A Malwarebytes alert for a randomly named .tmp file is not, by itself, proof that Windows is still infected. Temp folders are used by legitimate installers and applications, but malware also stages files there. Leave the item quarantined, record the detection details, run a full follow-up scan, and check whether the alert returns after a restart. A one-time, successfully quarantined file with no persistence indicators is materially different from a file that reappears or was executed.

The quoted “resolved” Malwarebytes forum case is not available as a verifiable original log. The secondary account at PositionIsEverything therefore cannot establish the exact malware name, hash, process, or final state of that individual computer. The steps below separate what a Temp-folder alert can show from what still needs checking.

What a malicious .tmp detection actually tells you

.tmp is a file extension, not a malware classification. Names such as tmp1234.tmp or generated installer identifiers can be harmless working files, malicious payloads, or fragments left by a blocked download.

Situation What it suggests What to do
Blocked before execution The security product stopped the file at download or launch time; this is encouraging but does not explain the source. Identify the originating browser, installer, or document and complete a full scan.
Detected and quarantined The file was isolated from normal execution. Keep it quarantined while reviewing related detections and persistence.
Deleted successfully The individual artifact was removed. Verify with a full scan and reboot; deletion alone does not rule out persistence.
Removal failed The running system could not remove or access the item. Retry after reboot or use Safe Mode/offline scanning, especially if other symptoms exist.
Detection returns after reboot A process, task, extension, service, or new download may be recreating it. Investigate the recreating source rather than deleting each copy.

The full path matters, but it is not a verdict. Common locations include %TEMP%, C:Users<username>AppDataLocalTemp, and C:WindowsTemp. A user Temp directory can contain a serious payload, while a legitimate installer can create executable files in Windows Temp.

Record the alert before cleaning anything

Take a screenshot or copy the Malwarebytes history entry before removing records. Preserve:

  • the exact detection name;
  • the complete path and filename;
  • the date and time;
  • whether Malwarebytes said blocked, quarantined, deleted, or failed;
  • any process, module, URL, or related item shown; and
  • whether other detections appeared in the same scan.

Do not open, run, rename, restore, or execute the file to “test” it. Do not casually upload a suspicious sample from the affected computer. Close the browser, installer, archive utility, or Office application that may have created the file, and reboot if Malwarebytes requests it.

How to read the Malwarebytes removal result

Review the result together with the path, timing, and repeat behavior. A generic one-time detection is inconclusive without that context. Look for related evidence in:

Do not attribute a specific malware family or claim that the original forum computer was clean unless the underlying log actually shows it. The older bootkit discussion at TechSpot illustrates why process context, reboot behavior, quarantine results, and persistence checks matter more than a filename alone.

Safe immediate-response checklist

  1. Leave the detected item in Malwarebytes quarantine.
  2. Record its name, path, time, and action.
  3. Close the likely source application.
  4. Update Malwarebytes, Windows, and your primary antivirus.
  5. Run a full system scan, not only a quick scan.
  6. Restart when prompted.
  7. Check whether the same detection returns.
  8. Use a reputable second-opinion scanner when the alert was repeated, the file executed, or the source was an untrusted download.
  9. Review startup items, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, and recent installations.
  10. Only then remove ordinary disposable Temp contents if desired.

Cleaning Temp files without confusing cleanup with remediation

Use Windows’ built-in cleanup first: open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files and review the categories, or enable Storage Sense. Disk Cleanup remains available on many Windows installations. Clear browser cache and download history through the browser’s own settings.

Close browsers, installers, Office applications, and archive tools first. Some files will be locked or recreated; a failed deletion is not proof of malware. Do not force-delete a file that Malwarebytes has identified but has not yet logged or quarantined, and do not delete unrelated system folders because their names look temporary.

Temp-folder cleanup removes disposable working files. Malwarebytes quarantine is a separate evidence and containment store. Keeping an item in quarantine prevents normal execution; deleting it from quarantine permanently discards that retained evidence. Restore a file only after a well-supported false-positive determination from the software publisher or security vendor—not merely because its name resembles a legitimate installer.

How to verify that Windows is clean

  1. Update Malwarebytes and Microsoft Defender or the active antivirus.
  2. Run a full scan and allow remediation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run a second-opinion scan if the event involved execution, scripts, a suspicious attachment, or repeated alerts. Options include ESET Online Scanner and Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  5. Inspect extensions, notification permissions, proxy settings, startup applications, scheduled tasks, services, and recently installed programs.
  6. Watch for recurring pop-ups or redirects, unknown processes, unusual resource use, disabled protection, or unexplained outbound activity.

A clean follow-up scan means the scanners found no current known threats. It is strong evidence, not mathematical proof that every compromise has been ruled out.

When a Temp alert requires escalation

  • The detection returns after reboot or appears in several directories.
  • The file executed before detection, or Malwarebytes reports a rootkit, bootkit, credential stealer, ransomware, or remote-access tool.
  • Unknown scheduled tasks, services, drivers, or startup commands are present.
  • Antivirus protection was disabled, or the computer shows persistent redirects, pop-ups, instability, or unusual network activity.
  • Removal fails repeatedly.
  • The user installed cracked software, a keygen, an untrusted extension, or an unsolicited attachment.

If execution or credential theft is plausible, use a known-clean device to change email and financial-account passwords first, then enable multifactor authentication. For a business computer, preserve timestamps, alert IDs, logs, and endpoint telemetry before cleanup and follow the organization’s incident-response procedure.

If Windows is unstable, Malwarebytes cannot remove the item, or a bootkit/rootkit is suspected, use an offline or rescue-environment scan instead of repeatedly deleting files from the running system. Microsoft Defender’s consumer security baseline is documented at Microsoft’s Windows security page; it is included with supported Windows editions rather than requiring a separate consumer subscription.

Prevention after the incident

  • Keep Windows, browsers, applications, and security definitions patched.
  • Download software from the publisher or a reputable store.
  • Remove extensions you do not recognize and limit website notification permissions.
  • Keep real-time protection enabled and use a standard user account for routine work.
  • Treat cracks, keygens, unofficial mods, and unsolicited attachments as high risk.
  • Avoid running multiple unfamiliar real-time antivirus products simultaneously; use an on-demand second opinion when needed.

Malwarebytes remains relevant when you need its quarantine and scanning workflow or premium real-time features; see the official Malwarebytes site for current editions. A paid suite is not mandatory after every isolated, successfully quarantined Temp-file alert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I delete the .tmp file manually?

No. Leave the detected item quarantined and preserve its alert details. Manual deletion does not show whether another process or persistence mechanism remains.

Can I empty the Windows Temp folder?

You may remove ordinary disposable contents with Windows cleanup tools after closing applications and preserving the security evidence. Locked or recreated files are normal, and this cleanup is not malware remediation.

What if Malwarebytes detects the file again?

Treat recurrence as evidence of an active source or persistence. Record the new path and process, run full and second-opinion scans, and inspect startup items, scheduled tasks, services, and browser extensions.

What if another antivirus says the file is clean?

Disagreement can indicate a false positive, different detection rules, or a changed file. Do not restore it solely because one scanner is clean; verify provenance and seek confirmation from the software publisher or security vendor.

When should I use an offline scanner?

Use one when removal repeatedly fails, Windows is unstable, or a rootkit or bootkit is suspected. An offline environment can inspect threats that resist removal while Windows is running.

The Bottom Line

A single .tmp detection that Malwarebytes quarantines successfully, does not return after a reboot, and is followed by clean full scans may have been a contained artifact. Repeated alerts, execution, persistence indicators, credential-theft risk, or failed removal require deeper investigation rather than more Temp-folder deletion.
