The most useful MCP servers depend on the job you need done. For browser interaction and testing, start by evaluating Playwright MCP; for Chrome-specific inspection, investigate Chrome DevTools MCP; for local Chrome control, Browser MCP; for hosted sessions, Browserbase MCP Server; and for Puppeteer-based workflows, Puppeteer MCP. Developer-tool directories also list servers for Git, MCP development, and repository operations. Treat every directory entry as a lead to verify—not as a security audit or universal endorsement.

What this MCP server list covers

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) ecosystem is broader than browser automation. A directory may put browser control, end-to-end testing, scraping, Chrome debugging, source-control operations, and MCP server development under the same “developer tools” umbrella. Choosing by category name alone can leave an AI agent with the wrong permissions or execution model.

Two useful discovery views are the mcpHQ Awesome MCP Servers repository and MCP.Directory’s browser-automation category. mcpHQ describes its catalog as hand-curated and link-checked, with an interactive map and JSON API. Its browser section includes Browser MCP, Browserbase MCP Server, Chrome DevTools MCP, Playwright MCP, and Puppeteer MCP; its developer section includes MCP Inspector, MCP Git, and the official MCP Registry. MCP.Directory labels entries as official or community and shows examples including Playwright, Chrome DevTools, Puppeteer, Browser MCP, Firecrawl, and Browserbase. Its browser category displayed 76 listings when reviewed on September 29, 2026; that is a volatile directory count, not a census of the MCP ecosystem.

Another developer-tools directory view includes Playwright MCP, GitHub’s MCP server, FastMCP, and MCP SDK entries. These illustrate why you should filter for a concrete capability before installing anything.

Puppeteer MCP Puppeteer-based headless Chrome automation Scripted browser automation Current maintenance, package source, browser lifecycle, and required permissions

The descriptions above come from directory listings except where noted for Playwright. Confirm all setup and capability details in each project’s own repository and documentation before connecting an agent.

Playwright MCP: the most concrete starting point

The official Playwright documentation describes Playwright MCP as an MCP server that lets an LLM interact with web pages through structured accessibility snapshots instead of requiring a vision model. Its documented tools cover navigation, clicking, typing, form interaction, screenshots, keyboard and mouse actions, tabs, network-request inspection, route mocking, console access, and browser storage state. The documentation includes options for Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge.

Standard server configuration

For clients that accept an mcpServers configuration, the documented baseline is:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}

Save this in the format required by your MCP client, then follow that client’s current instructions for loading or restarting servers. The Playwright guide lists setup guidance for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, Cline, Goose, Kiro, Codex, and Copilot CLI; file locations and UI labels can differ between client versions.

Choose a browser-state profile deliberately

Playwright MCP documents persistent mode by default, isolated sessions, and a browser-extension mode. Persistent profiles preserve cookies and login state, which is convenient for authenticated workflows but increases the impact of a compromised or misconfigured server. Use an isolated profile for untrusted sites or reproducible tests. Keep persistent profile directories out of source control and restrict filesystem access to the MCP process.

Understand the unsafe code-execution option

The guide also documents an unsafe code-execution tool for complex Playwright scripts. It runs arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is equivalent to remote-code-execution capability. Enable it only when the MCP client and prompts are trusted, and preferably in a sandboxed environment with narrowly scoped credentials. If your task can be completed with the structured tools, leave arbitrary execution disabled.

How to compare MCP servers before connecting one

1. Define the task, not the category

  • Interaction and testing: favor element references, forms, assertions, screenshots, and repeatable browser contexts.
  • Scraping: check pagination, rate limits, robots or terms constraints, extraction controls, and how data leaves your environment.
  • Live debugging and performance: look for console, network, tracing, and DevTools Protocol access.
  • Hosted browser work: compare remote-session isolation, authentication, geography, and provider retention policies.
  • Source-control work: a GitHub, MCP Git, or repository-focused server may be more appropriate than a browser server.

2. Identify where execution occurs

Local browser servers keep the browser and often the session data on your machine. Headless local processes can be easier to reproduce in CI. Hosted services move execution and potentially sensitive page data to a provider. Record the network destinations, secrets, cookies, downloads, and filesystem paths each option can access.

3. Check the interaction model

Accessibility snapshots expose semantic elements and references to the model and can reduce dependence on vision. Direct browser protocols provide deep inspection. Scripted automation offers flexibility but increases the consequences of arbitrary code. Provider APIs may simplify scaling while adding account, quota, and data-governance requirements.

4. Verify client, transport, and runtime prerequisites

  • Supported MCP clients and whether the client uses stdio or another transport.
  • Runtime requirements such as Node.js, browser binaries, extensions, or a provider account.
  • Package or repository source, version pinning, and update procedure.
  • Required API keys, cookies, OAuth scopes, and where they are stored.
  • Whether the server can write files, launch subprocesses, alter remote state, or execute arbitrary code.

5. Review trust and maintenance signals

Directory labels help with discovery but do not prove security, active maintenance, or suitability. mcpHQ says it reviews and link-checks entries; MCP.Directory marks entries official or community. Those labels are starting points. Inspect the underlying repository owner, recent releases or commits, license, issue activity, documented permissions, data flow, and response to security reports. Pin a known version where your client permits it, and test upgrades in a disposable environment.

A practical evaluation workflow

  1. Write a one-sentence job definition. For example: “Run authenticated checkout tests in Chromium without exposing my daily browser profile.”
  2. Choose two candidates with different trade-offs. A local Playwright server and a hosted Browserbase server answer different operational needs.
  3. Run a harmless test site first. Confirm navigation, element targeting, screenshots, downloads, and shutdown behavior before adding credentials.
  4. Inspect logs and outbound traffic. Verify what prompts, page content, cookies, screenshots, and files leave the machine.
  5. Test failure handling. Interrupt a page load, revoke a key, close the browser, and restart the client. Document whether sessions and temporary files are cleaned up.
  6. Lock down production use. Use a dedicated OS user or container, least-privilege credentials, isolated profiles, network egress rules, and an upgrade review.

Common failure modes and fixes

The client cannot start the server

Confirm that npx and Node.js are on the client’s PATH, that the package name is spelled exactly, and that the client configuration uses valid JSON. Run the command manually in a terminal to capture stderr, then restart the MCP client after correcting the file path.

The browser opens but actions target the wrong element

Accessibility snapshots can change as a page rerenders. Ask the model to refresh the snapshot, prefer stable labels or roles, and wait for a specific selector or state before clicking. Avoid brittle coordinates unless the workflow genuinely requires them.

Login state disappears

Check whether the server is using an isolated profile or a new temporary context. Persistent mode preserves cookies and login state; isolated mode intentionally does not. Never copy a production profile into an untrusted environment.

Pages fail in headless or hosted mode

Look for bot checks, geolocation restrictions, missing browser binaries, blocked third-party resources, or provider egress limits. Reproduce with a public test page, then add the minimum required headers, storage state, or region configuration.

A complex script is blocked

That may be intentional if unsafe code execution is disabled. Prefer the structured Playwright tools. If arbitrary JavaScript is unavoidable, enable it only for a trusted client inside a sandbox with disposable credentials and review the script before execution.

For screenshot jobs, use a purpose-built API

MCP browser servers can take screenshots as part of an interactive workflow, but a dedicated API is simpler when your input is a URL and your output is an image or PDF. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Consent banners and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Are directory listings safe to install?

No listing is a substitute for reviewing the project’s code, permissions, maintenance, and data flow. Treat directories as discovery indexes.

Is Playwright MCP limited to Chromium?

No. Its documented configuration includes Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a persistent browser profile in CI?

Usually not. Isolated, disposable profiles make CI runs more reproducible and reduce exposure of reusable cookies.

When does a hosted browser make more sense than a local server?

Consider hosted execution when you need managed browser infrastructure or remote sessions, but verify account, authentication, data-residency, retention, and network requirements first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do MCP directory counts change?

They can change as entries are added, removed, or reclassified; the 76-item MCP.Directory figure is explicitly a September 29, 2026 snapshot.

Can one MCP server cover every developer-tool task?

No. Browser interaction, debugging, scraping, source control, and MCP development expose different tools and permissions, so selecting by task is safer than selecting by a broad category.
