If LinkedIn messages will not send, first check whether the problem affects one recipient or everyone. A failure with one person often points to messaging eligibility, InMail credits, recipient settings, or a block. If messages fail to every recipient, check for an account restriction, a browser or network problem, or a LinkedIn outage. Start with a short test message to a first-degree connection, then follow the matching fix below.

Identify which LinkedIn message is failing

“Message” can mean several different things on LinkedIn, and each has different eligibility rules. Work out which one you are trying to send before changing settings or retrying.

  • Message to a first-degree connection: ordinarily available without InMail.
  • InMail to someone you are not connected to: depends on your product, available credits, and whether the recipient can receive that type of message.
  • Invitation note: attached to a connection request and subject to invitation-related rules, separate from ordinary messaging.
  • Message to a Page, Group member, or coworker: availability depends on the relevant LinkedIn feature and the relationship or eligibility LinkedIn recognizes.
  • Reply in an existing conversation: test it separately from starting a new conversation; one route may work while another does not.

LinkedIn’s messaging guidance describes the available routes and notes that messaging can be subject to limits.

Use this quick test to narrow down the cause

  1. Try a brief, plain-text message to a first-degree connection you can normally contact.
  2. If it sends, try the original recipient again only after checking that person’s eligibility and the message type.
  3. If it fails, open LinkedIn in a private or incognito browser window and try once more.
  4. If the private-window test fails, try another browser or device and a different network, such as mobile data instead of workplace Wi-Fi.
  5. Check LinkedIn’s service status page if the problem is sudden, affects multiple features, or appears to affect other members too.

A message that works to a connection but not a non-connection points toward recipient eligibility, InMail, or recipient-specific settings. If it fails for everyone across devices and networks, a restriction or service problem becomes more plausible. This test helps isolate the issue; changing devices is not a way to bypass an account restriction.

If the Send button is missing or greyed out

A missing or disabled button often means the current conversation route is unavailable, although an incomplete or malfunctioning composer can also cause it. Confirm that you are signed in and that the composer has a recipient and message. Then check whether the person is a first-degree connection or whether you have a valid route such as eligible InMail, an Open Profile, a Group or coworker message route, or a Page’s messaging feature.

If the button is disabled only for one person, investigate that recipient’s eligibility and settings rather than assuming your account is broken. LinkedIn also allows members to control certain incoming message types, and a blocked member cannot be messaged. An account that is deactivated, restricted, or otherwise unavailable may not behave like a normal profile. See LinkedIn’s message recipient preferences guidance.

If only a non-connection or InMail fails

Check the contact route

Having a paid LinkedIn subscription does not make every member contactable in every situation. A non-connection may need to be reachable through InMail, an Open Profile, a shared Group, a recognized coworker relationship, or another route LinkedIn supports. The recipient may also have opted out of a relevant message type or blocked you.

Check InMail credits and limits

Look at your account’s available InMail credits before trying again. Credit allocations depend on the product and subscription and can change; there is no single credit number that applies to every account. LinkedIn also describes limits on messaging, but does not publish one universal daily message count for all products and members. A paid plan or visible credits do not override recipient settings, blocks, or account restrictions. Check LinkedIn’s current messaging and InMail guidance rather than relying on an unsourced limit number.

Separate InMail failure from an invitation-note failure

If a connection request goes through but its note does not, investigate invitation-related limits rather than ordinary message delivery. LinkedIn treats invitation restrictions and personalized invitation-message limits as distinct issues. Do not repeatedly resubmit the request or add automation as a workaround; see its invitation restriction guidance.

If LinkedIn shows “Send failed” or a generic error

An immediate failure can come from a stale session, browser extension, VPN, workplace network, app problem, service incident, or account restriction. LinkedIn recommends a sequence of browser and connection checks in its message troubleshooting guide.

On a desktop browser

  1. Sign out of LinkedIn, then sign back in.
  2. Try the message in a private or incognito window.
  3. Disable browser extensions, especially LinkedIn-related tools, then retry.
  4. Clear the browser cache and LinkedIn cookies, sign in again, and test.
  5. Try another supported browser and turn off a VPN for the test.

If LinkedIn works on a personal connection but not a company device or work VPN, ask workplace IT whether the network or browser configuration is interfering. LinkedIn’s general troubleshooting guidance covers broader browser and access problems.

On the mobile app

Force-close and reopen the app, check for an available app update, and sign out and back in. Test once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data, or compare the app with LinkedIn in a browser. If the problem is app-only, reinstalling may be a later step; make sure you know your sign-in and account-recovery details first. Exact menus vary by device and app version.

Test the message content

Try a short plain-text message with no link, emoji, image, or attachment. LinkedIn’s troubleshooting information does not establish one universal current character limit or attachment rule for every messaging surface, so do not assume a particular length or word caused the failure. If plain text works, add the original content back in stages to identify whether a link or attachment is involved.

Check for a LinkedIn account restriction

Suspect a restriction if several message types stop working at once, invitations also fail, or LinkedIn displays a warning, verification request, or suspension notice. Restrictions can also affect Sales Navigator features such as InMail, invitations, searches, or profile viewing.

LinkedIn says restrictions may follow unusually high invitation activity, large numbers of ignored or pending invitations, spam reports, suspected automation, or prohibited third-party tools. Most invitation restrictions are automatically removed within about one week, according to LinkedIn, but that is not a guaranteed timeline for every restriction. Sales Navigator’s guidance describes some temporary usage restrictions as generally lifting automatically after approximately 24 hours; that guidance applies to Sales Navigator and is not a promise for every LinkedIn account. Review LinkedIn’s pages on account restrictions, invitation restrictions, and Sales Navigator restrictions.

Remove automation and scraping tools

Disable or remove extensions and services that scrape data, modify LinkedIn, auto-connect, auto-message, or automate profile views. LinkedIn says such tools can violate its rules and lead to temporary or permanent restrictions; they may also interfere with the composer. After disabling them, sign out and back in, then test normally. Do not keep testing while automation is active or try to evade a restriction with another account or tool. If LinkedIn has permanently restricted the account, routine browser fixes will not restore messaging; see its permanent restriction guidance.

Check whether LinkedIn is having a service problem

Check the LinkedIn status page before making account changes when the issue starts abruptly or other LinkedIn features fail too. LinkedIn also points users to its status information through this Help Center page. If the same failure occurs for multiple people across devices and networks, a service issue is more likely than a problem specific to your account.

Tell a sending failure from a delivery or response issue

Check the conversation thread and Sent area before trying to send the same message again. If the message appears in the conversation, it may have been submitted even if the recipient has not replied. No response does not prove non-delivery: the recipient may not have seen it, may have notifications disabled, or may choose not to respond. Avoid duplicate messages unless you have confirmed the original did not submit.

Contact LinkedIn support with useful evidence

If the problem persists after the relevant checks, sign in to LinkedIn, open the Help Center, and select Contact us at the bottom of an article or the Help Center homepage. Choose Chat with support where available and follow the prompts. Availability of chat may vary. LinkedIn says it does not offer customer support by phone and warns that paid “LinkedIn support phone” services are unaffiliated; use its official support guidance.

For a reproducible messaging issue, LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance asks for a HAR file, an error screenshot, the recipient profile URL, message content that can be sent to that recipient, and permission for LinkedIn to reproduce the problem. Also note the exact error, date and time with time zone, device, browser and version (or app version), whether one or all recipients are affected, whether plain text works, and whether a VPN, extension, or workplace network was involved. Do not send a message containing sensitive information just to reproduce the issue.

Avoid these unhelpful fixes

  • Do not keep clicking Send or resending the same message. Repeated retries do not resolve eligibility or restrictions and may add more suspicious activity.
  • Do not buy Premium or Sales Navigator just to repair a broken composer. Paid products may provide InMail features or credits, but do not override recipient preferences, blocks, platform limits, or restrictions.
  • Do not use automation or scraping tools to get around a limit. They can interfere with LinkedIn and create additional account risk.
  • Do not pay an unofficial phone-support service. Use LinkedIn’s Help Center route instead.
  • Do not treat silence as proof of failure. Verify the message status in the conversation before sending a duplicate.
