It supports Android 9 and later, offers a continuing free scanner plus free SMS protection and Scam Guard, and reserves always-on malware, ransomware, and safe-browsing protection for paid plans. Download it only from Google Play. It can add useful protection, but it does not replace Android updates, Play Protect, careful permissions, strong passwords, or multifactor authentication.
What “Malwarebytes for Android OS” means today
“Malwarebytes for Android” is the common legacy/search name for Malwarebytes Mobile Security for Android. It is not a desktop companion or a help-page fragment: it is a separate Android app published by Malwarebytes through Google Play. The app scans installed apps and files, warns about malicious websites and scams, and can add real-time protection, ransomware protection, a VPN and privacy tools depending on the plan, account, region and app version.
Use the official Malwarebytes Android page or the Google Play listing. A similarly named “cracked,” “modded” or premium-unlocked APK is not an equivalent download and may itself be malicious.
Is Malwarebytes for Android legitimate?
Yes. The Play listing is associated with Malwarebytes, the vendor provides a support system and installation documentation, and Malwarebytes directs Android users to Google Play. That establishes the app’s legitimacy—not the legitimacy of every website or APK using the Malwarebytes name.

Malwarebytes also cites an Android 360° result from MRG Effitas and says its product detected all samples in the cited test. Treat that as a result from a particular sample set, configuration and test period, not proof that it is universally the best Android antivirus. See the testing organization at MRG Effitas and check the underlying report methodology before comparing products.
Current features and what is free
Malwarebytes’ current Android feature matrix separates the continuing free tier from paid protection. Marketing pages also show optional VPN, cleaner, digital-footprint and identity features; those are not automatically included with every installation.

Is the free version really free?
The continuing free Android tier includes the scanner, SMS protection and Scam Guard according to Malwarebytes’ current table. The Google Play listing separately advertises a seven-day trial of advanced features. A trial is not the same as permanent free access: read the renewal date, billing frequency, price and cancellation terms shown in Google Play before starting it.

During onboarding, the app can show a pricing page. That does not necessarily remove the free scanner; look for the option to continue without subscribing. Malwarebytes’ pricing page advertises a 60-day money-back guarantee, but the exact offer and purchase channel matter. See Malwarebytes pricing for current plan terms rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
Supported devices and Android versions
Malwarebytes’ requirements documentation, current as of August 11, 2026, lists Android 9 through Android 17. An active internet connection is required to install the app. Malwarebytes v5 is explicitly not supported on ChromeOS, even when a Chromebook has Google Play.
Manufacturer Android variants, work-managed phones, tablets, restricted Play installations and country/account availability can change the experience. Check the current system requirements if your device is unusual or below Android 9.
How to install it safely
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Malwarebytes Mobile Security and confirm the publisher before installing.
- Tap Install, then Open and Get Started.
- If you already subscribe, choose I have a Subscription and sign in to activate it.
- Allow requested security updates, then review the plan and trial screen.
- From the dashboard, open each protection and enable it; grant only the Android permissions needed for that feature.
- For the VPN, open VPN, tap Activate or Upgrade, and complete Android’s VPN permission dialog.
The official walkthrough is Malwarebytes’ Android installation guide. If the app is missing, confirm Android 9 or newer, update Google Play Store and Google Play Services, check country availability, and ask an employer or school administrator whether device policy blocks installation. Do not substitute an unofficial APK.

Running a scan and handling a detection
Button names can vary by release, so use the current dashboard labels:
- Open Malwarebytes and select the scan or security feature.
- Start a threat scan and wait for it to finish.
- Review the detection name, package or file and source before taking action.
- Quarantine or remove a confirmed unwanted item; restart if Android or Malwarebytes requests it.
- If removal is incomplete, uninstall the associated app through Settings and run another scan.
- If the app had accessibility, notification, banking, password or messaging access, change important passwords from a clean device and review account activity.
A detection can be malware, adware or a potentially unwanted app; a blocked installation, a website warning and a compromised online account are different events. Do not delete a banking, business or system app solely because of a vague label. Record the detection and package name and contact Malwarebytes support if you suspect a false positive.

The Play listing says Malwarebytes uses Android’s AccessibilityService API to monitor on-screen activity for malicious apps and scams. That can help a security tool recognize deceptive interactions, but accessibility access is highly sensitive: apps with it may inspect screen content and interact with controls. Grant it only to the official Play-installed app, understand which protection it enables, and revoke it later in Android Settings if you no longer want that feature. Wording and availability differ by Android version and manufacturer.
Google Play’s Data Safety section says the app may collect personal information, files and documents and other data types, with data encrypted in transit and deletion requests available. Malwarebytes’ Android page also makes a no-logging statement about VPN browsing. Those statements address different layers: VPN no-logging language does not mean the entire app collects no data. Avoid uploading passwords, one-time codes, payment-card details, medical information or unrelated private conversations to Scam Guard.

Scam Guard, SMS and the VPN
Using Scam Guard responsibly
Use Scam Guard as a second opinion, not an oracle. Verify a message through the company’s official app or a phone number obtained independently, and never disclose a one-time authentication code because a text or caller requests it. Scam analysis cannot reverse a completed transfer or account takeover.
What the VPN can and cannot do
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service and can reduce exposure on some untrusted networks while obscuring your IP address from websites. It does not prevent phishing, stop a malicious app abusing permissions, block every tracker or guarantee anonymity. Android generally permits one VPN-based service at a time, so another VPN, firewall, ad blocker, DNS filter or corporate agent may conflict with it.
When Malwarebytes is a good fit—and when it is not
- Good fit: you want a recognizable second-opinion scanner, additional scam or web protection, or one vendor across Android and other platforms; you accept subscriptions and sensitive permissions.
- Poor fit: you want a completely free always-on antivirus, only need occasional scans, object to accessibility access, already use another VPN/security suite, need enterprise device management, or use an Android version below 9 or unsupported ChromeOS.
Third-party protection adds coverage but also permissions, notifications, battery/storage use and subscription cost. Lower-risk users may prefer Google Play Protect, updates and careful behavior; people who frequently sideload apps or face heavy scam exposure may value the extra layer.
If symptoms continue after a clean scan
A clean result does not rule out browser notification abuse, an aggressive advertising app, a compromised account, a new undetected threat or scam messages that require no malware. Review recently installed apps; remove unfamiliar accessibility, notification, device-admin, VPN and overlay permissions; check browser site notifications; update Android and apps; change important passwords from a clean device; enable multifactor authentication; and contact your bank through an official channel if financial data may be exposed. Consider a factory reset only after preserving necessary data and confirming account recovery details.

Malwarebytes for Android is a real, current and feature-rich mobile-security app. Its free scanner is useful for second-opinion checks, while paid plans make sense only if you need always-on, ransomware or safe-browsing protection and accept the subscription, permissions and plan limits. Keep Google Play Protect enabled, install updates, avoid unofficial APKs and treat every scam warning—or lack of one—as a prompt to verify, not a guarantee of safety.
