Direct answer: On Windows, choose an MCP server based on the client and integration route you will use. Visual Studio with GitHub Copilot loads servers through its agent tool picker and .mcp.json; Windows on-device connectors use a separate registration and containment model. For local project work, start with a path-limited filesystem server, run Node-based packages through cmd /c when required, and review every read/write permission before enabling tools.
What an MCP server does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers expose tools, resources, or data to an MCP-compatible AI client. A client such as Visual Studio with GitHub Copilot can call those tools during an agent session. The server might read files, inspect a Git repository, query a service, or perform an action. MCP compatibility alone does not define what the server may access; that comes from its implementation, launch arguments, credentials, and the client’s approval policies.
Windows developers normally encounter two distinct setup surfaces:
- Client configuration: add a local or remote server to an MCP-capable application such as Visual Studio.
- Windows on-device registration: register a connector so Windows can discover it and run it through the operating system’s agent pathway.
These routes are not interchangeable. A configuration that works in Visual Studio does not automatically make a server available through the Windows registry, and a Windows connector does not automatically appear in every coding client.

Visual Studio and GitHub Copilot
Microsoft’s Visual Studio documentation lists Visual Studio 2026 or Visual Studio 2022 version 17.14 as prerequisites, with the latest servicing release recommended for current MCP features. In Visual Studio, open the agent tool picker, choose the option to add or configure a custom server, and provide a .mcp.json configuration. The client can also connect to a remote server URL. Some remote examples use account authentication, and Visual Studio prompts for approval when an agent wants to call a tool.
Treat the version floor as documentation checked on September 30, 2026, not as a guarantee that every server works in every servicing release. Confirm your installed build and the server’s current requirements before deployment.
Windows on-device registry
Windows documentation describes registration for packaged apps with identity, direct installation of MCP bundles for apps without identity, and manual registration for local or remote servers. The security model differs between them. Directly installed bundles cannot run in the securely contained agent process and are not available through the registry unless connector protections are explicitly reduced. Registry-mediated servers are described as running in a separate contained agent session with access restricted to approved resources.

Microsoft’s May 2025 announcement described an initial private developer preview focused on user control, least privilege, declarative capabilities, and isolation. A November 2025 announcement described native MCP support as a public preview, including registry-discovered connectors and a proxy for authentication, authorization, and audit, plus built-in File Explorer and System Settings connectors. Preview status and operating-system requirements can change, so check current Windows documentation before shipping a connector.
A safe first server: the official filesystem implementation
The official MCP filesystem server is a useful starting point for project assistance because it limits access to directories you explicitly provide. Its tools include read operations and write-capable operations; actions such as overwriting or moving a file are destructive. Give it only the project directory (or a dedicated workspace), not your entire user profile or a drive root.
Example Visual Studio configuration
For a Node package launched with npx, the Windows pattern shown by the official filesystem guidance uses cmd as the executable and passes /c before npx. Replace the illustrative path with a real path on your machine:
{
"servers": {
"project-files": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "cmd",
"args": [
"/c",
"npx",
"-y",
"@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem",
"C:/Users/you/source/my-project"
]
}
}
}
Some clients use a slightly different top-level schema or server key. Keep the command and argument semantics, then follow the schema required by your client. Forward slashes often avoid Windows escaping problems; if you use backslashes in JSON, escape them as \.

Restrict and review capabilities
- Allow only the directories needed for the task.
- Identify which exposed tools are read-only and which can create, overwrite, delete, or move files.
- Keep approval prompts enabled for mutating calls.
- Use a separate test directory when evaluating an unfamiliar package.
- Inspect the publisher, source, package maintenance status, and launch dependencies before installation.
Other useful server patterns
Git repository context
The official catalogue shows a Git server launched with uvx mcp-server-git and a repository path supplied as an argument. This can be a better fit when the agent should work at repository level rather than receive arbitrary access to multiple filesystem locations. Verify the package’s current maintenance, tools, and permissions before enabling it.
uvx mcp-server-git C:/Users/you/source/my-project
Python-based uvx entries should not be wrapped in the Node-specific cmd /c npx pattern. The official catalogue distinguishes these runtimes.
Community Windows desktop automation
A community project named windows-mcp-server advertises Windows UI automation, synthetic mouse and keyboard input, screenshots, window and application control, PowerShell, registry, process, filesystem, and web-scraping tools. Its documentation says several tools have full system access without sandboxing. That breadth may suit a controlled automation experiment, but it creates substantially more exposure than a path-limited filesystem server.

Review its source and policy, run it in a disposable environment, and do not grant sensitive credentials or unrestricted desktop access merely because a client can discover the server. It is community software, not a Microsoft endorsement.

Windows installation checklist
- Identify the client. Record the exact Visual Studio edition and servicing release, or the Windows connector surface you intend to use.
- Choose a narrow server. Start with filesystem or Git access if that is all the task requires.
- Install the runtime. Ensure Node, Python/uv, or .NET is available to the same Windows account and environment used by the client.
- Write the configuration. Use the client’s documented schema, quote paths correctly, and supply only required arguments.
- Launch independently. Run the command in a terminal first. A server that cannot start outside the client will not become reliable inside it.
- Add it to the client. In Visual Studio, use the agent tool picker and custom-server configuration, then restart or reload the client if required.
- Test with a harmless request. Read a known text file or list a test directory before attempting a write operation.
- Inspect approvals and logs. Confirm which tool is being called and what parameters the agent is sending.
Troubleshooting MCP servers on Windows
The client says the command is not found
Check that the runtime is installed for the client’s account and that its PATH is visible to GUI applications. For Node packages, try the Windows wrapper:
cmd /c npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem C:/Users/you/source/my-project
For Python servers, use the documented uvx command instead of adding the Node wrapper.
The server starts, then appears unusable
Run it independently and inspect the client’s logs. The local-server setup guidance documents Claude Desktop logs under %APPDATA%Claudelogs. Other clients provide their own diagnostic location. Restart the client after changing the configuration so it reloads the server definition.

Paths fail or the wrong directory opens
Use an absolute path, quote paths containing spaces, and prefer forward slashes where the client accepts them. In JSON, escape backslashes. Confirm the working directory and the account under which the client launches the process.
A .NET server will not launch
Configure the executable’s full path, or launch the DLL through dotnet with the DLL path as an argument. Verify the installed .NET runtime matches the server target.
Windows security software blocks the process
Security software may block a new executable or a process communicating over stdin/stdout. Follow your organization’s review and allow-list process; do not add broad exclusions as a first fix. Capture the executable path, publisher, hash, and requested network or file permissions for review.
Tools expose more access than expected
Stop the server, remove broad directory arguments, and review its source and manifest. Separate read-only workflows from mutating ones, and require approval for writes, shell commands, registry changes, and process control.

MCP availability does not make a tool safe by default. Before enabling a server, answer these questions:
Rank #3
- Who publishes and maintains it, and is the repository active or archived?
- Which directories, repositories, credentials, network destinations, registry keys, and processes can it access?
- Which tools only read data, and which can change or delete it?
- How are authentication, authorization, audit records, and user approvals handled?
- Does the selected Windows route provide contained execution, and what exceptions apply to direct bundle installation?
- Can you test with non-sensitive data and revoke access quickly?
Microsoft has stated that agents’ access to MCP servers is turned off by default in the May 19, 2025 Windows developer announcement. That default is a useful control, but it does not replace per-server review. Least privilege, isolation, authentication, authorization, and auditing remain deployment responsibilities.
Or skip the browser setup
If your Windows agent workflow needs website screenshots rather than local project files, ScreenshotNeo provides an MCP server and a single HTTP endpoint. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for current parameters. A cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf, so Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client can request captures. Features include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
Plans include 1,000 free shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.
FAQ
Can one MCP server work in Visual Studio and Windows registry connectors?
Not automatically. Each route has its own registration, packaging, transport, containment, and policy requirements. Validate the server against both clients separately.
Should I give a filesystem server access to my whole drive?
No. Supply only the project or workspace directories required for the task, and remove write-capable tools unless the workflow genuinely needs them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs a community desktop server equivalent to the official filesystem server?
No. A desktop automation server may control windows, input, PowerShell, registry, processes, and arbitrary files, while the filesystem server can be constrained to explicitly allowed directories. Their risk profiles are different.
What should I do when a package tutorial is old?
Check the current repository, package status, client schema, runtime requirements, and Windows invocation pattern. Older reference servers may be archived or replaced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do MCP servers require an internet connection?
Local stdio servers can run without an internet connection after their runtimes and packages are installed; remote servers and tools that call online services do require network access.
Can I allow writes temporarily?
Yes, but use a disposable workspace, enable the client’s approval prompts, and remove write-capable arguments or tools after the task.
Where should secrets be stored?
Use the client or operating system’s documented secret and environment-variable mechanism rather than placing API keys directly in a shared configuration file.
