running build 26200.8117 is affected. Hardware, Insider channel, prior registry state, feature rollout status, and servicing history can all change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The broader version context is:

  • Windows 11 24H2: build family 26100.
  • Windows 11 25H2: build family 26200.
  • Insider channels: Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview can contain different feature states and code.

You can check the installed build by pressing Windows key + R, entering winver, and selecting OK. To inspect the servicing history, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history.

Microsoft’s own Insider release notes for the 26100 and 26200 build families emphasize that preview functionality is not necessarily a promise about the final public release. A change in an Insider build therefore does not prove that Microsoft has permanently abandoned native NVMe support for stable Windows 11.

See Microsoft’s Release Preview documentation and its explanation of how preview features can change or be removed.

How to check which NVMe driver is active

The presence of nvmedisk.sys on disk does not prove that Windows is using it. To inspect the active driver:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Storage controllers.
  3. Open the relevant Microsoft or NVMe storage-controller entry.
  4. Select Properties → Driver → Driver Details.
  5. Check whether the listed file is stornvme.sys or nvmedisk.sys.

The exact Device Manager layout varies by Windows build, storage controller, and system configuration. The device may appear under Storage controllers, Disk drives, or another category. Use the driver-details view as verification rather than relying only on the device name.

Why Microsoft might have suppressed the workaround

Microsoft has not stated why the registry path changed. Several explanations are plausible, but none should be presented as confirmed:

  • Supportability: Microsoft may not want consumer systems depending on an undocumented driver path.
  • Compatibility: SSD-management, backup, imaging, and monitoring utilities may expect the conventional storage stack or device identity.
  • Encryption and recovery: A low-level storage change can affect boot measurements or trigger BitLocker recovery on some systems.
  • OEM validation: PC manufacturers validate particular combinations of firmware, drivers, and storage hardware.
  • Ongoing development: The feature may be redesigned for a later supported release or withdrawn from client builds.

Secondary coverage reported compatibility problems involving Samsung Magician, Western Digital Dashboard, duplicate or misidentified drives, and possible BitLocker recovery prompts. Those are reported failure modes, not universal outcomes. They are nevertheless important reasons not to treat the tweak as a harmless performance switch.

Risks of enabling an undocumented storage driver

Changing the storage path on a boot drive is more consequential than enabling an ordinary cosmetic Windows feature. Possible problems include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows failing to boot after a driver or storage-stack change;
  • a BitLocker recovery-key prompt;
  • SSD utilities failing to identify the drive or showing it twice;
  • backup, imaging, partition-management, or health-monitoring tools behaving incorrectly;
  • a Windows update invalidating the override;
  • the same numeric feature ID controlling a different feature in a later build;
  • inconsistent device names or storage categories; and
  • more difficult troubleshooting because the configuration is unsupported.

If an experiment fails on the boot drive, recovery may require offline registry repair, System Restore, recovery media, or a Windows reinstall. For that reason, a primary workstation or business PC is a poor test platform.

Should you try to re-enable it?

For most Windows 11 users, no. The normal stornvme.sys path is supported, already included with Windows, and expected by Microsoft and OEM tooling.

Testing may be reasonable only for an enthusiast who has a recoverable non-production system, a current backup, a tested BitLocker recovery key, and a workload that can be measured reliably. A secondary, non-boot NVMe drive is safer than the system drive.

Before any experiment:

  • Back up important data and verify that the backup can be restored.
  • Save the BitLocker recovery key and confirm that it is accessible.
  • Create a recovery USB and know how to reach Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Record the current Windows build, driver details, and registry state.
  • Use repeatable tests with the same workload, queue depth, power mode, and thermal conditions.
  • Do not assume a synthetic benchmark improvement will translate into faster everyday use.

ViVeTool is sometimes used by enthusiasts to expose hidden Windows features, but it does not make an unsupported storage-driver configuration safe or supported. The same caution applies to copying a driver package from another Windows edition or forcing an incompatible driver through Device Manager.

How to undo the registry change

If you personally created only the reported DWORD values, remove only those values or restore a known-good registry backup. Example rollback commands are:

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 735209102 /f
reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 3244671118 /f
reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 1853569164 /f
reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverrides" /v 156965516 /f

These commands are examples, not guaranteed universal cleanup. Delete a value only if you added it and know it belongs to this experiment. The Feature Management override key may contain unrelated experiments. Do not delete the entire Overrides key.

The safest rollback is a registry backup made before the change or System Restore, where available. After restoring the defaults, restart Windows and verify the active driver and storage utilities.

Safer alternatives

  1. Stay with stornvme.sys. This is the supported Windows path and avoids undocumented feature overrides.
  2. Update firmware and software. Check motherboard firmware, SSD firmware, chipset drivers, and Windows updates when troubleshooting freezes or poor performance.
  3. Measure the actual problem. Record temperatures, firmware, driver, queue depth, workload, and power settings before changing the storage stack.
  4. Use a vendor driver only when officially supplied. Do not install a random storage driver or force one intended for a different platform.
  5. Investigate the complete platform. Sustained-write problems may involve the SSD, controller, PCIe link, thermals, firmware, or motherboard rather than the Windows driver alone.

A Microsoft Q&A report described an individual user’s observations of different sustained-write behavior between stornvme.sys and nvmedisk.sys on PCIe Gen5 drives. That is a user report, not a controlled Microsoft investigation or a guarantee that changing drivers will solve similar problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens next?

The Insider change does not reveal Microsoft’s product plans. Microsoft could redesign the implementation, enable a supported client path in a future release, leave it limited to server products, or remove it entirely. None of those outcomes can be inferred with confidence from the current registry behavior.

For now, the reliable conclusion is narrower: the old community workaround is unstable across Insider builds, the replacement feature ID is not officially documented, and the standard Windows NVMe driver remains available.
