Meta and Oakley’s “Performance AI” glasses are camera-and-audio smart glasses, not conventional augmented-reality glasses with an in-lens display. The product line began with the Oakley Meta HSTN in June 2025 and later expanded with the more rugged Oakley Meta Vanguard for high-intensity sports. Both combine Oakley frames with Meta AI, open-ear speakers, microphones, a camera and smartphone-dependent software. Vanguard adds a wraparound sports design, stronger water and dust resistance, deeper workout integrations and sports-focused capture tools.
What Meta and Oakley actually announced
The original announcement on June 20, 2025 introduced Oakley Meta HSTN as the first product in a new category Meta and Oakley call Performance AI glasses. The limited-edition HSTN was scheduled for preorder on July 11, 2025, with pricing beginning at $399 for the broader HSTN range and $499 for the limited edition. Meta’s announcement described the glasses as a sports-oriented extension of the companies’ smart-glasses partnership.
On September 17, 2025, Meta announced Oakley Meta Vanguard, a separate, more rugged model for high-intensity activities. Vanguard’s announced launch date was October 21, 2025, at $499.
That distinction matters: HSTN and Vanguard belong to the same product family, but they are not the same glasses. HSTN is the more lifestyle-oriented option, while Vanguard is designed around cycling, skiing, snowboarding, trail running and other demanding outdoor sports.

What “Performance AI” means in practice
“Performance AI” is Meta and Oakley’s category branding, not an established technical standard. The useful features behind the label are:
- Hands-free photo and video capture from a first-person viewpoint.
- Open-ear audio for music, calls, voice responses and alerts.
- Voice access to Meta AI.
- Connections to fitness services and compatible devices.
- Spoken workout information and a peripheral status light for selected metrics.
- Post-workout summaries, activity overlays and automatically captured moments.
The glasses do not independently measure every athletic metric. For example, heart-rate and workout information can come from a compatible Garmin device. The glasses provide a hands-free interface to connected data; they are not a self-contained Garmin watch, cycling computer or professional coach.
Oakley Meta Vanguard: the sports-focused model
Vanguard uses a wraparound frame intended to stay secure during more vigorous movement. Oakley and Meta list a centered 12-megapixel camera, open-ear speakers, a five-microphone array and a 122-degree wide-angle lens. Video can be recorded at up to 3K, with additional modes including slow motion, hyperlapse, adjustable stabilization and automatic action capture.

Oakley’s U.S. product page lists image acquisition at 3024×4032 pixels and video modes including 720p at 120fps and 2203×2938 at 30fps. “Up to 3K” therefore does not mean that every recording mode uses the same resolution or frame rate. These are listed specifications rather than a guarantee of action-camera-level image quality.
Meta says Vanguard’s speakers are six decibels louder than those in HSTN and are designed to remain usable in wind conditions up to 30 mph. That is a manufacturer comparison, not independent laboratory testing. Real-world intelligibility will vary with fit, wind direction, road noise, volume and hearing ability. Open-ear audio can preserve awareness of the environment, but it does not make traffic, crowds or other hazards harmless.

What Vanguard can do during a workout
With a compatible Garmin device and the required software connections, a wearer can ask Meta AI for information such as current pace, heart rate, workout status or progress toward a target. The glasses can also provide audio feedback. A status LED visible in the wearer’s peripheral vision can indicate whether the wearer is on target for a selected metric.
A realistic setup looks like this:
- Pair the glasses through the Meta AI app.
- Connect a compatible Garmin device or supported health service.
- Start the workout on the fitness device or supported app.
- Ask for available metrics using voice commands.
- Record manually or enable supported automatic capture.
- Review the activity and use supported Garmin or Strava overlays when sharing captures.
Garmin’s role is different from Strava’s. Garmin can supply compatible real-time workout data, while Strava is primarily relevant to activity sharing and metric overlays. Meta’s later product comparison also lists connections involving Apple Health and Android Health Connect for activity summaries. Compatibility can vary by device, phone operating system, country, language, app version and account setup, so buyers should verify their exact hardware before purchasing.

Choose HSTN if you want a conventional-looking frame for daily use and moderate exercise. Choose Vanguard if secure fit, IP67 protection, action-capture modes and sports integrations matter more than a less conspicuous design.
Phone and app requirements
These are not standalone training computers. Oakley lists Android 10 or later or iOS 14.4 or later, wireless internet access, a valid Meta account and the Meta AI app as requirements. Android users also need location services enabled. A USB-C charging plug is required, although the charging cable is not included.
The glasses provide the physical interface—camera, microphones, speakers, voice controls and status indicators—but the phone and connected services remain important for setup, AI features, sharing, updates and fitness integrations. Meta AI availability can vary by country and language.

Durability, fit and water resistance
Vanguard includes Oakley’s Three-Point Fit system, three replaceable nose pads and an O Matter frame. It is designed to work with cycling helmets and hats, but a wide wraparound frame will not fit every face, helmet or head covering equally well. Oakley describes Vanguard as a wide, universal-fit model.

Sweat, salt, sunscreen, impacts, extreme temperatures and lens damage remain practical concerns. HSTN’s IPX4 rating is more limited and is intended for splashes rather than the same level of dust and water exposure.
Prescription availability also needs individual verification. Lens eligibility can depend on the prescription, lens type, frame, region and fulfillment process; not every prescription is necessarily supported.

“Up to nine hours” for Vanguard means a manufacturer estimate under specified conditions, not nine hours of continuous recording, high-volume audio, AI use or cold-weather activity. Camera use, calls, connectivity, temperature and settings can reduce runtime. The same qualification applies to HSTN’s eight-hour typical-use claim.
The glasses are convenient for short first-person clips, but the specifications alone do not establish that they replace a dedicated action camera. Rough terrain can challenge stabilization, while low light, glare, dirt, wind noise, heat and file-transfer speed can affect results. Organized races, gyms and other venues may also restrict wearable cameras.

Privacy and event etiquette
Vanguard and HSTN include cameras and microphones for recording and voice interaction. Their recording indicator may not be equally visible in every lighting condition or environment, so do not treat it as a substitute for consent.
- Ask before recording identifiable people, especially in gyms, races, schools or private spaces.
- Check event, venue and race rules before arriving with camera glasses.
- Avoid recording in changing rooms or other areas where privacy is expected.
- Review where captures and workout data are being shared across Meta, Garmin, Strava, Apple Health or Android Health Connect.
Before returning or selling the glasses, Oakley advises importing captures, deleting them, performing a factory reset and turning the device off. Follow the current instructions on the official product page.
Current price and availability
Prices depend on market, lens selection, prescription options, promotions and date. When checked on August 18, 2026, Oakley’s U.S. product page showed Vanguard at $499 and HSTN at $479 in the product-family selector. Meta’s May 2026 comparison listed HSTN from $399, illustrating why launch prices should not be treated as universal current prices.
The same Oakley page listed Vanguard replacement nose pads at $13 and replacement lenses at $85. The displayed Vanguard colorway showed an availability-notification prompt rather than an immediate purchase flow at that time, so stock should be checked before ordering. Oakley lists availability in markets including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, several European countries and Australia, with regional shipping restrictions; it specifically says the glasses cannot be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Who should buy which glasses?
- Buy Oakley Meta Vanguard if you cycle, ski, snowboard, trail-run or train outdoors at high intensity and value a secure frame, stronger water and dust resistance, automatic capture and connected workout data.
- Buy Oakley Meta HSTN if you want a more everyday-looking frame for casual workouts, golf, hiking, music, calls and hands-free capture.
- Consider Ray-Ban Meta if your priority is general-purpose photography, calls, messaging, music and AI rather than sport-specific fit and protection. Meta’s May 2026 comparison listed Ray-Ban Meta from $379.
- Use conventional sports sunglasses plus separate fitness hardware if you want no camera or microphone, already own a Garmin device, need specialized lenses, prioritize low cost and replaceability, or do not want a Meta-connected wearable.
Neither Oakley model should be purchased on the assumption that it works without a phone, measures heart rate through the frame or replaces a Garmin watch, cycling computer, dedicated action camera or coach.
