Last checked: August 18, 2026. Sonoma is no longer the current major macOS release, but Apple is still publishing security updates for macOS 14. Apple’s update history lists macOS Sonoma 14.8.7 as the latest release, with important security fixes. If you stay on Sonoma, install the newest version available for your Mac. That does not mean every problem reported by Sonoma users is an Apple-confirmed bug: check the exact release notes and rule out apps, accessories, networks, and hardware before assuming macOS is at fault.

Sonoma version status and Apple-confirmed fixes

Apple does not publish a comprehensive public bug tracker for Sonoma. Its Sonoma update history and macOS release notes are the best sources for named fixes. Apple sometimes describes a release as containing “important bug fixes” without identifying each one, so an issue not mentioned by name cannot be assumed fixed.

Sonoma release What Apple documents
14.8.7 Latest release listed on Apple’s update-history page as of August 18, 2026; provides important security fixes.
14.8 and later maintenance releases Primarily maintenance and security updates rather than major feature releases; consult Apple’s update history for the changes listed for each release.
14.6.1 Fixed an issue that could prevent Advanced Data Protection from being enabled or disabled.
14.6 Added support for up to two external displays with the lid closed on a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3, along with bug fixes and security updates.
14.4.1 Addressed USB hubs connected to external displays not being recognized, copy-protected Audio Unit plug-ins failing validation or opening, and some Java applications quitting unexpectedly.
14.3.1 Fixed text unexpectedly duplicating or overlapping while typing.
14.1 Fixed Location Services system settings resetting and an issue preventing some encrypted external drives from mounting.
14.0–14.2 Introduced Sonoma features and other fixes. Early-release compatibility reports covered peripherals, professional software, login items, displays, and networking; these reports are not, by themselves, confirmed Apple defects.

For every release-specific fix above, Apple’s update history is the source. “Latest Sonoma” means the newest 14.x release, not the newest macOS major version. Continued security updates do not guarantee that Sonoma receives new features or that every app vendor supports it indefinitely. Before moving to a newer major macOS version, check compatibility for critical apps, plug-ins, drivers, VPN and endpoint-security tools, and accessories.

Check your version and build

  1. Open the Apple menu  and choose About This Mac.
  2. Read the macOS version. Click the version number if needed to reveal the full build number.
  3. Compare the version with Apple’s Sonoma update history. Apple also explains version details in its release-notes documentation.

How to tell a confirmed fix from a reported problem

Use precise labels. A fix is Apple-confirmed only when Apple names it in an update description or release note. A software vendor may confirm a compatibility issue for its own product. Community reports can reveal patterns, but they do not establish how common a problem is, prove Sonoma caused it, or show that Apple fixed it. For example, the Sonoma community megathread contains user reports about sleep and wake, docks, crashes, storage, apps, and displays; treat those as reports, not Apple findings.

When documenting a problem, record the Mac model and chip, exact Sonoma version and build, app and accessory versions, what action triggers it, whether it happens after restart or sleep, and whether it reproduces in Safe Mode or another user account. This helps distinguish an OS issue from a particular device, app, account, or service.

Quick triage by symptom

Symptom First possibilities to check First safe action
Update will not download Network, storage, VPN or security filter, Apple service Check free storage, try another network, and check Apple System Status.
Update fails during installation Installer, startup disk, third-party system software Back up if possible, then try Safe Mode and Recovery installation.
Apple logo or progress bar stalls Slow update processing, accessory, startup disk Allow time if an update just started; then disconnect accessories and use Recovery if it remains stuck.
Blank screen External display, startup disk, firmware Test the built-in display, then try Recovery and Disk Utility.
External display or dock vanishes Cable, port, dock firmware, DisplayLink software, macOS Test a direct connection and another cable or port.
Wi-Fi connects but internet does not work Router, DNS, VPN, DHCP, managed network, outage Try another network and test without VPN or network-security software.
App quits or plug-in fails App or plug-in compatibility, licensing component, driver Update the app and check the developer’s Sonoma compatibility information.
Battery drains or Mac runs hot Post-update indexing, Photos, cloud sync, browser, security software Check Activity Monitor and allow background work to settle.
Unexpected restart Driver, dock or other accessory, hardware, kernel panic Disconnect nonessential devices and inspect the panic report.
Flashing question-mark folder Startup disk or operating system unavailable Start Recovery and run Disk Utility First Aid.

Fix update failures without erasing the Mac

Messages such as “An error occurred while downloading,” “An error occurred while preparing,” “macOS could not be verified,” or “The installer is damaged” can have different causes. A repeated download can also reflect a failed installation attempt rather than a new Sonoma defect. Apple’s macOS installation-error guidance recommends an escalating approach:

  1. Back up first if the Mac still starts and the data matters.
  2. Check storage and connection. Make sure enough space is available and use a stable internet connection. Try another network if possible, and check Apple System Status for an Apple service interruption.
  3. Remove variables. Disconnect nonessential devices. If a VPN, security tool, or system-modification utility is installed, temporarily disable or remove it only by following its vendor’s instructions.
  4. Try Safe Mode. If installation works there, a login item or third-party component may be interfering.
  5. Install from macOS Recovery if the normal installer continues to fail. Use Disk Utility from Recovery if Apple’s guidance or the symptoms indicate a startup-disk problem.
  6. Escalate before erasing. Firmware revive or restore may be appropriate for persistent problems on Apple-silicon or T2-equipped Macs, preferably with Apple Support guidance. Erase and reinstall only after a verified backup and after less-destructive steps fail.

Apple logo, progress bar, or blank screen

A long pause during an update is not automatically a freeze. Apple advises allowing an unusually slow update to continue; if the Mac remains stuck, disconnect nonessential accessories and follow its Apple-logo or progress-bar startup guidance. A dock, external drive, or other peripheral can complicate startup, so test with those devices disconnected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a blank screen, first determine whether the built-in display works when an external monitor is disconnected. Then try macOS Recovery and Disk Utility. If the blank screen persists, Apple’s blank-screen startup guidance includes reinstalling macOS and, in some cases, firmware recovery on Apple-silicon or T2 Macs.

Use Safe Mode to isolate third-party causes

Safe Mode helps test whether a problem depends on login items or third-party components such as cleaners, VPNs, endpoint-security tools, audio or display components, filesystem extensions, virtualization software, or recently installed utilities. It is a diagnostic step, not proof that Sonoma itself is free of a bug.

Apple-silicon Macs

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
  3. Select the startup disk, then hold Shift and choose Continue in Safe Mode.

For the Safe Mode procedure and startup options, see Apple’s startup-options guidance. Intel Macs use a different startup-key procedure; follow Apple’s instructions for the affected model rather than assuming the Apple-silicon steps apply.

Displays, docks, USB hubs, and external drives

Symptoms include a monitor that will not wake, a dock or hub that disappears, a blank or flickering display, an unexpected resolution, or an external drive that will not mount. Apple explicitly addressed one Sonoma issue—USB hubs connected to external displays not being recognized—in 14.4.1. That named fix does not establish that every dock or display problem is caused by Sonoma.

  4. Try another cable and port, then check for dock or display firmware updates and required DisplayLink software.
  5. Test another user account or Safe Mode where supported.
  6. Record whether the failure follows sleep, login, hot-plugging, or reboot.

Wi-Fi, VPN, and network access

Wi-Fi connected without internet, drops after sleep, failed enterprise authentication, or inaccessible services do not automatically indicate a Sonoma bug. A router, DHCP or DNS configuration, captive portal, managed network, VPN, security filter, or service outage can produce similar symptoms. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends checking date and time, restarting and updating the Mac, testing without VPN or network-security software, restarting or updating the router, and trying another network.

To open Wireless Diagnostics, hold Option while clicking the Wi-Fi menu and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Check Apple System Status before treating an iCloud, App Store, Find My, or Software Update interruption as a local Mac fault.

Storage, Finder, iCloud, and System Data

After an update, indexing, Photos analysis, iCloud synchronization, or local snapshots can make storage totals change slowly. That is different from a genuine free-space accounting problem, a failing disk, or a third-party backup or sync tool using space. Check System Settings > General > Storage, allow sync and indexing time to finish, and inspect large user-data locations before taking action. Do not delete system folders blindly or rely on an unverified cleaner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an encrypted external drive will not mount, note that Apple specifically listed a fix for some such drives in 14.1 in its Sonoma update history. For other drives, test another cable or port and consider the drive, enclosure, filesystem, and backup software before concluding that Sonoma is responsible.

Apps, plug-ins, drivers, and professional workflows

Compatibility problems often look like OS bugs. Check the developer’s compatibility notes for the exact Sonoma release and app version, especially for audio plug-ins, Java apps, printer and scanner drivers, VPN clients, system extensions, virtual machines, and container tools. On Apple-silicon Macs, confirm whether an app or plug-in depends on Rosetta.

Apple’s 14.4.1 notes explicitly identify failures involving copy-protected Audio Unit plug-ins and some Java applications. Older kernel extensions and drivers may also need vendor updates as macOS security behavior changes. Do not generalize an issue affecting a professional plug-in, driver, or developer workflow to ordinary consumer apps; Apple’s macOS 14 release notes are aimed at developer-facing changes and should be read in that context.

Keyboard, text, Safari, and interface glitches

Apple documented and fixed text unexpectedly duplicating or overlapping while typing in 14.3.1. For continued typing or input trouble, note the app and input method, test another app, and check keyboard, trackpad, and accessibility settings before attributing it to Sonoma. Safari rendering, pointer behavior, menu-bar or Control Center anomalies, and window-placement problems should be recorded with the affected app and release; Apple’s 14.4 release notes document selected release-specific changes, not every user interface report.

Battery drain, heat, fan activity, and slow performance

Indexing, Photos analysis, iCloud syncing, and app revalidation can temporarily increase CPU, disk activity, heat, and battery use after an upgrade. There is no basis here for treating battery-life loss as a universal Sonoma regression across Mac models and workloads.

  1. Allow one or more normal idle periods for post-update work to finish.
  2. Open Activity Monitor and inspect CPU, memory pressure, Energy, and disk activity; note whether Photos, Spotlight, cloud sync, a browser, virtualization, or security software is active.
  3. Restart and compare behavior; use Safe Mode as a diagnostic if the slowdown persists.
  4. Check battery health and cycle information. If hardware may be at fault, run Apple Diagnostics.

Unexpected restarts, kernel panics, and wake failures

A restart after sleep or a message that the computer restarted because of a problem can be triggered by a driver, system extension, dock, display, audio interface, external drive, or hardware fault. Disconnect nonessential devices and check whether the issue continues. Record the Mac model and chip, Sonoma version and build, connected accessories and firmware, whether Safe Mode reproduces it, and the panic report available in Console.

Apple Diagnostics is useful when hardware is plausible. Disconnect nonessential devices before running it and follow Apple’s separate startup procedures for Apple-silicon and Intel Macs in its Apple Diagnostics instructions. Repeated panics with accessories removed, or a diagnostic reference code, warrants service rather than repeated software resets.

Flashing question-mark folder or unavailable startup disk

A flashing folder with a question mark means the Mac cannot find a usable startup disk or operating system. Follow Apple’s question-mark startup guidance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start macOS Recovery and open Disk Utility.
  2. Run First Aid on the startup disk. If it repairs successfully, restart and check whether the Mac starts normally.
  3. If the problem returns, reinstall macOS from Recovery.
  4. Erase and reinstall only if Disk Utility finds errors it cannot repair and the data is backed up.
  5. Seek service if the startup disk is missing or cannot be erased.

Reinstall Sonoma without intentionally erasing personal data

Reinstalling macOS from Recovery is different from erasing the Mac. Apple says a Recovery reinstall normally preserves apps and personal data, but recommends backing up first. Follow its macOS reinstallation instructions:

  1. Back up the Mac if possible.
  2. Start macOS Recovery and choose Reinstall macOS.
  3. Select the startup volume, normally Macintosh HD, not Macintosh HD – Data.
  4. Keep the Mac connected to power. Do not close the lid or interrupt installation.
  5. Allow for multiple restarts and potentially long blank-screen intervals.

Recovery needs internet access. Captive portals and some enterprise networks may prevent it from connecting normally; Apple describes Recovery in its Mac help guide.

When to stop troubleshooting and get help

  • The startup disk is absent, or Disk Utility cannot repair or erase it.
  • Apple Diagnostics returns a hardware reference code.
  • The Mac repeatedly kernel-panics with accessories disconnected.
  • Important data is at risk, or there is no verified backup before a destructive step.
  • Recovery cannot install macOS, or the case appears to require firmware revive or restore.

For those cases, contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider. A single app crash, bad cable, outdated plug-in, or ordinary router problem is usually a better reason to contact the relevant app, accessory, or network provider first. Do not erase the Mac, delete system files, or install a cleaner as a first response.
