Windows 11 can try to return windows to their previous monitors when you disconnect and reconnect a display. Turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection in Settings. It is useful for a laptop that moves between docked and undocked use, but it does not save a complete desktop layout or guarantee every app will return to the exact same size and position.
Turn on window-location memory
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Display.
- Scroll to and expand Multiple displays.
- Turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- For a typical dock-and-undock workflow, also consider turning on Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected.
Microsoft describes these options for docking and undocking: Windows minimizes windows on a disconnected display and attempts to restore them to their previous positions when that display is connected again. The setting is in System > Display > Multiple displays, not in Personalization or the Snap settings.
The minimize option is separate from location memory. Turn it off if you would rather have windows remain available on the active display when you unplug a monitor. Your preference depends on how you use the laptop; neither option guarantees identical behavior with every app, dock, or display.
What Windows remembers—and what it does not
The built-in option primarily remembers a window’s association with a monitor and its general placement when monitor connections change. It is not a universal save-and-restore feature for your whole desktop.

- Monitor and general location: This is the intended use: Windows attempts to put affected windows back where they were when the display returns.
- Exact window size: Not guaranteed. Maximized or snapped windows, app-specific sizing, resolution, scaling, and the available screen area can all affect the result.
- A saved arrangement of many apps: Windows does not provide named layouts such as “Work” and “Travel” through this checkbox.
- Closed apps, documents, or browser tabs: Location memory cannot reopen a closed app or restore its contents. That depends on each app’s own startup or session-recovery features.
Microsoft documents the intended docking behavior, not guaranteed restoration after every reboot, sleep-and-wake cycle, monitor power-off, or hardware change. Treat those as separate situations: a display may be detected differently depending on the monitor, cable, dock, adapter, and graphics hardware.
Check the display arrangement before testing
A correct setting can appear unreliable if Windows’ picture of the monitors does not match your desk.

- Open Settings > System > Display and select Identify to see the number shown on each physical screen.
- Drag the display rectangles so they match the monitors’ actual left-to-right and up-and-down positions.
- Select the display you want as the primary display and check its resolution and scaling.
- Press Windows + P and select Extend if you want a separate desktop across multiple monitors. Duplicate and PC-screen-only modes do not provide that extended workspace.
Microsoft’s multi-monitor guidance covers identifying and arranging displays as well as the Windows + P display modes. A changed resolution or scaling, a rearranged display, or a dock that reports monitors in a different order can make an otherwise enabled setting seem inconsistent.
For repeatable sizes and grids: use PowerToys FancyZones
If you need specific columns, a custom grid, or predictable window sizes, try FancyZones, a window-layout utility included in Microsoft PowerToys. It lets you define zones for monitors and place windows into them. Its options can help keep windows in zones when resolution or zone layouts change. PowerToys is free and open source.

- Install PowerToys through Microsoft’s official distribution channels and open PowerToys Settings.
- Select FancyZones and turn it on.
- Open the layout editor, select the monitor you want to configure, then choose or create a layout. The default editor shortcut is Windows + Shift + `; you can change it in PowerToys Settings.
- Review options such as Keep windows in their zones when the screen resolution changes and the setting for matching a zone’s new size and position when its layout changes.
- Move application windows into the zones. Review FancyZones’ options for newly created windows if you want them placed according to a preferred rule.
FancyZones manages zones and window placement; it should not be treated as a snapshot that reopens every application and document. Its keyboard behavior can depend on the configured override mode, so check the FancyZones settings rather than assuming every Windows-arrow shortcut will act the same way.
If windows still move, narrow down the cause
- Check the basics again: Confirm the display rectangles match the physical setup and that Windows + P is set to Extend.
- Test one change at a time: Try disconnecting and reconnecting the same monitor or dock. Avoid changing the cable, dock, monitor order, and resolution all at once.
- Check detection and display settings: A USB-C adapter or dock may present a monitor differently after reconnecting. Note whether resolution, scaling, or monitor order has changed.
- Separate Windows behavior from app behavior: Test with a simple app such as Notepad. If other windows return but one app does not, check that application’s own startup or window settings.
- Consider the disconnect option: If windows minimize in a way that disrupts your workflow, turn off Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. This does not turn off the separate location-memory setting.
- Update relevant software: If the problem persists, check for Windows updates, graphics-driver updates, and dock firmware or driver updates from the relevant manufacturers.
- Use a zone layout if precision matters: Configure FancyZones rather than relying only on Windows’ general location memory.
When a window lands on a connected but unexpected monitor, select it and press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows + Shift + Right Arrow to move it between adjacent displays. This is a manual recovery shortcut, not a fix for the underlying memory behavior.

For basic dock-and-undock placement, start with Windows’ built-in option. FancyZones is the free next step for repeatable grids and sizes. A dedicated tool such as DisplayFusion may suit users who want broader controls such as monitor profiles, saved window-position profiles, taskbars, virtual monitor splits, or scripted actions. It adds software and configuration; it is unnecessary for many users who only want windows to return after docking.
