Meizu unveiled the 22 Next, also called the “AI Little Cube,” as a compact, AI-first device—not simply a smaller Meizu smartphone. The company says it is designed for voice-led task automation, coordination between AI agents, expressive avatars and personalized memory. But the announcement did not establish how reliably those features work, and Meizu has not announced a price, firm sales date or complete hardware specifications in the available reports.
What Meizu actually unveiled
Meizu introduced the 22 Next at its Fan Spring Festival event on January 10, 2026. It described the device as an independent AI terminal with a roughly 4-inch form factor and native AIOS software. The “4-inch” description identifies its compact size; the reports do not provide a complete display specification, such as resolution, panel type or refresh rate. IT之家’s event report covers the announcement, while Gizmochina’s coverage summarizes the reported feature set and availability gaps.
That distinction matters: Meizu presented the 22 Next as a new kind of AI device, not as a conventional phone whose only unusual feature is a small screen. The idea is to make requests and tasks—not app icons—the main way a person interacts with it. The company’s announcement gives a product direction, but not yet enough detail to judge the finished device as a phone, a standalone assistant or a useful companion to one.
What the announced features are supposed to do
Meizu’s feature list combines several ideas that are often bundled together under the label “AI assistant.” They are different capabilities, with different practical requirements:

- AI-first interface: The device is meant to prioritize conversational requests and task execution rather than relying only on a conventional grid of apps.
- Task robot: Meizu says a user will be able to give one instruction for an app workflow, including in apps that use traditional graphical interfaces. In principle, that could mean asking the device to find information in an app and carry out a follow-up step instead of tapping through each screen.
- Agent-to-Agent collaboration: Meizu describes a protocol for different AI agents to communicate and cooperate on complex tasks. This is more ambitious than one assistant generating an answer, but the announcement does not identify compatible agents or explain how they exchange information.
- Avatar interaction and memory: The company says the device will offer more than 100 expressive avatar interfaces and retain information from interactions for more personalized responses or reminders.
- Connected-device control: The 22 Next is presented as a way to interact with Meizu phones, IoT products, smart-home equipment and vehicles, with accessories envisioned for portable, desktop and in-car use.
These are announced intentions, not independently verified results. No detailed workflow documentation or independent demonstration in the cited reports establishes how well the device handles everyday tasks, changing app layouts or interruptions.
What “AI agent collaboration” means—and what remains unknown
It helps to separate three levels of assistance:
- Single-agent assistance: One assistant interprets a request and replies, such as answering a question or drafting a message.
- Task automation: The assistant takes a sequence of actions in an app or service, such as finding an appointment and adding it to a calendar.
- Agent-to-agent coordination: Separate agents exchange information or divide work—for example, one service finding a suitable appointment while another checks a calendar.
Meizu says the 22 Next natively supports cross-agent collaboration and that it plans to open the platform for future AI collaboration and development. But the announcement does not say which third-party agents will work with it, whether the protocol will be open to developers, or whether the agents run on the device, in the cloud or through a mixture of both. It also leaves basic safeguards unanswered: how an agent gets permission, how payments are approved, what happens when agents disagree, and how a failed task can be stopped or undone. Until those details are published, “Agent-to-Agent” describes a promised capability, not proof of broad interoperability or an established industry standard.
“Emotional memory” is not the same as understanding emotions
In coverage of the announcement, the avatar system is described as having more than 100 expressive interfaces and the ability to evolve through interaction. Meizu’s “AI emotional memory” is reported to include information such as a user’s identity, mood and health condition, which could inform later responses or reminders. That description should be read as a product feature claim, not evidence that the device experiences emotion or reliably understands a person’s mental state.
There are several distinct concepts here. Memory means retaining information from earlier interactions. Personalization means using that information to tailor a response. Emotion recognition means inferring a mood from signals such as language or voice; that inference can be wrong. Emotion simulation means displaying expressions or language that seem empathetic. None of those, by itself, demonstrates actual emotional understanding. An avatar with many expressions may make an interface feel more personable, but it does not establish that the device knows how someone feels.

Persistent memory can be useful for recurring routines, but it also raises questions that matter more when the remembered information includes health or mood. Meizu has not, in the cited announcement coverage, detailed whether users can inspect, correct, export or delete memories; how long they are kept; whether they are stored locally or remotely; whether they are encrypted; or whether they may be used to train models. It is also unclear whether people can disable mood-related inference while keeping ordinary reminders, or maintain separate profiles for different household members.
Could the task robot handle real app workflows?
A single spoken instruction sounds convenient, but the hard part is not just understanding the words. Consider a request such as “Find the latest message from Alex and summarize it,” “Order the usual coffee,” or “Add tomorrow’s appointment to my calendar and notify the driver.” A reliable system has to identify the right person, account and service; interpret missing details; complete authentication if needed; and report what it actually did.
Before trusting an automation with consequential actions, users would need to know whether the 22 Next:

- asks a follow-up when “Sam,” “it” or “the usual” could mean more than one thing;
- requires confirmation before purchases, payments, messages, emails or deletions;
- handles login screens and two-factor authentication without exposing credentials;
- recovers safely if an app changes its layout or a cloud service is unavailable;
- lets the user cancel a multi-step task midway and see which actions have already happened; and
- prevents unsafe actions, such as changing vehicle settings while driving or unlocking a door from an ambiguous request.
The reports establish that Meizu announced GUI-app compatibility and task automation, not how these edge cases are handled. For actions that affect money, privacy, other people or physical devices, clear permissions, confirmations and an understandable undo path are essential.

Is it a smartphone replacement?
It is too early to call the 22 Next either a replacement for a smartphone or merely an accessory. Meizu’s “independent AI terminal” positioning suggests it is intended to do more than act as a passive remote control. Gizmochina also reported 5G capability, but that detail is secondary reporting rather than a complete published specification sheet.
At the same time, the announcement coverage does not provide a full account of calling and messaging, camera, battery, processor, memory, storage, app distribution or operating-system compatibility. A roughly 4-inch device may be convenient to carry or mount, but a compact screen can be limiting for long reading, typing, navigation, visual checks and recovering manually when an automated task fails. Without details about its apps and communications, it is not possible to tell whether a user could rely on it instead of a phone.
The safest description is a proposed independent AI terminal or companion whose relationship to the smartphone is still unclear. Whether it can stand alone, or works best alongside a Meizu phone, will depend on its final hardware, supported services and software.

The 22 Next fits Meizu’s wider push toward AI-led software and connected devices. Meizu’s official Meizu 22 product page promotes Flyme AIOS 2, task robots, Aicy assistant functions and integrations involving phones, PCs, AR glasses and vehicles. That context suggests the new device is part of a broader ecosystem strategy rather than an isolated gadget.

For a user already invested in Meizu phones, Flyme software, compatible smart-home products or supported connected cars, a single control point could be useful—if the promised integrations work as intended. But an ecosystem claim is not a guarantee that every car, appliance or service will be compatible. Meizu’s own phone materials qualify some vehicle features by supported model and software version. Buyers would need a specific compatibility list for the 22 Next, not just a general promise of multi-device control.
This also creates a trade-off. Tight integration can make routine actions smoother, but it may tie the device’s usefulness to Meizu hardware, selected services and continuing support. The announcement material does not establish how useful the device would be outside that ecosystem or what happens if a cloud service, agent or integration is discontinued.

Meizu has unveiled the 22 Next, but the announcement coverage does not establish a complete commercial launch. Gizmochina reported that pricing and release timing had not been announced; IT之家 likewise said further product information was not yet available. No verified retail price, preorder page, firm sales date or international availability is established by the cited sources.

The reports also do not provide confirmed processor, battery capacity, RAM, storage, camera, dimensions or weight. Nor do they give a complete display specification. Treat the 4-inch figure as a reported description of the mini form factor, not a full hardware specification. The reported 5G detail should likewise be treated as secondary coverage until Meizu publishes a specification sheet.

Practical verdict for prospective buyers: there is not enough confirmed information to compare its value with a phone or another AI device, and no basis to recommend buying it today. Wait for an official sales listing, full specifications, regional availability details, privacy documentation and independent testing of the automation and memory features.
Why the announcement is worth watching
The 22 Next reflects a broader shift in how device makers imagine interacting with software: instead of opening apps and navigating menus, users may increasingly describe an outcome and let an assistant coordinate the steps. A small, dedicated device could make that interaction available around the home, at a desk or in a car. Meizu’s proposal goes a step further by combining task automation, persistent personalization and cooperation between agents.
But those pieces are only valuable if they are dependable, transparent and safe. A system that can remember sensitive details and operate apps needs controls as strong as its convenience claims. Agent collaboration matters only if compatible services exist and users can understand what each one is allowed to do. The 22 Next is an interesting product direction; its announcement alone does not show that those conditions have been met.
