Yes—the Crucial MX500 series has been phased out. An Advantech phase-out notice dated July 12, 2024 lists discontinued MX500 channel parts, with an end-of-life date of June 17, 2024 and a last-time-buy date of August 30, 2024. Micron later announced that it was leaving the entire Crucial consumer business, with consumer shipments continuing only through February 2026. Those milestones describe production and channel shipments, not a guaranteed sell-out of every retailer’s remaining inventory.
What happened to the Crucial MX500?
The MX500’s model-specific manufacturing phase-out was recorded in Advantech’s July 12, 2024 announcement. The notice covers listed 500GB, 1TB and 2TB channel parts and gives June 17, 2024 as the stated end-of-life date. It gives August 30, 2024 as the last-time-buy date for those parts.
That announcement is separate from Micron’s December 3, 2025 decision to exit the Crucial consumer business altogether. Micron said Crucial consumer shipments would continue through the end of fiscal Q2 2026—February 2026—before ending. The broader decision includes products beyond the MX500.
Key dates and what they mean
| Date | Event | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| June 17, 2024 | MX500 EOL date listed by Advantech | Production was discontinued for the listed channel parts; it is not a worldwide retail sell-out date. |
| July 12, 2024 | Advantech phase-out notice published | Documents the MX500 phase-out and identifies the affected 500GB, 1TB and 2TB channel products. |
| August 30, 2024 | Last-time-buy date | Marks a purchasing deadline for that channel, not proof that all shop inventory ended. |
| December 3, 2025 | Micron announces its Crucial consumer-business exit | Applies to the entire Crucial consumer line, not just MX500. |
| February 2026 | End of the consumer-shipment period Micron announced | New shipments to consumer channels were scheduled to end; existing retailer or distributor stock could remain. |
| September 28, 2026 | Current position covered by these announcements | Both announced dates have passed. They do not prove whether a particular seller still has a genuine MX500 unit. |
Can you still buy a Crucial MX500?
Possibly, but only as remaining inventory. The announcements do not establish current stock at any retailer, distributor or marketplace. A listing may represent old inventory, a third-party seller, a different capacity, or an incorrectly identified drive.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.5-inch Solid State Drive
- 500GB
Before ordering, check the exact part number, capacity, seller, condition and return policy. For the 500GB model, the product flyer lists part number CT500MX500SSD1. Treat unusually low prices, missing photographs, opened packaging and vague “MX500-compatible” descriptions as reasons to verify further. Availability and seller status can change independently of the discontinued-production dates.
Make sure the drive fits your computer
The MX500 is a conventional 2.5-inch, 7mm SATA 6Gb/s SSD. It is not an M.2 NVMe drive. A purchase makes sense only when the computer, enclosure or console has a 2.5-inch SATA bay and the required SATA data and power connections (or a compatible adapter).
Rank #2
- 2.5-inch Solid State Drive
- 2TB
- Measure or identify the existing drive and confirm a 2.5-inch bay.
- Check whether the host uses SATA rather than an M.2-only slot.
- Confirm the thickness clearance; the MX500 is 7mm.
- Match the capacity and exact part number shown by the seller with the label and packaging.
MX500 specifications that remain relevant
Crucial’s product flyer lists 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. For the listed 500GB and 1TB versions, it states sequential read performance of up to 560 MB/s and sequential write performance of up to 510 MB/s. These are manufacturer-published maximum specifications, not independent test results and not a guarantee of a particular system’s speed.
The same flyer states a limited five-year warranty. Warranty duration and remedies for an individual buyer depend on the applicable regional terms, purchase documentation and claim circumstances.

Warranty, firmware and support after the phase-out
Micron’s December 2025 announcement said it would continue warranty service and product support for Crucial products during the transition out of the consumer business. That is a general support commitment, not a promise of replacement stock, a cash refund or a particular RMA outcome.
If you already own an MX500, keep your proof of purchase and record the drive’s serial number. Use Crucial’s official support channels for firmware, product documentation and warranty instructions, and check the terms that apply in your country. Do not assume that the end of manufacturing cancels an otherwise valid warranty, or that every claim will be handled identically across regions.

What to choose if the MX500 is unavailable
For a replacement, start with the interface and physical format rather than the brand name. A suitable substitute must be a 2.5-inch SATA SSD if that is what the computer supports; an M.2 NVMe model is not interchangeable merely because it is also an SSD.
Compare candidate drives on these points:
- 2.5-inch form factor, 7mm clearance and SATA compatibility
- Capacity appropriate for the operating system and data
- Warranty length, exclusions and proof-of-purchase rules
- Seller reputation, new-versus-used condition and return window
- Actual stock and price at the time of purchase
No single competing model is established here as a verified equivalent. Check the alternative manufacturer’s current specifications and support policy before buying.

Bottom line for owners and buyers
The MX500 is a discontinued SATA SSD series, and Micron’s wider Crucial consumer-business exit means new consumer-channel shipments ended after February 2026. A remaining unit may still be legitimate, but it is leftover stock rather than current production. Verify the part number, 2.5-inch SATA fit, seller and warranty terms before paying, and use official Crucial support for any existing-drive claim.
