MediaTek formally launched the Dimensity 9000 on December 16, 2021, as a flagship 5G smartphone platform. The company said the first phones would arrive in Q1 2022 and named OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor among the manufacturers adopting it. It was a complete smartphone system-on-chip—not a phone or a standalone modem—with CPU, graphics, AI, imaging, display, and connectivity components. In 2026, it is best understood as a landmark 2021–22 platform, not a new-generation chip.
Why the Dimensity 9000 announcement mattered
The launch marked MediaTek’s push into the premium flagship-phone segment. MediaTek described the chip as the first smartphone processor built on TSMC’s N4 process, which it called 4nm-class. A smaller process can enable greater transistor density and efficiency, but “4nm” alone does not predict a phone’s battery life or sustained speed. Cooling, firmware, display, modem use, battery capacity, and the manufacturer’s tuning all shape the result.
The formal launch date was December 16, 2021; that is distinct from earlier preview coverage. MediaTek announced the silicon and platform capabilities, while phone makers determined each device’s cameras, cooling, software, regional configuration, and release schedule. MediaTek’s launch announcement said the first devices were expected in Q1 2022.

These are platform limits, not a promise that every phone using the chip includes or enables every feature. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 specification page lists the capabilities; the handset maker selects the actual components and settings.

CPU, memory, and storage
The 1+3+4 Armv9 CPU layout pairs one high-performance Cortex-X2 core with three Cortex-A710 performance cores and four lower-power Cortex-A510 cores. Broadly, the X2 is intended for demanding foreground bursts, the A710 cores for performance workloads, and the A510 cores for lighter or background tasks. This arrangement aims to balance responsiveness and efficiency, but clock speeds do not tell the whole story: cooling and power limits affect how long a phone can sustain its peak performance.
LPDDR5X support reaches a stated data rate of 7500Mbps. That figure describes memory data rate, not storage speed. MediaTek claimed LPDDR5X could be up to 20% more power-efficient than LPDDR5 in its comparison; that is a company claim, not a guarantee of a 20% longer battery life for a particular phone. The platform also supports UFS 3.1 storage. Memory capacity, storage capacity, and the specific components used are handset decisions.
Graphics and gaming
The Dimensity 9000 uses an Arm Mali-G710 MC10 GPU and MediaTek’s HyperEngine 5.0 gaming features. MediaTek highlighted AI-enhanced variable-rate shading, hybrid AI-GPU super resolution, Wi-Fi latency features, and a Vulkan-based ray-tracing SDK for Android.

A developer SDK makes a graphics technique available to supported software; it does not mean every Android game uses ray tracing or that every Dimensity 9000 phone delivers the same frame rate. Game support, resolution, graphics settings, cooling, and thermal throttling determine the experience. Treat MediaTek’s “first” and efficiency descriptions as attributed platform claims, not independent measurements.
Camera and AI capabilities
The Imagiq 790 image signal processor was a major part of the announcement. MediaTek specified 18-bit HDR processing and throughput up to 9 gigapixels per second, with support for sensors up to 320MP. It also claimed simultaneous triple-camera 18-bit HDR video recording, 4K HDR video with AI noise reduction, camera functions such as autofocus and exposure assistance, and two-times lossless zoom in supported implementations.
Those maxima do not define the camera in a shipping phone. “320MP support” means the platform can support a sensor of that class; it does not mean a phone will take 320MP photos. Lenses, sensor size, stabilization, color tuning, software, memory bandwidth, and thermal limits all matter. Manufacturers may expose only some platform features.

For AI workloads, MediaTek used its fifth-generation APU, also called the APU 590 on its product page. It supports INT8, INT16, and FP16 calculations and can work with imaging, video, and other multimedia functions. MediaTek claimed up to four times the power efficiency of its previous-generation APU under its stated comparison. That figure should not be read as a general-purpose AI benchmark or a promised improvement in every app.

The integrated modem supports 3GPP Release 16, sub-6GHz 5G, standalone and non-standalone modes, and 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual Active capability. MediaTek’s “up to 7Gbps” peak download figure assumes a specified three-component-carrier aggregation configuration using up to 300MHz of bandwidth. It is a theoretical platform maximum, not an expected everyday download speed. Actual performance depends on local spectrum and network deployment, signal, carrier aggregation, antenna design, and the phone’s regional configuration.
The platform also supports Wi-Fi 6E with 2×2 antenna support and 160MHz channels, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth LE Audio features including dual-link true-wireless-stereo support. Wi-Fi 6E requires a compatible router and availability of the relevant spectrum in the country. SIM behavior, 5G bands, eSIM availability, and wireless features must be checked on the exact phone model.

Display support reaches WQHD+ at up to 144Hz or Full HD+ at up to 180Hz, with MediaTek Intelligent Display Sync 2.0. Wireless display output can reach 4K60 HDR10+ under supported implementations. These figures do not mean every Dimensity 9000 phone has a high-refresh panel: resolution, refresh behavior, brightness, HDR, and panel quality are chosen by the manufacturer.

One documented example is the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition. OPPO and MediaTek identify it as a Dimensity 9000 device; MediaTek documents a 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 configuration, while OPPO lists a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED display. MediaTek named OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor in its launch announcement, but adoption did not mean every brand sold a Dimensity 9000 phone in every country. Model names and processors can vary by market. Before buying, verify the exact model number and chipset on the manufacturer’s regional product page; do not infer the processor from a generic listing.

Dimensity 9000 vs. Dimensity 9000+
The Dimensity 9000+ was a later refinement announced in June 2022, not the chip MediaTek formally launched in December 2021. Both belong to the same 4nm-class Armv9 platform family. The 9000+ raises the Cortex-X2 peak clock from 3.05GHz to 3.2GHz. MediaTek claimed CPU performance more than 5% higher and GPU performance more than 10% higher than the original. These are manufacturer comparisons, not a guarantee of equivalent gains in every phone. MediaTek’s 9000+ announcement has the company’s comparison.
What to consider if buying a Dimensity 9000 phone in 2026
The chipset can still be part of a capable handset, but the age and condition of the whole phone matter more than its original headline specifications. Most devices launched around 2022, so current buyers are likely evaluating used, refurbished, or imported stock. Check:
- Exact variant and network support: Confirm the full model number, supported LTE and 5G bands, and carrier compatibility for your country. A theoretical modem maximum does not establish compatibility with your carrier.
- Software support: The SoC does not set the update policy. Check the manufacturer’s support information for that exact model and region, including remaining security updates.
- Battery and condition: Ask about battery health, repair history, warranty, return policy, and seller reputation, especially for used or refurbished devices.
- Regional software and services: Imported variants may differ in Google services, language options, warranty, bands, or software region. Confirm these before purchase.
- Actual camera, display, and cooling: Check the phone’s implemented sensors, stabilization, panel specifications, and sustained-performance reviews rather than relying on the SoC’s maximum support figures.
- Total value: Compare an older flagship with a new regional mid-range phone. A newer device may be a better choice if longer updates, battery condition, warranty, or local network support matter most.
Bottom line
MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 was a significant flagship launch for the company: a 4nm-class, Armv9 platform bringing LPDDR5X, advanced imaging, integrated Release-16 5G, and flagship gaming features to phones arriving in 2022. Its specification sheet describes what manufacturers could build, not what every device delivered. In 2026, judge a Dimensity 9000 phone by its exact regional variant, software support, network compatibility, condition, and implementation—not by the chip’s launch-era maximums alone.
