Microsoft 365’s new Copilot-inspired identity does not replace Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Teams. It is primarily a branding and app-entry-point change that places Microsoft’s AI assistant at the center of the Microsoft 365 experience.
Microsoft showed the Copilot-influenced identity during Microsoft Ignite 2024, held November 18–22, 2024. Microsoft then began rolling out the Microsoft 365 Copilot name and icon for its Microsoft 365 app on January 15, 2025.
What changed?
The most visible change is the Microsoft 365 suite’s visual identity. The design uses a Copilot-style multicolor symbol above an “M365” label, aligning the productivity suite with Microsoft’s broader Copilot branding.

That identity applies chiefly to the Microsoft 365 suite and its central app. It should not be read as a replacement for every Microsoft product icon. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, and related services remain separate applications and experiences.

Microsoft describes the renamed app as a hub for finding, creating, editing, sharing, and collaborating on files, while also providing access to Copilot features. The app is available across the web, Windows, iOS, and Android. Microsoft’s support documentation also describes the updated Microsoft 365 web experience and related redirects.

Microsoft says the new name and icon reflect Copilot’s integration into the app; they do not represent a requirement to reinstall Office or purchase a new copy of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
What the Copilot design communicates
Visually, the change moves Microsoft 365 away from looking like a simple collection of Office applications and toward a connected platform with an AI assistant at its center. The multicolor treatment and Copilot symbol create consistency with Microsoft’s wider AI branding, while the smaller “M365” label identifies the productivity suite.
The broader strategic interpretation is clear: Microsoft wants people to think of Microsoft 365 not only as software for writing documents, building spreadsheets, and making presentations, but also as a place to ask questions, find information, create content, and act on work data.
However, the precise meaning of every color, curve, or geometric element should not be overstated. The verifiable point is the visual alignment with Copilot and the “M365” identifier, not an official explanation for each design detail.
Why Microsoft is putting Copilot at the center
Microsoft 365 already contains the applications where many employees write, calculate, present, communicate, meet, and store files. Copilot gives Microsoft a way to connect those activities through a common AI interaction layer.
Microsoft describes Microsoft 365 Copilot as an AI assistant integrated with Microsoft 365 applications and Microsoft Graph. Depending on the user’s permissions and the products enabled in an organization, Copilot can work with relevant emails, files, meetings, chats, and other work context. Microsoft says Copilot operates within the user’s existing permissions; it is not supposed to grant access to information the user is not authorized to see.

What Copilot can do across Microsoft 365
- Word: Draft, rewrite, summarize, transform, and refine documents.
- Excel: Ask questions about data, generate or explain formulas, identify patterns, and assist with analysis.
- PowerPoint: Create presentation drafts from prompts or source documents and help structure slides.
- Outlook: Summarize email threads and help draft replies.
- Teams: Recap meetings and surface follow-up information.
- SharePoint: Support newer site- and file-grounded agent experiences.
At Ignite 2024, Microsoft also announced Copilot Actions and SharePoint agents, presenting Copilot as an automation and organizational-knowledge layer rather than only a chat window. The actual features available to a user depend on licensing, account type, administrator settings, application, platform, and region.
Does the new logo replace Microsoft Office?
No. The branding change does not discontinue Office applications. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and other Microsoft 365 services remain available.
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is better understood as a central launcher and workspace. Users can still open individual applications directly, use their existing files, and continue established workflows. The renamed app may make Copilot more prominent, but the presence of the Copilot icon does not convert every Microsoft 365 app into the same product.
Does everyone get Copilot?
No. The logo and app name do not prove that an account has access to every Copilot capability.

Microsoft’s current support guidance is the appropriate reference for account-specific availability. Features can also differ between desktop, web, and mobile versions.
Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Copilot Studio are not the same thing
Microsoft’s naming can be confusing:
- Microsoft Copilot: Microsoft’s general AI assistant experience.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot: The work-focused Copilot experience integrated with Microsoft 365 applications and organizational context.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat: A chat experience whose availability depends on account, plan, region, and administrator configuration.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot app: The renamed Microsoft 365 productivity hub.
- Copilot Studio: Microsoft’s environment for customizing Copilot and building agents that can connect to business data and systems.
These labels should not be treated as interchangeable. Seeing one Copilot-branded icon does not mean that all of these products or entitlements are included.
What existing users should expect
- A different app name and icon.
- More prominent Copilot navigation and creation options.
- Microsoft 365 web destinations and redirects associated with the unified cloud experience.
- No need to reinstall Office solely because the icon changed.
- No automatic entitlement to every Copilot feature.
- Different behavior depending on account type, subscription, geography, and administrator settings.
If the updated branding does not appear, Microsoft advises connecting the device to the internet and restarting the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. A delayed icon or name change is not, by itself, evidence that the account is missing Office.

For organizations, the important question is not whether the Copilot icon appears. It is whether the company’s data, permissions, policies, and workforce are ready for AI-assisted work.

Permissions and data quality
Copilot can only provide useful, grounded results from information it can access. Poorly organized SharePoint sites, excessive sharing permissions, outdated files, and inconsistent naming can reduce answer quality or make sensitive information easier for an authorized user to discover. Existing permissions remain critical because Copilot works within them.
Security and compliance
Organizations should review retention policies, sensitivity labels, audit requirements, regulated data handling, and administrator controls before expanding deployment. Copilot should not be treated as a substitute for information governance.
Training and review
Employees need practical guidance on prompting, checking citations and source material, correcting errors, protecting confidential information, and deciding when human review is mandatory. Copilot-generated text, summaries, formulas, and presentations still require judgment.

Measurement
Companies should measure useful outcomes such as time saved, adoption by role, output quality, correction rates, and risk events. The appearance of a new icon is not a productivity metric.
Microsoft reported on November 19, 2024, that nearly 70% of Fortune 500 companies were using Microsoft 365 Copilot. That is a Microsoft-reported adoption figure, not an independently audited market statistic.

In the narrow sense, it is cosmetic: changing the icon does not make Copilot more accurate or automatically add a license. It can also create confusion because Microsoft 365, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Copilot Chat have overlapping names.
Strategically, though, the redesign matters. It makes Copilot more visible at the point where users already open files and applications, reinforces Microsoft’s AI-first direction, and presents Microsoft 365 as an integrated work platform rather than simply a bundle of Office programs.

Should you change your Microsoft 365 subscription?
Do not buy or upgrade solely because the logo changed. The relevant question is whether the available Copilot features fit your workflow and whether you are comfortable with the subscription and data-governance implications.
- Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot when you need AI integrated with Microsoft files, email, meetings, and collaboration tools and your organization can manage permissions and training.
- Consider Copilot Studio when you need custom agents, business-system connections, or organization-specific workflows—not merely document drafting.
- Consider Google Workspace with Gemini if your organization already works primarily in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and Drive.
- Consider ChatGPT Business or Enterprise or Claude for Work when you want a separate, general-purpose AI workspace rather than deep Microsoft 365 integration.
- Consider Office Home 2024 or another non-subscription option if you only need classic desktop Office applications and do not want recurring billing or integrated AI features.
The logo is a signal of Microsoft’s direction, not a purchasing reason by itself.
