MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9500s and Dimensity 8500 on January 15, 2026: a 3nm flagship-family chip and a 4nm platform for premium smartphones. They target different tiers, not two versions of the same processor. The announcement details their capabilities, but does not confirm a U.S. phone, carrier certification, launch date or price.

These are platform specifications and company claims, not guarantees that every phone will use every feature or reach the listed maximums. MediaTek’s announcement and its 9500s and 8500 product pages describe the platforms; actual results will depend on the handset.
Dimensity 9500s: a new option in the flagship family
The 9500s pairs a 3nm process with an all-big-core CPU: one Arm Cortex-X925 running at up to 3.73GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek lists 12MB of L3 cache, 10MB of system-level cache and 19MB of CPU cache, along with UFS 4 storage with MCQ support. The listed maximum memory speed is 10,667Mbps for LPDDR5X.

Cooling, software scheduling, power limits and memory configuration all affect how a phone performs, especially under long workloads.

How it compares with the regular Dimensity 9500
The 9500s is not established as a replacement for the regular Dimensity 9500. It is better understood as a different flagship-family option. The regular 9500 was announced on September 22, 2025, and MediaTek specifies TSMC’s N3P process and a 4.21GHz ultra core. The 9500s has a different listed CPU arrangement and a lower maximum clock for its lead core; its cited launch material says 3nm but does not identify N3P.

MediaTek’s specifications do not establish which chip is faster in a finished phone. The regular 9500’s higher listed peak CPU clock is not a complete performance comparison, and handset cooling, software and configuration matter. Gaming and graphics
The 9500s uses an Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU. The product page lists 11- or 12-core configurations, meaning phones with the same chip name could have different GPU configurations. MediaTek cites advanced ray tracing, Opacity Micromap support, and up to 165 frames per second in supported scenarios. It also promotes power-optimized gaming above 120 FPS in selected titles through Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 and Frame Rate Converter 3.0.

Those figures are conditional, not a promise of 165-FPS gameplay in any game. Results depend on the title, resolution, graphics settings, display refresh rate and thermal conditions. Frame-rate conversion is not the same as the GPU natively rendering every displayed frame, and ray-tracing support does not specify how well a particular game will run. The available specifications do not provide independent benchmark results or sustained gaming tests.
AI, cameras and video
MediaTek describes the 9500s NPU as capable of supporting generative reasoning, multimodal models and agent-based tasks. Its listed use cases include live-photo processing, object or person removal, image outpainting and matting, and summaries of meetings, documents and calls. MediaTek also names Stable Diffusion XL, generative-AI video capabilities, Speculative Decoding+ and its NeuroPilot Gen-AI SDK.
Those are chip-level capabilities, not a checklist of features guaranteed in a retail phone. The manufacturer chooses which models and tools to implement, how much memory and storage to allocate, and whether processing happens on-device, in the cloud or through a mix of both. The NPU alone does not guarantee a particular assistant, editor, privacy policy or offline mode.

For imaging, MediaTek lists an Imagiq processor, 18-bit RAW capture, full-speed 30-FPS focus tracking, support for sensors up to 320MP, 108MP capture at 30 FPS and up to three 36MP cameras at 30 FPS. The product page lists 8K60 video capture, while the launch announcement highlights 8K Dolby Vision HDR recording with full-focus tracking. It also lists 4K capture with portrait bokeh.

Sensor size, lens design, optical stabilization, image processing and camera software are at least as important as megapixel support. A phone maker may also choose not to implement every listed mode.
Connectivity
The 9500s has a Release-17 5G modem with four-component-carrier aggregation and a stated peak downlink of up to 7Gbps. MediaTek also lists Wi-Fi 7 with a peak data rate up to 6.5Gbps, Bluetooth 5.4, dual-SIM dual-active and dual-data support, and UltraSave 4.0 and AI Network Suite 2.0 features. The company says its Xtra Range 3.0 enables direct phone-to-phone Bluetooth communication up to 5km under supported conditions.

These are theoretical or conditional platform capabilities, not expected everyday speeds. Actual cellular performance depends on network deployment, supported bands, carrier certification, antenna design and local coverage. Neither the modem specification nor the Bluetooth range claim confirms that a particular U.S. phone will support a given carrier or achieve those peak figures.

The Dimensity 8500 is a separate, lower-positioned platform, not simply a slower configuration of the 9500s. MediaTek describes it for premium smartphones. Its 4nm design has eight Cortex-A725 CPU cores running at up to 3.4GHz, LPDDR5X support up to 9,600Mbps and a Mali-G720 GPU.
MediaTek claims the 8500 delivers 25% higher peak GPU performance and 20% lower power consumption than the previous-generation Dimensity platform. These are company comparisons, not independent test results; they should not be read as a guarantee of a particular frame rate or battery-life gain in a phone.

Eight performance-oriented cores and fast memory could make the chip attractive for gaming and multitasking in premium phones below the traditional flagship tier. But the absence of conventional low-power CPU cores does not automatically make the chip more efficient: power management, workloads and the phone’s thermal design determine the outcome.
MediaTek lists ray tracing for mainstream games, full-frame stabilization, faster loading and gaming-efficiency features. Its eighth-generation NPU is described as supporting mainstream large language models, multimodal language models and image-generation models. The company also names AI ultra-clear telephoto processing, an AI semantic engine for image-content optimization and NeuroPilot Gen-AI SDK support. As with the 9500s, these capabilities require handset software and implementation; they do not guarantee a particular AI feature or camera result.
The 8500 is marketed as 5G-Advanced and its product page specifies 3GPP Release-16, sub-6GHz 5G and carrier aggregation. The label does not guarantee compatibility with every network. Check the final phone’s band support and carrier certification, especially before importing a device for U.S. use.
What the split means for buyers
The 9500s has the higher-tier positioning and a more advanced listed graphics and imaging feature set. The 8500 is aimed at premium phones where manufacturers may seek strong CPU, gaming and AI capabilities without positioning the device as a top-tier flagship. Its importance to buyers will depend on the actual phone’s price and how well it balances performance, battery life and other hardware.
- For gaming: Look for independent, sustained gaming tests, the phone’s cooling design, display refresh rate and the exact GPU configuration. Peak FPS claims are not enough.
- For battery life: Wait for handset-level battery testing. A smaller process number or an efficiency claim does not by itself establish longer endurance.
- For photography: Compare camera samples, sensors, lenses and stabilization rather than relying on the maximum megapixel count or video modes listed for the chip.
- For AI: Confirm which features ship, whether they work offline, what data is sent to cloud services and how much memory they require.
- For long-term ownership: Check the phone maker’s Android update policy, warranty and repair support. The processor does not determine software support longevity.
U.S. availability: no phone or price confirmed
The January 15 announcement is a MediaTek chip announcement, not a U.S. handset launch. The official material cited here does not establish a confirmed U.S. retail phone using either chip, U.S. carrier certification, a U.S. launch date or U.S. pricing. MediaTek sells platforms to device makers; its specification pages are not consumer purchase listings.
For U.S. buyers, the phone matters more than the chip name. Before considering a specific model, verify its LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE and eSIM support if needed, carrier acceptance, warranty coverage and software-update commitment. An imported model may lack the bands or certification your carrier requires, or may not include U.S. warranty support. Until a manufacturer announces a model and its U.S. details, these chips are not a basis for a U.S. buying recommendation.
