What the team news looked like before kickoff
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s side arrived after the 2024–25 domestic season, making selection and rotation a live question. The confirmed team sheet and match report resolve some of those pre-match uncertainties: Cherki, Foden, Doku and Rico Lewis started; Rodri and Haaland came on as substitutes. Foden and Doku scored. Haaland’s eventual substitute appearance should not be mistaken for a start.
Wydad AC
Wydad had appointed Mohamed Amine Benhachem in May 2025, replacing Rhulani Mokwena. Veteran winger Nordin Amrabat had joined and was expected to make his competitive debut for the club. Mohamed Rayhi was a key attacking threat, while captain and central defender Jamal Harkass offered leadership and a potential set-piece threat. Amrabat started, as did Cassius Mailula. Rayhi replaced Mailula at halftime, and Thembinkosi Lorch was among Wydad’s attacking options. The official report records the final lineups and substitutions.
The matchup: City’s control against Wydad’s resistance
The pre-match question was whether Wydad could stay compact through City’s possession and high press, then use transitions or set pieces to threaten. City had greater individual depth and technical quality; Wydad’s possible counterweights were cohesion, physicality and experience. The midday kickoff in Philadelphia also raised the prospect of difficult heat, while City’s post-season timing made rotation a reasonable consideration.

The game followed the broad outline of that matchup: City scored early and controlled much of the contest, while Wydad had periods of resistance. City recorded six shots on target to Wydad’s two, according to City’s official match statistics.
What happened
Phil Foden scored in the second minute and Jérémy Doku added a goal in the 42nd as Manchester City won 2–0. Rico Lewis was sent off in the 88th minute. FIFA’s report lists an attendance of 37,446. The win gave City three points in the opening round of Group G.

Why this was a significant group opener
The 2025 competition was the first expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup—not the first global club championship in football history. City qualified as the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League winners; Wydad qualified as 2021–22 CAF Champions League winners. Group G also included Juventus and Al Ain, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage. The result therefore mattered as the opening step in a four-team group, not as a knockout elimination game.
