The most useful website-monitoring alert programs combine six signals: availability, response-time components, page and transaction performance, certificate and domain health, content correctness, and the integrity of links and resources. Add synthetic checks for critical user journeys and real-user monitoring (RUM) for browser conditions. Page only after a sustained or multi-location failure, and send enough diagnostic context that the recipient can act immediately.
Start with the signals that represent user impact
A green server process does not prove that visitors can use a site. A monitor should test both transport-level behavior and the result a visitor receives. The following metrics form a practical baseline.
Availability and uptime
Check each public HTTP and HTTPS endpoint at a defined interval. Validate the status code against an expected range or exact value, then inspect the response body for a required marker. A server that returns an HTTP 200 page containing an error message, maintenance notice, or empty application shell is not available for your users.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHTTPS checks should also validate the certificate chain. Google Cloud’s uptime-check model treats a check as successful only when the configured HTTP status and required response data are present. Its checks expose a time_until_ssl_cert_expires value, and its default notification condition waits for failures reported by at least two regions for at least one minute.

Response time and latency components
Record total elapsed time and retain the individual phases when your platform exposes them:
- DNS resolution time
- TCP connection time
- TLS handshake time
- Time to first byte (TTFB)
- Download time or time to last byte
Microsoft defines cumulative response time as DNS_RESOLUTION_TIME + TCP_CONNECT_TIME + TIME_TO_LAST_BYTE. Tracking the components tells you whether a slowdown comes from DNS, network setup, server processing, or payload delivery. Keep a history rather than a single average so you can see regional and time-of-day patterns.
Page-load and transaction performance
A reachable page can still be unusably slow. Monitor page-load time for representative pages and measure the slowest important transactions, not just the home page. For WordPress sites, slow-log data can reveal expensive queries, plugins, external requests, or functions that an HTTP probe cannot explain.
Use separate warning and paging limits. Set them from your normal baseline and service objectives; there is no universal latency number that fits every site. A warning can open an investigation, while a sustained breach on a revenue-producing transaction can wake the on-call engineer.
TLS certificates and domain registration
Certificate monitoring should detect expiration, an untrusted or self-signed certificate, hostname mismatch, and validation-chain failures. Alert well before expiry so there is time to renew, deploy, and verify the replacement. Domain-registration expiry is a separate check: a valid certificate cannot help if the domain itself lapses. Keep the two dates in separate monitors and run them from more than one location.
Content and keyword correctness
Require a known phrase, JSON field, heading, or other marker in the response. Keyword assertions catch a proxy serving the wrong tenant, a deployment returning a generic error page with status 200, or an authentication redirect where public content was expected. Authenticated endpoints may require custom headers or cookies; store those secrets in the monitoring platform’s protected configuration.

Broken links and missing resources
Crawl important pages for dead links and failed elements. Missing images, JavaScript bundles, CSS files, fonts, or API calls can break a page even when its initial HTML request succeeds. Treat a broken resource on a checkout or login page more seriously than an obsolete link in a low-traffic article, and include the referring page and failed URL in the alert.
Forms, checkout, APIs, and scripted journeys
Synthetic transactions should perform the actions that matter to the business: sign in, submit a form, add an item to a cart, complete a checkout step, or call an API and validate its response. A browser journey can catch client-side JavaScript errors, redirect loops, and third-party failures that a simple uptime probe misses. Use test accounts and non-production payment methods, and remove or reset created records so the check is safe to repeat.
Real-user experience
Synthetic probes are controlled and repeatable; RUM records what real browsers and locations experienced. Use both when possible. Synthetic data gives an early, comparable signal, while RUM reveals device, network, geography, and browser problems that probes may not reproduce. Profiling slow functions, database queries, and external requests helps connect a RUM symptom to a server-side cause.
Design alerts that avoid false positives
Require persistence and independent confirmation
Do not page on one failed request unless the check protects a safety-critical operation. Require consecutive failures or a failure duration when the monitor supports it. For public services, use multiple probe regions so a transient route or DNS problem does not look like a global outage. A practical policy is to investigate after one failed run, notify a service channel after repeated failures, and page after the configured duration or multi-region condition is met.
Separate warning from paging thresholds
Use warning thresholds for degradation and paging thresholds for sustained user impact. For example, a latency warning can create a ticket when the rolling value exceeds your baseline, while a repeated error-rate breach or failed checkout pages the on-call team. Revisit limits after releases and seasonal traffic changes rather than copying a number from another service.
Pause planned work and assign ownership
Maintenance windows should suppress expected failures without hiding unrelated incidents. Every alert needs an owner, escalation path, and stated out-of-hours expectation. GOV.UK guidance emphasizes user impact and whether an issue requires an out-of-hours response; use that principle to decide which warnings remain business-hours notifications and which become pages.

Put diagnostic context in the notification
A useful notification includes the URL and check name, probe region, timestamp, status code, total latency and phase timings, certificate days remaining, failed content assertion, and a link to the runbook. Include the first observed time and the most recent successful time so the responder can judge whether the problem is new, intermittent, or already recovering.
| Signal | Example condition | First responder action |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Expected status or body marker fails from multiple regions for the configured duration | Open the endpoint, inspect deployment and origin health, then compare regions |
| Latency | Rolling response time exceeds the service baseline; page only when sustained | Check DNS, TCP, TLS, TTFB, database, and upstream dependencies |
| TLS | Certificate validation fails or days remaining enter the renewal window | Verify hostname, chain, renewal job, and edge deployment |
| Content | Required text or JSON field is absent | Check redirects, authentication, deployment output, and cache contents |
| Resources | Critical script, stylesheet, image, or API request returns an error | Inspect the referring page, asset release, CDN, and permissions |
| Transaction | Login, form, checkout, or API assertion fails repeatedly | Reproduce with the test account and follow the journey runbook |
A practical implementation sequence
- Inventory user-critical surfaces. List home, login, search, forms, checkout, APIs, DNS names, certificates, and high-value content. Classify each as page, resource, API, or transaction and assign an owner.
- Establish a baseline. Collect at least several days of status, latency phases, page-load timing, and transaction success. Record normal regional differences and known traffic peaks.
- Choose check frequency and timeout. Short intervals provide faster detection but create more load and notification noise. Set a timeout above normal completion time while still below the point at which users abandon the request.
- Configure assertions. Specify expected status codes, body markers, headers, JSON fields, certificate validation, and (for transactions) each step’s success condition. Never treat a status code alone as proof of correctness.
- Add persistence and locations. Require consecutive failures or a duration, and use independent regions for public endpoints. Keep a faster warning path for investigation if your team can absorb it.
- Route and enrich alerts. Send warnings to a service channel and pages to the on-call route. Attach runbook links, ownership, region, timings, and the exact failed assertion.
- Exercise the failure path. In a controlled window, return an invalid status, remove a test marker, and expire a test certificate. Confirm that each alert fires once, deduplicates repeats, and resolves automatically.
- Review after incidents and releases. Tune thresholds from observed false positives, add checks for newly critical journeys, and pause or update monitors when URLs, authentication, or ownership changes.
How to compare monitoring services
Compare capabilities rather than marketing labels. The important axes are:
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Check types | Does it support HTTP/HTTPS, DNS, TCP, ping, APIs, browser journeys, cron, and resource crawling? |
| Probe geography | Which regions can run checks, and can an alert require agreement from several? |
| Timing data | Are DNS, TCP, TLS, TTFB, download, and historical percentiles retained? |
| Assertions | Can checks validate status, text, headers, JSON, cookies, and authenticated requests? |
| Expiry checks | Are certificate and domain-registration dates monitored independently? |
| Browser depth | Can it execute forms, login, checkout, JavaScript, and API assertions safely? |
| Alert controls | Are consecutive failures, duration, maintenance windows, deduplication, and escalation available? |
| Operations | What retention, integrations, access controls, and data-residency choices are provided? |
Google Cloud Monitoring, DigitalOcean Uptime, Oh Dear, SiteGuardian, CrawlPanel, SolarWinds, and Nagios illustrate materially different combinations of these functions. Select the smallest combination that covers your critical journeys, then verify how each service handles regions, retries, authentication, and alert delivery.

A scheduler can provide a basic first layer while you evaluate a hosted service. The following examples measure status and elapsed time; production use still needs persistence, multi-location execution, secret handling, and notification delivery.
cURL
curl -fsS -o /dev/null -w 'status=%{http_code} total_seconds=%{time_total}n' https://example.com/health
Python
import time
import requests
url = 'https://example.com/health'
started = time.perf_counter()
response = requests.get(url, timeout=30)
elapsed = time.perf_counter() - started
print({'status': response.status_code, 'seconds': round(elapsed, 3)})
response.raise_for_status()
if 'healthy' not in response.text:
raise RuntimeError('required marker missing')
Node.js
const url = 'https://example.com/health';
const started = performance.now();
const res = await fetch(url, { signal: AbortSignal.timeout(30000) });
const body = await res.text();
const seconds = (performance.now() - started) / 1000;
console.log({ status: res.status, seconds: Number(seconds.toFixed(3)) });
if (!res.ok || !body.includes('healthy')) process.exit(1);
Run these from at least two networks, store results with timestamps, and let a separate alerting layer apply consecutive-failure rules. A single laptop or server cannot distinguish an origin outage from its own network failure.
Troubleshooting common alert failures
Alerts fire during brief network blips
Increase the required consecutive failures or duration, add another probe region, and inspect whether only one provider path is affected. Keep the raw failed runs for diagnosis rather than discarding them.

The monitor reports 200 but users see an error
Add a body or JSON assertion, verify redirects and authentication behavior, and check that the marker cannot appear on an error template. For dynamic pages, assert a stable element or API field instead of a volatile timestamp.
Latency is high but the origin looks healthy
Break the measurement into DNS, TCP, TLS, TTFB, and download phases. A DNS or TLS increase points toward resolver, certificate, or edge configuration; a TTFB increase points toward application, database, or upstream work; download time points toward payload size or delivery.
Certificate alerts disagree with browser results
Compare probe region, hostname, SNI, redirect target, and certificate chain. A browser may be using a cached intermediate or a different hostname than the monitor.
Browser transactions create duplicate data
Use dedicated test accounts, idempotent requests, sandbox payments, and cleanup steps. If cleanup fails, fail the check and stop before repeating the transaction.
Maintenance suppresses a real incident
Limit maintenance windows to exact monitors and times, record the change owner, and require an explicit end time. Keep unrelated certificate, DNS, and dependency checks active.

FAQ
Should every warning page the on-call engineer?
No. Page only when the condition is sustained and user impact or recovery urgency justifies out-of-hours action. Route degradations and isolated probe failures to an investigation queue.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are certificate and domain-expiry monitors interchangeable?
No. They protect different assets and can fail on different dates, so maintain separate checks and owners.
When is RUM more useful than synthetic monitoring?
RUM is more useful when device, browser, ISP, or geography differences drive the problem. Synthetic checks remain better for consistent early detection and controlled journey validation.
How often should thresholds be recalibrated?
Review them after major releases, traffic-pattern changes, and incidents. Recalibration should use your recent baseline and service objectives, not a universal industry number.
