If the Office installer stays on “We’re getting things ready”, the message is a setup status—not a specific error code. Give it a little time if network or disk activity continues, but if it remains unchanged with no apparent activity, restart Windows and work through the fixes below. Start with the offline installer if the regular web installer keeps hanging.
Many people still search for “Office 365”; Microsoft now uses the Microsoft 365 name for its subscription service. These steps are for Windows PCs installing or repairing Microsoft 365 or supported Office versions. If the message appears while opening Outlook or setting up an Outlook account, rather than during Office installation, these may not be the right fixes.
Before you troubleshoot
First identify what is happening: a fresh installation, an update or repair, or an attempt to open an Office app. Also note whether this is a personal PC or a work- or school-managed device. The steps differ for macOS, and an administrator may control software installation on a managed Windows computer.
Microsoft does not give a universal time limit for this screen. Wait several minutes if the computer is still downloading or showing disk activity. If the screen has not changed for an extended period and there is no visible activity, treat it as potentially stuck. Avoid repeatedly opening OfficeSetup.exe; multiple installers can compete with each other.

1. Restart Windows and check whether Office installed
- Close the installer if it responds, then restart the PC.
- Open Start and search for Word, Excel, or Microsoft 365.
- If an app opens, sign in with the Microsoft account or work/school account associated with your license. If the app is missing or will not open, continue below.
An installation can sometimes finish even when the installer appears to hang. Microsoft recommends checking for Office after restarting. Microsoft’s guidance for an Office installation that takes a long time covers this and the steps that follow.
2. Retry on a stable connection
The standard installer downloads components as setup proceeds, so an unreliable connection or network filter can interrupt it.
- Temporarily disconnect from a VPN and retry.
- Use Ethernet if available. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or try a different reliable network.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi that requires you to sign in through a browser.
- On a work or school network, ask IT whether installation traffic is restricted; do not try to bypass organizational controls.
3. Use Microsoft’s offline installer
If the web installer repeatedly hangs, use the offline installer. It still needs an internet connection to download the installation files, but after that download the Office setup can run without continuously fetching the package. Microsoft says this option can help with unreliable connections and proxy, firewall, or antivirus interference.

- Sign in to the Microsoft account portal tied to your purchase or subscription, or use the appropriate work/school installation portal.
- Choose Install apps or the equivalent, then look for Other options, Language and install options, or Choose a version. Labels vary by account and plan.
- Select Offline installer, then choose the language and architecture.
- Download the package, open the downloaded virtual drive or installation package, and run
Setup32.exeorSetup64.exe. - When setup finishes, restart Windows and open an Office app to sign in or activate.
Follow Microsoft’s offline-installer instructions for the options shown for your product. For a reinstall, choose the same architecture as the existing Office installation. Otherwise, 64-bit suits most modern PCs; choose 32-bit if an older add-in, ActiveX control, VBA dependency, or other compatibility need requires it. Do not install both architectures together.

4. Temporarily test security or network filtering
A VPN, proxy, third-party firewall, endpoint protection, or application-control policy can interfere with setup. Microsoft lists temporarily testing antivirus as a troubleshooting step, but treat it as a brief diagnostic—not a permanent change:
- Only test with an installer downloaded from Microsoft’s official account or support site.
- Temporarily disable the relevant protection only if you can do so safely, run the installer, then immediately re-enable it.
- Do not uninstall antivirus software just to install Office or leave Windows Defender, the firewall, or other protection disabled.
- If setup works only while protection is off, ask the security-product vendor or your IT administrator about an appropriate allow-list rule.
5. Run Online Repair if Office is already installed
If Office appears in the installed-program list, repair it before removing it. Close Office apps, then:
- Press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Select Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office product, then select Change.
- Choose Online Repair and follow the prompts. Restart when it finishes.
Quick Repair is faster and uses locally available files where possible. Online Repair is more comprehensive, needs internet access, and may reinstall Office components, so it is the stronger choice for a persistent installation or repair problem.

If Windows reports that another installation is in progress, restart first and do not launch another installer. If the problem remains, you can check Task Manager as a limited diagnostic; ending a Click-to-Run process is community-suggested guidance, not a primary Microsoft repair procedure.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Look for an Office setup or Click-to-Run process. Do not stop a process if Office is visibly updating, repairing, or installing.
- If setup is clearly frozen and no progress is occurring, select the relevant process and choose End task. Restart Windows before trying setup again.
Do not delete Click-to-Run folders or other Office directories manually; that can leave installation, service, or licensing components behind.
7. Remove a damaged installation and reinstall
Consider a clean removal if repair fails, Office apps will not open, setup loops back to the same screen, a prior installation was interrupted, or multiple Office versions or installation types are involved. Save your work, close Office apps, and back up any unsaved local files first.
- Use Microsoft’s official uninstall instructions and troubleshooter for the detected Office version and installation type.
- Run the troubleshooter on the same PC and restart when prompted. Microsoft says its troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and supports removal of Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016; Microsoft currently notes that it may not uninstall Office 2024 in some cases.
- After restarting, reinstall from the account associated with your license. If the web installer hangs again, use the offline installer.
Uninstalling the Office applications does not delete documents and workbooks you created with them, according to Microsoft. However, repair or reinstallation can affect settings, add-ins, sign-ins, or cached profiles. Record any add-ins or setup details you need before a full removal.
Check the account, product, and Windows version
A successful installation does not by itself confirm that the account has a license. If Office installs but asks for activation or does not show the expected subscription, sign in with the account that owns the purchase or was assigned the work/school license. If the product is missing from the account portal, contact the account owner or administrator rather than buying another license as a troubleshooting step.

Microsoft 365 subscription apps and one-time-purchase Office 2024 are different products, and older Office releases can have different support and installation behavior. Check Microsoft’s supported-products information for current status; for example, Microsoft lists Office 2024 support through October 9, 2029, and Office 2021 support through October 13, 2026. These dates apply to those product editions and can change in official support documentation.
If you use the Microsoft Store edition, an MSI installation, or another Office deployment type, repair and removal options may differ from Click-to-Run. Identify the installed type before using removal instructions. On a Mac, do not use the Windows Control Panel or Task Manager steps; follow Microsoft’s Office for Mac uninstall and reinstall guidance instead.
What not to do
- Do not edit the Registry based on generic videos or forum posts. There is no established universal Registry fix for this status message.
- Do not manually delete Office or Click-to-Run folders. Use Microsoft’s documented repair or removal process.
- Do not keep launching fresh copies of the web installer. If the same network path or damaged local state is the problem, repeating it may not help; use the offline installer or repair path.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection or buy a new license just to address a local installation failure.
When to contact Microsoft or your administrator
Stop repeating local fixes and get help if both online and offline installation fail, setup produces a specific error code, your account does not show the product, Windows is unsupported, or Office still fails after official removal. On a managed PC, contact IT rather than bypassing policy. Include the product name, Windows version, whether the device is managed, when setup stopped, any error code, and whether the offline installer also failed. Microsoft’s Office installation troubleshooting page provides additional product-specific paths.
If you need to work while resolving the desktop installation, Office for the web may provide basic browser-based Word, Excel, or PowerPoint access. It is not a full replacement for desktop features such as some add-ins, macros, offline use, or advanced capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close the “We’re getting things ready” installer?
If the window responds and setup has no visible activity for an extended period, close it and restart Windows before retrying. First check Start for Word or Excel, since Office may have installed despite the stalled-looking screen.
Will uninstalling Office delete my documents?
Microsoft says removing the Office applications does not delete documents and workbooks you created with them. Still save and back up unsaved local work before repair or removal.
Does the offline installer work without internet?
You need internet to download the offline package. Once downloaded, the installation can proceed without continuously downloading Office components.
