The headline “New Microsoft 365 features include PWA support and more” refers to a roundup published on July 8, 2024—not a current list of new features. Its most useful Teams changes included automatic hiding of inactive channels, a Files tab renamed Shared, and new notification and channel-management options. But the PWA claim needs qualification: Microsoft’s documented change concerned Teams Website tabs opening links in a browser, not a general launch of PWA support across Microsoft 365.
For administrators revisiting that roundup in 2026, the key is to distinguish announced changes from features with specific rollout dates, license requirements, or narrower scopes.
What the July 2024 roundup covered
The original July 8, 2024 roundup grouped together changes across Teams, Outlook, Office apps, Intune, Copilot, and Microsoft 365 administration. It mixed features at different stages—available, preview, or planned rollout—so its list should be read as a snapshot of announcements, not as a promise that every feature reached every tenant.

Other updates were more specialized, license-dependent, or administrator-facing.
Teams: channel cleanup, Shared, and better navigation
Inactive channels could be hidden, not deleted
Microsoft announced that Teams would identify channels a user had not interacted with for 45 days and hide them from that user’s channel list. Users could review hidden channels, restore ones they wanted to keep visible, and opt out of automatic hiding. Hiding is not deletion; it is a way to reduce sidebar clutter.
The rollout was first described as a Q3 2024 plan. A later roadmap notice put targeted release in mid-July 2024 and worldwide general availability between mid-November 2024 and mid-January 2025. That notice also said users with EDU licenses would not receive the change. These dates explain the rollout history; they do not establish the setting or behavior for every tenant in 2026. Microsoft described the rule in terms of user interaction but did not define every action that resets the inactivity period. In particular, do not assume that simply opening files or relying on a channel for occasional announcements will necessarily keep it visible. Community members raised questions about file activity, but those reports are not a definitive statement of Microsoft’s detection logic.
This creates a practical risk: a channel can be important even if a person rarely posts in it. Policy and announcement channels, incident-support channels, records or compliance spaces, and seasonal project channels may all be low-traffic by design. Tell users how to find and restore hidden channels, and do not rely on a channel’s position in the sidebar as the only way to deliver urgent or compliance-related information. Turning off future automatic hiding should not be assumed to restore channels already hidden; review and restore those separately.
Files became Shared in the relevant Teams conversation view
The Teams Files tab was renamed Shared in the experience covered by the roundup. The label emphasizes that the area contains files and links shared in a chat or channel. People following older internal instructions may still see references to “Files,” so documentation and screenshots may need updating. The change is a Teams interface label, not a renaming of every file area in Microsoft 365.
More channel-management options
Microsoft’s broader channel announcement covered more than automatic hiding. It also described channel cards, channel discovery and a Discover feed, channel archiving, sharing links to channels, posts, and replies, and changes to channel types and the General channel. The announcement included a limit of 1,000 channels per team; administrators should check current product guidance and their own tenant context rather than treating an announcement-era limit as a universal planning guarantee.
Archiving is different from hiding. Hiding changes what an individual sees; archiving is a deliberate lifecycle action for a completed channel. Microsoft described archived channels as preserving messages, files, and tabs while removing the channel from the active list. Ordinary new conversations are not added until the channel is restored. Use archiving for completed work, not as a substitute for teaching users how to recover a channel hidden from their personal view.
Notification controls
The roundup also called out more granular notification choices, including controls associated with posts and notification sounds. These can help reduce alert fatigue in busy teams, but they require users to make intentional choices: muting too much can make it easier to miss work that matters. Organizations should explain which channels or messages require prompt attention and avoid relying on default notification behavior as an escalation policy.

The PWA claim: what Microsoft actually documented
A progressive web app (PWA) is a web application that can be installed or launched in an app-like way through a browser. That is not the same thing as a Teams Website tab, and Microsoft’s directly documented July 2024 change was about Website tabs—not a blanket statement that Microsoft 365 gained PWA support.
- Website tab: A URL someone pins in a Teams chat or channel. Microsoft said these links would open in a separate browser tab rather than load inside the new Teams client. Existing Website tabs were to be migrated to this behavior.
- Teams tab app: An app built for the Teams platform, such as Planner or a SharePoint page. Microsoft said these proper tab apps would continue to work; they are not equivalent to a manually pinned website.
- PWA: A browser-installed web application. The Website-tab announcement does not establish which Microsoft 365 apps can be installed as PWAs, which browsers or operating systems support them, or whether a PWA replaces the desktop Teams client.
Microsoft cited evolving browser security and privacy standards for the Website-tab change. Opening a site externally can improve compatibility with pages that block embedding, but it means users may switch context and may encounter separate sign-in behavior. For content that needs to stay integrated in Teams, prefer a supported Teams app or a custom Teams tab app rather than relying on a URL embedded as a Website tab. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Website-tab announcement.
Outlook and Office: useful changes with client and license caveats
The roundup included Outlook meeting-scheduling changes, the ability to send meeting updates only to attendees who were added or removed, and automatic account configuration on Intune-managed Windows 11 devices. Targeted updates can spare unchanged attendees unnecessary mail, while automatic setup may simplify deployment. Availability can depend on the Outlook client, update channel, device management, and tenant configuration; do not assume that every user sees the same controls.

Excel checkboxes can make lightweight trackers and checklists easier to use. Sharing-link expiration can reduce how long a link remains usable, but it does not replace reviewing permissions, applying appropriate sensitivity labels, or following retention requirements. A link’s expiration is one access-control measure, not a complete data-governance policy.

Administrator-facing items included TPM-based device attestation, shorter policy-refresh intervals for certain Intune settings, simplified DKIM setup, partner-to-partner transfers of New Commerce subscriptions, Microsoft Entra PowerShell capabilities, and a preview of Conditional Access token protection.
One reported Intune change concerned refresh intervals as short as 30 minutes for certain settings. That is not a guarantee that every policy, device, or setting refreshes on a 30-minute schedule. Validate the applicable setting and device prerequisites before promising a timing change to users. TPM-based attestation also depends on supported hardware and configuration.

DKIM helps authenticate mail from a domain; simplified setup is useful, but administrators still need to verify the domain’s configuration and authentication status. Conditional Access token protection was described as a preview, so do not treat it as generally available or build a production security promise around it without confirming current Microsoft documentation and tenant eligibility. These changes belong in a separate admin review, not in a general user feature announcement.

Copilot: several products and dependencies, not one feature
The roundup grouped together Copilot catch-up functionality, broader plan availability, better handling of file links in Teams, improved answers to time-based questions, PDF-to-PowerPoint creation, and Recall privacy changes on Copilot+ PCs. These do not all belong to the same product: Microsoft 365 Copilot, Windows Copilot-related experiences, and Copilot+ PC features are distinct. Teams Premium is also a separate offering, not another name for Copilot.
Copilot’s practical value depends on the exact license, app, tenant settings, data permissions, and rollout status. Generated summaries, answers, and presentations should be checked for accuracy before they are shared or used to make decisions. Organizations should also assess permissions and data governance before expanding AI access; a productivity feature does not remove the need to control who can see source content.
Administrator checklist
- Check the current Teams settings and user experience for automatic hiding; explain how users find and restore hidden channels.
- Identify low-frequency channels that carry announcements, incident guidance, compliance records, or seasonal work, and provide a reliable way for users to find them.
- Update relevant Teams instructions from “Files” to “Shared,” while noting that labels can vary by client or rollout.
- Audit Website tabs. Replace important embedded links with supported Teams apps or custom tabs where an integrated experience is needed.
- Confirm whether Teams Premium reporting, including the ROI report mentioned in the 2024 roundup, is available under the organization’s current licensing and admin experience before planning around it.
- For Intune, verify device and policy prerequisites; do not generalize a refresh interval for certain settings to all policies.
- Review DKIM and domain authentication, and treat Conditional Access token protection as preview unless current Microsoft documentation confirms its status for your tenant.
- Communicate Copilot licensing, data permissions, and review expectations separately from ordinary Microsoft 365 interface changes.
What matters most
For everyday users, the Shared label, channel discovery and cleanup, and more deliberate notification choices are the most visible Teams changes. For administrators, the bigger work is preventing important low-traffic channels from being overlooked, replacing Website tabs where embedded access matters, and checking the scope and status of security or Copilot features before promising them. The PWA headline is the least reliable shorthand: the Microsoft evidence cited here supports a change to Teams Website tabs, not a general PWA launch across Microsoft 365.
