Why there was no VAR
VAR was not used for Manchester United v Leicester in the 2024–25 FA Cup fourth round. The Football Association introduced VAR in the competition from the fifth round onwards, so this match did not have a VAR team reviewing incidents.
That meant:
- the on-field referee and assistants made the match decisions;
- there was no video review of goals, penalties, red cards or mistaken identity;
- the referee could not be sent to a pitch-side monitor;
- there was no separate VAR official to name.
This applies specifically to the 7 February 2025 FA Cup fourth-round match. It should not be confused with Manchester United’s Premier League meeting with Leicester on 2 April 2022, when Andre Marriner was referee and Michael Oliver was VAR.
Do not confuse this with the October Carabao Cup match
Manchester United and Leicester also met at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on 30 October 2024. That was a different fixture: it kicked off at 7:45pm GMT and was carried by Sky Sports+. The Carabao Cup match also had its own competition rules, including a direct penalty shoot-out if the score was level after 90 minutes. Those details do not describe the February 2025 FA Cup tie.
The competition, date and venue should always be stated together when referring to “Man Utd v Leicester”.
