Choose MEGA for privacy-focused storage and encrypted sharing; choose Yandex Disk for Yandex ecosystem features, family storage, and phone photo and video uploads if the service is reliably available and payable where you live. Neither is the right choice as the sole copy of irreplaceable files: syncing can replicate deletions or corruption, so keep an independent backup.
MEGA vs. Yandex Disk at a glance
These are not identical products. MEGA is primarily a cloud-storage, synchronization, and sharing service built around client-side encryption. Yandex Disk is part of Yandex 360, a wider ecosystem that includes services such as mail, documents, and calendar. The right choice depends on whether privacy architecture or ecosystem convenience matters more to you.
| What you need | Better default | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Private storage for sensitive files | MEGA | Its client-side encryption is designed so the provider cannot ordinarily decrypt protected file contents. |
| Phone photo and video uploads | Yandex Disk | Eligible Yandex 360 plans advertise unlimited mobile photo and video uploads, subject to the feature’s terms and scope. |
| Family storage and Yandex services | Yandex Disk | Yandex offers family plans for up to eight people and bundles Disk with other services. |
| International use | MEGA, in general | Yandex availability, payment, and practical reliability vary by country, so check access before depending on it. |
| Large individual uploads | Yandex Disk on an eligible work plan | Yandex advertises uploads up to 100 GB for qualifying work plans; that does not mean unrestricted downloads or bandwidth. |
| Collaborative productivity | Yandex Disk | Its broader ecosystem includes mail, documents, calendar, and shared-folder features. |
Yandex’s plan categories and features are described on its Yandex 360 plan page. MEGA’s current storage tiers and quotas should be checked on its pricing page before subscribing.

Do not choose based on a headline free-storage number alone. A usable plan also depends on transfer allowances, file-size limits, bonus rules, sharing restrictions, and whether the account can be paid for in your country.

Free capacity and limits
MEGA’s free capacity and bonus conditions can change, and may vary by eligibility or promotion. Check the live MEGA pricing page for the allowance currently offered to your account. Yandex’s public plan pages emphasize paid Yandex 360 tiers; its free allowance and conditions are not established as a single globally uniform figure. Check the Yandex 360 site for your market rather than assuming a quota quoted for another country.
In either service, storage space is separate from the amount of data you can transfer or the size of an individual file you can upload. A large account quota does not guarantee that a large public download can be served without restrictions.
Paid plans and regional prices
Yandex’s English-language page has displayed Personal tiers of 200 GB and 1 TB, including figures of about $2.11 per month for 200 GB and $3.17 per month for 1 TB, with the 1 TB option also shown at about $2.42 per month under annual billing. These are market- and billing-sensitive displayed prices, not universal rates; confirm the current amount, currency, billing term, and tax in your account before buying. See Yandex Disk’s plan and download page.
Yandex also lists different plan details and ruble prices in Russian-language materials, illustrating that local plan composition and pricing can differ. See its Russian pricing information. MEGA prices likewise need to be checked for your country and billing period; do not compare a Yandex annual-billing figure with a MEGA monthly figure or a price in another currency.

Family and heavy-storage use
Yandex Family plans are described for up to eight people, with storage allocated per participant; verify the current plan’s allocation and eligibility on the Yandex 360 page. MEGA’s current family or business offerings and their limits are not stated here, so verify them directly before comparing costs. For heavy storage, Yandex advertises work plans with up to 30 TB in some plan materials and uploads up to 100 GB on qualifying work plans; availability and limits depend on plan and market. Check Yandex’s plan comparison.
Privacy, encryption, and account security
MEGA’s client-side encryption
MEGA’s distinguishing feature is client-side encryption: ordinary file contents are encrypted on the user’s device, using keys controlled by the user, before storage. Its security model is designed so MEGA cannot ordinarily decrypt those protected contents. That is materially different from encryption in transit or at rest where the provider may still control the keys. See MEGA’s security explanation.
This does not make an account anonymous or protect every kind of information. The service still processes account, operational, metadata, billing, and abuse-prevention information. Encryption also cannot protect a file after it is opened on a compromised device or copied by a recipient. Because the provider has limited ability to recover client-side encrypted content, losing credentials or recovery information can make access difficult or impossible. Keep recovery information offline and secure.

Yandex Disk’s documented protections
Yandex describes encryption, antivirus scanning, login verification, two-password authentication, and controls for shared links. Its public materials establish these protections, but do not establish the same default provider-blind, end-to-end model that is central to MEGA’s positioning. Do not treat ordinary Yandex Disk storage as zero-knowledge encryption. See Yandex’s cloud security information and its Disk overview.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For either service, use a unique password and enable available two-factor or login verification. Encryption architecture is only one part of a threat model: consider endpoint security, account recovery, applicable laws, service jurisdiction, and whether your concern is routine commercial privacy, account takeover, business confidentiality, or state-level access.
Sharing files and folders
MEGA links
MEGA supports file and folder sharing with links, and link handling can include a decryption key. Anyone who obtains the complete link or key may be able to access the content, so do not post a full access link publicly if the file is meant for a limited audience. Check MEGA’s current help documentation for which password, expiry, and sharing controls are available on your account or plan.
Encrypted sharing is useful when confidentiality matters, but it places responsibility on the sender to deliver the key safely and on the recipient to protect it. A recipient may also copy or redistribute a file after decrypting it.
Yandex links and shared folders
Yandex supports public-link controls that can include a password, expiry time, and download restrictions, subject to availability and plan. Its instructions are in Yandex’s sharing documentation. Shared folders can grant edit access; Yandex documents up to 200 invited participants, excluding the owner, with additional limits on creating or joining folders. Folder-sharing administration is handled in the desktop browser. See Yandex’s shared-folder guide.

For either service, test a link in a logged-out browser before sending it widely. Confirm whether recipients can preview, download, or edit what you intend, and whether any password or expiry setting behaves as expected.
Desktop sync, mobile uploads, and backup
Both services support file access and synchronization workflows, but syncing is not the same as backup. If you delete a file in a synced folder, the deletion may propagate to the cloud and other devices. A sync client can also reproduce accidental changes or corruption.
Yandex’s desktop software for Windows and macOS describes synchronization between computer and cloud, including options to keep files online-only or locally available; see its download page. MEGA’s desktop and mobile apps are described at MEGA Desktop and MEGA Mobile. Exact operating-system support, selective-sync behavior, recovery periods, and current version-history limits should be checked in the providers’ live documentation: MEGA Help and Yandex plan details.

- Do not put one service’s sync folder inside another sync folder; overlapping clients can cause duplicate activity or conflicts.
- Check whether deleting a local file also deletes its cloud copy before using sync as an archive.
- Simultaneous edits on multiple devices can create conflicts; keep a separate copy of important working files.
- Large initial uploads can run into transfer limits even when storage capacity is sufficient.
- Online-only files may not open without a connection; mark essential travel files for local availability.
- Mobile camera upload can duplicate files already imported elsewhere, and background upload may depend on app and device settings.
Yandex plan materials describe extended file history, including up to 90 days in specified paid-plan contexts; the exact retention depends on plan and market. Do not assume that a cloud sync service provides immutable or ransomware-proof backup. Keep a separate local or offline copy of important data.

Photos, videos, and large files
Phone media
Yandex 360 advertises unlimited storage for photos and videos uploaded from a phone with eligible plans. The claim concerns that specified mobile-upload workflow, not unlimited storage for every file type or upload method. Confirm the current plan and app conditions on Yandex’s Disk page. Check how original quality, compression, HEIC or RAW files, Live Photos, 4K video, and edited copies are handled for your device and workflow.
Before deleting originals from a phone, verify that the upload has completed and that the files can be opened or downloaded from another device. MEGA also offers mobile apps, but its current camera-upload behavior and whether those uploads count toward storage should be confirmed in MEGA’s mobile app information.
Large individual files and transfer limits
Yandex advertises uploads up to 100 GB on qualifying work plans, while other plan limits may be lower. Its terms also allow restrictions intended to curb mass file sharing. See the plan page and Disk terms. A maximum upload size does not guarantee that recipients can download a file quickly or without quota limits.
For MEGA, check the live pricing page and help center for current storage, transfer, and download limits. Those figures can change, and free and paid accounts may be treated differently. For sending a large file, consider both upload completion and the recipient’s practical ability to retrieve it.
Regional availability and business use
Yandex’s prices, payment methods, registration, app availability, and practical reliability vary substantially by country. If you are outside its core markets, confirm that you can create or use an account, pay for the intended tier, install the apps, and access files reliably before migrating a large library. Do not assume that a price shown in one region applies to you.
Businesses should compare more than storage capacity and per-user price. Check identity and administrator controls, audit logs, retention, legal hold, support, and compliance against the organization’s requirements. Yandex shared disks are intended for collaboration and documented for web use in current support material; see Yandex’s shared-disk guide. MEGA is storage- and sharing-oriented and should not be assumed to replace a full office productivity suite.
Quick Recap
Which service should you choose?
- Privacy-first personal user: Choose MEGA if client-side encryption for stored file contents is your priority and you can protect recovery information and link keys.
- Phone photographer or videographer: Consider Yandex Disk if the eligible mobile-upload feature fits your needs and you have confirmed regional access and plan conditions.
- Family: Yandex is a strong candidate if its family plan is available to you and its per-person storage allocation fits the household.
- International traveler or expatriate: MEGA is the more natural default when broad international use is more important than Yandex ecosystem integration; test account access and offline availability before travel.
- Large-file sender: Yandex may suit uploads within qualifying work-plan limits, but confirm both the sender’s and recipients’ transfer constraints.
- Small business: Choose only after checking regional availability, administration, retention, compliance, and support requirements; neither should be selected on a storage-price comparison alone.
- Backup user: Use either as one component of a backup plan, not the only copy of irreplaceable files.
Before migrating files
- Export a complete copy from the current provider and keep it until the move is verified.
- Confirm the destination plan’s available storage, file-size caps, transfer rules, regional payment, and sharing requirements.
- Upload a representative test set, including large files, long filenames, photos, and videos in the formats you use.
- Download a sample from another device and compare file counts or hashes where practical.
- Test a shared link while logged out, including any password, expiry, or download restriction.
- Enable two-factor or login verification and save account recovery information securely offline.
- Check version history and deletion recovery for your selected plan; do not assume sync alone is backup.
- Keep the old account active until files, links, and device synchronization are confirmed.
- Maintain an independent local or offline backup after the migration.
