Microsoft began rolling out Microsoft Account notifications in the Windows 10 version 22H2 Release Preview build announced on April 15, 2024. The prompts could appear in Settings and the Start menu, but this was a staged Insider rollout—not a requirement for every Windows 10 user to switch to a Microsoft Account.
What was released, and when?
Microsoft announced Windows 10 version 22H2 build 19045.4353 for the Release Preview Channel on April 15, 2024. The update was associated with KB5036979. Release Preview is an Insider testing channel, so this was not a stable update delivered to every Windows 10 PC that day. Microsoft said the account-notification feature was starting to roll out, which means its arrival could vary between devices.
Microsoft later documented KB5036979 as preview build 19045.4355 in an April 23, 2024 support entry. The different build numbers reflect the later preview revision associated with the same KB, not evidence that the April 15 announcement named 19045.4355. What were the Microsoft Account notifications?
Microsoft described them as account-related notifications intended to encourage people to connect Windows with a Microsoft Account. The company cited access to Microsoft apps, data backup, subscription management and additional account-security steps as reasons to use an account.

The announcement described prompts and recommendations; it did not announce a universal rule requiring local-account users to convert their Windows sign-in. Signing in to Windows with a local account is also distinct from signing in separately to an app or service such as OneDrive.
Where could the prompts appear?
Microsoft said notifications could begin in Settings > Home and appear across Settings and the Start menu. It did not promise that every device would show the same prompt or design. Placement and wording could vary with the device’s build and whether the rollout had reached it.

How to manage the notifications
Microsoft pointed users to Settings > Privacy & security > General to manage Settings notifications. On some Windows 10 installations, the page may instead be labeled Settings > Privacy > General. Settings names can also differ on later builds.

- Open the privacy settings page and select General.
- Review the controls for Windows suggestions, personalized experiences and Settings notifications, then turn off only the category you do not want.
If those labels are absent, search Settings for notifications, suggestions or Microsoft Account. Microsoft’s guidance concerns Settings notifications; it does not establish that one switch disables every account-related message. Start-menu recommendations, OneDrive or Windows Backup prompts, and security notices can have separate controls or come from different apps. On a work- or school-managed PC, an administrator may control these settings.

How to check whether your PC had this build
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Check the Windows version and OS build shown in the dialog.
You can also open Settings > System > About and review Windows specifications. A later build number does not by itself show whether the original rollout appeared on your device; cumulative updates replace earlier builds over time. Microsoft lists 19045.4353 in its older Windows Insider preview build records.
Why might a prompt appear on another build—or not appear at all?
- The rollout had not reached the PC: Microsoft described a rollout, not simultaneous availability for every tester.
- The PC is on a different revision: Newer cumulative updates replace older OS builds.
- The message comes from an app: OneDrive, Microsoft 365 or Windows Backup can show their own account or backup prompts.
- The device is managed: Organizational policies can change or restrict what a user can see and control.
- The Settings interface differs: Windows version, edition and language can affect page names and controls.
If a prompt asks for credentials and you are unsure whether it is genuine, open Windows Settings directly rather than following an unexpected email link or entering credentials into an unfamiliar page.

What else was in the preview build?
The account-notification rollout was one item in a broader update. Microsoft’s announcement also listed fixes involving a possible 0x9F DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE stop error after Modern Standby, a multiboot startup race, memory allocation and leaks, Bluetooth stability for some wireless earbuds, Windows LAPS timing, Windows Search reliability, and other system components. Those changes were part of the preview build’s wider changelog; they do not alter what the account notifications meant.
What this means for Windows 10 users now
Build 19045.4353 is a 2024 Insider release, not a current Windows 10 feature rollout. Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of standard support for Windows 10 version 22H2 Home and Pro. Windows 10 PCs continue to run after support ends, but ordinary free security and feature updates and technical assistance are no longer provided.
