The MCG Health data-breach lawsuit was real, but it is no longer an unresolved case. An unauthorized party accessed systems containing information tied to approximately 1.1 million people. MCG agreed to an approximately $8.8 million settlement, which the federal court finally approved on October 9, 2024. The settlement claim deadline—September 30, 2024—has passed.
What happened to MCG Health’s systems?
MCG Health is a healthcare software and data-services company that supplies clinical decision-support tools and patient-care guidelines to healthcare providers and health plans. In breach notifications, MCG was described as a HIPAA business associate, meaning it handled protected health information for healthcare organizations.
Settlement materials stated that MCG discovered or determined on or about March 25, 2022, that an unauthorized party had accessed its systems. A complaint alleged that files may have been acquired as early as February 2020, although the exact intrusion date was not established. MCG’s customers and affected organizations began sending notices in 2022.

The Maine attorney general’s notice listed 1,100,000 affected people. That figure describes people whose information was held in or accessed from MCG systems; it does not mean every person had every listed data element exposed or that all suffered identity theft.

What did the lawsuits allege?
Multiple proposed class actions were filed after the 2022 disclosures. Plaintiffs alleged that MCG failed to use reasonable safeguards for sensitive personal and health information and delayed notifying affected people. One complaint alleged that MCG learned of the incident on March 25, 2022, but did not notify individuals until June 10, 2022.

The principal consolidated matter was In re MCG Health Data Security Issue Litigation, Case No. 2:22-cv-00849-RSM-DWC, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Other related filings included Strecker v. MCG Health, LLC, Case No. 2:22-cv-00862. These docket numbers refer to related litigation over the same underlying incident, not separate unresolved lawsuits today.

- An alternative cash payment; and
- Credit-monitoring benefits under the settlement terms.
“Up to” was important: $10,000 was a ceiling for qualifying, documented extraordinary losses, not a guaranteed payment to every person. Payments could also be reduced or prorated according to the claims process. Approval materials separately identified approximately $2.93 million in attorneys’ fees and costs; that amount was not an additional payment promised to each claimant.
The settlement was a negotiated compromise, not a jury verdict. It did not establish that MCG caused identity theft, that every record was misused, or that MCG admitted wrongdoing.
Can you still file an MCG settlement claim?
Ordinarily, no. The court-authorized claim form and official settlement website state that the September 30, 2024 filing deadline has passed. The fact that final approval was reported in October 2024 does not reopen that earlier claims period.
