The Marantz SR5008 is still a capable used 7.2-channel AV receiver, but it is not a modern HDMI hub. Its strengths are seven-channel amplification, Audyssey MultEQ XT, extensive analog and digital connectivity, 7.2 pre-outs, and legacy network playback. Its weaknesses are equally important in 2026: no Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, no HDMI 2.1, no 4K/120, no eARC, no 8K, and uncertain support for older streaming services.
Buy it only when the price is substantially below a newer receiver and your system is mainly 5.1 or 7.1 audio. For a modern console, eARC television, or Atmos home theater, a newer AVR is the better choice.
Marantz SR5008: the short verdict
The SR5008 is a 2013-generation, seven-channel network AV receiver that remains attractive as a used amplifier and audio processor. It supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Audyssey MultEQ XT, AirPlay, DLNA, USB playback, 7.2-channel pre-outs, and two subwoofer outputs.
Its advertised 4K capability needs careful interpretation. The receiver supports early 4K pass-through and scaling, but Marantz documentation does not list HDMI 2.1, 4K at 120 Hz, 8K, eARC, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+. Treat it as a legacy HDMI switch or an audio-focused receiver, not as a current all-in-one solution.

Marantz lists the model in its archive and support ecosystem. It is no longer a current model, and condition matters more than the original specification sheet when buying used.
What is the Marantz SR5008?
The SR5008 is a full-size 7.2-channel network AV receiver. It has seven internal amplifier channels, processing for a 7.2-channel system, two subwoofer outputs, Zone 2 pre-out connectivity, and 7.2-channel multichannel pre-outs.
European documentation identifies black and silver-gold finishes. Regional versions may use suffixes such as /N1B or /N1SG; confirm the exact model and voltage before buying an imported unit.

Do not interpret the headline 180 W per channel as continuous seven-channel output. That figure is measured at 6 ohms, 1 kHz, with one channel driven and 1% distortion. The 100 W figure—8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, two channels driven—is the more useful comparison with conventional full-band stereo ratings.

Room correction is handled by Audyssey MultEQ XT, with Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume also included. The receiver provides bass redirection, variable crossover settings, speaker A/B assignment, and supported bi-amping configurations. A 7.1-channel analog input is useful for older disc players and external surround processors.

No Dolby Atmos or DTS:X
The official SR5008 feature tables list Dolby Pro Logic IIz and earlier Dolby and DTS formats, but not Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Its assignable speaker terminals should not be mistaken for object-based immersive-audio decoding.
4K, HDMI, and modern TV compatibility
The SR5008 supports 3D video pass-through, early 4K pass-through, HDMI-to-HDMI scaling up to 4K, analog-to-HDMI scaling up to 4K, composite-to-HDMI conversion, component-to-HDMI conversion, HDMI-ARC, HDMI-CEC, HDMI standby pass-through, and an HDMI graphical interface.
That is useful with older 1080p and early 4K equipment. It does not make the receiver equivalent to a current HDMI 2.1 AVR. Marantz’s original documentation does not list:
- HDMI 2.1
- 4K at 120 Hz
- 8K
- eARC
- VRR
- ALLM
- Dolby Vision
- HDR10+
Do not assume that a seller’s “4K receiver” description means modern HDR or gaming compatibility. It may refer only to basic pass-through or scaling. The exact source, display, HDCP version, resolution, refresh rate, and cable path determine whether a particular setup works.

Using it with a modern 4K TV
A practical workaround is to connect modern sources directly to the television, then send television audio to the SR5008 through optical output where the TV supports the required format:

- Connect the console, streaming box, or UHD player directly to the TV.
- Connect the TV’s optical output to an SR5008 optical input.
- Use the receiver’s HDMI inputs for compatible legacy sources.
- Use HDMI-ARC only if the older ARC behavior meets your needs; it is not eARC.
This arrangement can sacrifice newer audio formats and may introduce lip-sync, volume-control, or input-switching complications. An external HDMI switch, splitter, or audio extractor may help, but compatibility varies and can introduce additional HDCP and handshake problems.
Gaming
The SR5008 is reasonable for older consoles, 1080p systems, or a budget setup in which the console connects directly to the TV. It is a poor match for a system that requires 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, HDMI 2.1 switching, or simple modern console-to-TV integration.
Pre-outs: the SR5008’s biggest used-market advantage
The receiver has 7.2-channel multichannel pre-outs and two subwoofer outputs. You can connect external power amplifiers, use additional amplification with demanding speakers, or integrate a separate stereo amplifier into a larger system.

Pre-outs improve the receiver’s upgrade flexibility, but they do not add Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI 2.1, eARC, or other missing features. They make the SR5008 more capable as an amplifier and processor—not newer as a video platform.
Networking, USB, and Bluetooth
The SR5008 uses wired Ethernet rather than built-in Wi-Fi. Its original documentation lists DLNA 1.5, AirPlay, USB and iPod/iPhone compatibility, Internet radio through vTuner, Spotify, last.fm, and Marantz remote apps for Android and iOS.
Supported network formats include MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, and WAV. FLAC and WAV playback is listed up to 192 kHz/24-bit, while ALAC is listed up to 96 kHz/24-bit. FLAC and WAV gapless playback and JPEG photo streaming are also documented.

These are original hardware and software capabilities, not a guarantee that every cloud service, radio directory, or old mobile app still works in 2026. For dependable current streaming, an external streamer connected by HDMI, optical, coaxial, or analog audio is usually the safer approach.

How to set up the SR5008
- Inspect and reset it. Confirm the regional voltage, check for previous owner settings, and verify the remote, microphone, antennas, and power cable.
- Connect the speakers. Match polarity, use appropriate wiring, and do not connect the SR5008 speaker outputs to another amplifier’s outputs.
- Connect the display and sources. Use the receiver for compatible legacy HDMI sources. Connect modern high-bandwidth sources directly to the TV when necessary.
- Connect Ethernet. Do not expect built-in Wi-Fi.
- Run Audyssey MultEQ XT. Put the supplied microphone at ear height, keep the room quiet, and follow the on-screen measurement positions.
- Verify the results. Check speaker size, crossover, distances, levels, subwoofer operation, and listening modes after calibration.
- Configure ARC and HDMI-CEC only if needed. CEC can cause unexpected power or input switching; disable it if it makes the system unstable.
- Test every source. Confirm video resolution, audio format, lip-sync, and subwoofer output.
- Set up Zone 2 last. Zone 2 is not a completely independent modern streaming system. Availability depends on the input and signal type; the product information identifies two-channel PCM support for certain digital sources.

Do not rely on a seller’s statement that the receiver is merely “tested.” Ask exactly what was tested and, if possible, connect your own source and display.
Test these functions
- Every HDMI input and the HDMI output
- Video pass-through with your intended source and TV
- All analog inputs
- Optical and coaxial digital inputs
- USB playback
- Ethernet networking
- FM tuner and antenna connections
- All seven amplifier channels
- Both subwoofer outputs
- 7.2 pre-outs
- Zone 2
- Speaker A/B assignment
- Remote-control response
- Front-panel display and buttons
- Audyssey microphone input and calibration
Look for overheating, blocked vents, corrosion, liquid damage, intermittent audio, relay clicking, unusual fan noise, and HDMI dropouts. Community reports include anecdotal claims of HDMI-board failure on SR5008 units, but that is not a verified model-wide failure rate. The practical lesson is to test every HDMI input rather than assuming that one working input proves the board is healthy.

- AM antenna where applicable
- Power cable
- Manuals or original packaging
The receiver may operate without every accessory, but a missing microphone prevents normal automated calibration and a missing remote makes advanced setup more difficult.

What is a fair used price?
Observed international asking prices on HifiShark in early 2026 ranged broadly from about €175 to €500, with many examples around €200–€350. These are market signals, not completed-sale averages, and local prices vary with shipping, taxes, accessories, condition, and return rights.
Pay a premium for a fully tested unit with the remote and Audyssey microphone. A cheap, untested receiver with HDMI problems can quickly become worse value than a newer model with a warranty or return period.
Marantz SR5008 versus newer options
Marantz SR5015
The SR5015 is a newer 7.2-channel Marantz receiver with modern HDMI/video support, HEOS, and Dolby Atmos-era processing. Observed used listings were commonly around €485–€820 in the markets covered, although regional versions and condition varied substantially. It is the more sensible choice when you want to stay with Marantz but need newer connectivity.
Marantz Cinema 70s
The Cinema 70s offers a current-generation feature set in a slim chassis, including modern HDMI and immersive-audio support. It is better for compact systems and current TV or console compatibility, but it is not automatically the best replacement if you prioritize the SR5008’s full-size chassis, pre-outs, or bargain used pricing.
Current Marantz AV receivers
Current models provide warranty availability and, on applicable receivers, modern HDMI, eARC, 8K/4K support, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and HEOS. Consult Marantz’s current AV receiver range when modern video and software support are more important than low used cost.
Keep the SR5008 and bypass its video section
If the receiver’s amplification and audio processing still suit you, connecting modern video directly to the TV—or adding an external HDMI solution—may cost less than replacing it. The trade-offs are extra remotes, possible HDCP handshakes, lip-sync issues, and uncertain support for particular HDR and audio combinations.
Who should buy the SR5008?
Buy it when:
- You need an inexpensive 5.1 or 7.1 receiver.
- Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are not priorities.
- Your sources are mainly 1080p or legacy 4K.
- You value analog inputs, Audyssey MultEQ XT, and 7.2 pre-outs.
- You can test the unit or obtain a meaningful return period.
- Wired Ethernet or an external streamer is acceptable.
Avoid it when:
- You need 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, HDMI 2.1, eARC, or 8K.
- You want Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
- Built-in Wi-Fi and current streaming services are essential.
- The unit is untested, lacks key accessories, or has unstable HDMI.
- A newer AVR costs only modestly more.
