Yes—but not universally. Early macOS Sequoia releases, especially 15.0 through 15.1.1, exposed compatibility problems in some VPN clients, endpoint-security agents, network filters, firewall integrations, and MDM configurations. Later point releases fixed some documented issues, but a VPN or security product must still support your exact macOS version and deployment.
The first thing to check is your macOS point release. Microsoft documented Defender for Endpoint network-extension crashes on macOS 15.0 when Network Protection was enabled, with an upgrade to macOS 15.1 or newer as the mitigation. Microsoft also says repeated incoming-connection prompts affecting Sequoia 15.0 through 15.1.1 were fixed in macOS 15.2. Those fixes do not prove that every VPN or security product works on every later Sequoia release.
What macOS Sequoia actually broke
Sequoia did not break every VPN or antivirus product. The more accurate explanation is that macOS 15.0 introduced compatibility problems for software that depends on Apple’s Network Extension, system-extension, firewall, privacy, or content-filtering frameworks.
These components operate below the level of an ordinary Mac application. A security product may appear to open normally while its network extension has crashed, lost approval, or is no longer receiving the traffic it needs to inspect. A VPN may authenticate successfully while DNS requests or routes are still being handled incorrectly.

Several products can also compete for the same traffic. A corporate VPN, consumer VPN, antivirus web shield, DNS filter, proxy, and SSL-inspection tool may all change network behavior. That can create symptoms that look like an Apple bug even when the failure is a conflict between extensions or an outdated enterprise configuration.
Microsoft documents that Defender for Endpoint uses an Endpoint Security Extension for endpoint protection and a Network Extension for Network Protection, Web Content Filtering, and custom indicators. Its relevant extensions include com.microsoft.wdav.epsext and com.microsoft.wdav.netext. See Microsoft’s macOS prerequisites.

Microsoft’s release notes are the primary source for those Defender-specific issues. Apple has continued publishing Sequoia security updates, including releases listed on its Sequoia security-content page and later security-update page. Security fixes should not automatically be interpreted as VPN-compatibility fixes, however. They are separate categories of change.

Symptoms you may see
The failure can appear in several different ways:
- The VPN refuses to connect or fails during authentication.
- The VPN says it is connected, but websites and applications cannot reach the internet.
- Internet access becomes intermittent after login or after waking the Mac.
- Traffic works only after disabling the VPN or a security product’s network protection.
- Messages, iCloud-related traffic, the App Store, or other Apple services fail while a VPN is active.
- A security product reports that its network extension has stopped or that protection is unhealthy.
- Full Disk Access, system-extension approval, or network-filter approval appears to be missing after the upgrade.
- macOS repeatedly asks whether a security process may accept incoming connections.
- A corporate VPN’s posture or HIP check incorrectly says that antivirus or endpoint protection is not installed.
These symptoms do not identify one universal Sequoia defect. The cause may be a macOS regression, an unsupported client version, a missing privacy approval, an MDM profile that did not migrate correctly, a gateway-side posture rule, or a conflict between network filters.
Confirmed product-specific evidence
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
Microsoft documented a specific problem on macOS 15.0: Defender’s Network Extension could crash when Network Protection was enabled, producing intermittent network-connectivity problems. Microsoft’s mitigation was to upgrade to macOS 15.1 or newer.
Microsoft also documented repeated prompts for incoming connections involving Defender processes such as wdavdaemon_enterprise and Microsoft Defender Helper on macOS 15.0 through 15.1.1 when the native firewall was active. For that documented issue, Microsoft says users can choose Deny without affecting Defender for Endpoint functionality, and that the problem was fixed in macOS 15.2. Do not generalize that instruction to every security or VPN prompt.
Microsoft currently documents Defender for Endpoint support for macOS 15.0.1 or newer. Manual installations may require approvals in System Settings > Privacy & Security, including system extensions and Full Disk Access. On managed Macs, these approvals should normally be delivered through configuration profiles rather than handled individually.
Defender’s release numbers are volatile. Microsoft’s July 2026 listing showed macOS build 101.26052.0016, release version 20.126052.16.0, engine version 1.1.26060.12000, and signature version 1.455.47.0. Treat those values as historical reference and check Microsoft’s current release listing before deployment.

Cisco Secure Client
Cisco Secure Client is the current name of Cisco’s enterprise client formerly known as AnyConnect. Cisco’s release notes address macOS 15 support and known issues.
That does not mean every Cisco deployment works automatically. Compatibility can also depend on the VPN gateway, authentication method, Umbrella or Secure Web Gateway modules, posture checks, certificates, and MDM-delivered settings.

Palo Alto Networks says GlobalProtect 6.2.6 and later supports macOS 15 Sequoia, according to its release documentation. “Supports Sequoia” means the client release is intended for that operating system; it does not guarantee that every organization’s gateway policy, HIP check, certificate, or endpoint-tool combination will work without changes.
Other endpoint and VPN products
ESET Cyber Security, CrowdStrike Falcon, FortiClient, consumer VPNs, and other security products may also use system extensions or network filters. Products such as Private Internet Access, NordVPN, TunnelBear, and similar applications should not be assumed to have the same failure—or the same fix—as Defender.
Check each vendor’s current compatibility statement. A community report can help identify a symptom, but it is not proof that a product is broadly incompatible with Sequoia. The same caution applies to a Mac that has both a corporate VPN and a consumer VPN installed.
How to troubleshoot the problem safely
1. Record the exact environment
Before reinstalling anything, write down:
- macOS version and build
- VPN name and version
- Endpoint-security or antivirus name and version
- Apple-silicon or Intel hardware
- Whether the Mac is managed by Jamf, Intune, or another MDM
- Whether the problem began immediately after the upgrade
- Whether it occurs on every network or only Wi-Fi, home, corporate, or public networks
Find the macOS version in Apple menu > About This Mac or System Settings > General > About. Do not troubleshoot “Sequoia” without determining whether the Mac is on 15.0, 15.1.1, 15.2, or a later build.
2. Install the latest supported macOS point release
If the Mac is running an early Sequoia release, updating is generally the first supported action—especially when the vendor explicitly recommends a newer point release. Apply the organization’s testing and change-control process first on managed Macs.
Do not make downgrading the default response. Returning to Sonoma may require erasing the Mac, restoring a backup, or following an organization’s recovery process. It can also remove security fixes and create a second compatibility problem.
3. Update the VPN and security software
Use the vendor’s compatibility matrix and release notes, not just the application’s built-in updater. Enterprise users may need a new installer package, MDM profile, system-extension approval, VPN gateway change, certificate, or posture module from IT.

4. Check approvals and configuration profiles
On an unmanaged Mac, inspect System Settings > Privacy & Security for the product’s current instructions. Relevant areas can include:
- Full Disk Access
- Network filters
- System extensions
- VPN configurations
- Firewall permissions
- Login-item and background-task approvals
Labels can vary by macOS point release and vendor. Do not approve an unfamiliar extension merely because it appears after an upgrade; verify its publisher and follow the product’s official instructions.
5. Isolate network-filter conflicts
With IT approval where required, disable one layer at a time and test again:
- Endpoint Network Protection
- Antivirus web protection
- Consumer VPN
- Corporate VPN
- DNS filtering
- Proxy or SSL inspection
- Content-filtering extensions
If disabling one component restores connectivity, that is a useful diagnostic signal—not a safe permanent configuration. Restore protection after testing and obtain an approved update or compensating control.
6. Check firewall prompts carefully
For the specific Defender issue described above, Microsoft says choosing Deny for the affected incoming-connection prompts does not affect Defender for Endpoint functionality. That advice is tied to Microsoft’s documented Sequoia problem. A different VPN or security process may require a different decision, so do not automatically deny or allow every prompt.

7. Escalate with evidence
Contact the vendor or administrator with the exact macOS build, software versions, time of failure, authentication result, affected network, and whether DNS, routes, or all traffic fail. Include vendor diagnostic bundles or Console logs when requested, along with the result of testing each network filter separately.
Do not start by deleting system files, disabling System Integrity Protection, or running undocumented removal commands. Those actions can make recovery harder and can leave the Mac less protected.
Optional technical checks
Technically capable users can use these commands for diagnosis. They do not prove that a VPN is working, and output and permissions vary by macOS release.
sw_versShows the macOS product version and build.
systemextensionsctl listLists installed system extensions. On an MDM-managed Mac, this is primarily diagnostic; users may not have permission to change anything.

scutil --dnsDisplays DNS configuration and may reveal resolvers supplied by a VPN or filter.
scutil --nc listLists configured network connections, including some VPN configurations.
ifconfigShows network interfaces and addresses.
route -n get defaultShows the current default route. A connected VPN can still have broken DNS, routes, or application-specific traffic.

The VPN connects but there is no internet
Check for conflicting DNS settings, a broken default route, IPv6 handling, split-tunnel versus full-tunnel policy, a security filter blocking the tunnel interface, or a proxy and SSL-inspection problem. This symptom is not proof that macOS broke the VPN.

Compare VPN on and off, security filtering on and off, and corporate versus home networks. If the organization permits it, IPv4-only versus normal dual-stack testing can help identify an IPv6 or routing interaction. Consumer VPN policies, DNS handling, or corporate filters can affect Messages, iCloud, the App Store, and Continuity-related traffic.
The security app opens but protection is unhealthy
This is more serious than a notification glitch. An upgrade may leave an extension installed but unapproved or cause Full Disk Access to be lost. Check the product’s local health status and its management console; do not rely only on whether the application launches.
The Mac is MDM-managed
Users may be unable to fix the issue locally. A profile can reapply settings after a manual change, and removing a VPN or system extension may violate company policy. Send IT the exact build, software versions, symptoms, and test results.
The Mac is running a beta
Stable-release support does not imply beta support. Microsoft states that beta macOS versions are not supported for Defender for Endpoint, even though its current documentation supports specified stable macOS releases.

Guidance for IT administrators
Jamf’s Sequoia upgrade guidance emphasizes checking application-stack compatibility, including VPNs and software that relies on Apple’s system-extension framework.

- Inventory VPN, endpoint, DNS, proxy, content-filtering, and compliance components.
- Confirm support for the exact macOS point release, not just macOS 15.
- Test Apple-silicon and Intel Macs where both remain deployed.
- Verify MDM-delivered system-extension, Network Extension, Full Disk Access, VPN, and privacy payloads.
- Test HIP or posture checks, certificates, split tunneling, DNS, IPv6, and SSL inspection.
- Pilot the upgrade with representative users and network conditions.
- Monitor endpoint consoles for devices that appear enrolled but have lost protection.
- Maintain a rollback and recovery plan before broad deployment.
Microsoft notes that macOS upgrades can introduce new security or configuration requirements and provides additional configuration guidance. Profiles that worked on an earlier macOS release should be revalidated rather than assumed to have migrated perfectly.
How to evaluate security tools for future macOS upgrades
For enterprise buyers, the important question is not simply whether a product supports “macOS Sequoia.” Ask vendors:
- Which exact macOS major and point releases are supported?
- Does the product use Network Extension or system extensions?
- How are approvals delivered through Jamf, Intune, or another MDM?
- Are Apple-silicon and Intel supported?
- Can network protection, DNS filtering, or web protection be isolated for testing?
- Does the product coexist with the organization’s VPN and other endpoint tools?
- How quickly are major macOS releases supported?
- What diagnostic logs and health signals are available?
- Do certificates, gateway policies, and posture checks require changes?
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Cisco Secure Client, Palo Alto GlobalProtect, and Jamf-managed deployments are enterprise technologies, not interchangeable consumer VPN replacements. Cisco and Palo Alto publish product-specific support information, while licensing is generally tied to commercial contracts or broader security platforms. A consumer VPN should not be purchased as a substitute for a broken corporate VPN without approval from the organization that controls access.

Should you install Sequoia or downgrade?
For an individual user, update when your exact VPN and security products support the target build, and keep a current backup. Do not uninstall antivirus software before upgrading unless the vendor specifically requires it.
For an organization, stage the rollout after validating MDM approvals, endpoint health, VPN authentication, routes, DNS, posture checks, and recovery procedures. Waiting can preserve productivity, but delaying indefinitely can leave Macs without important security fixes. The sensible choice is a tested deployment window—not a blanket “never update” or “update immediately” rule.

Is macOS Sequoia safe to install now?
There is no single yes-or-no answer for every Mac. Check the exact Sequoia build against the release notes for your VPN, endpoint product, MDM profiles, and gateway. Early documented Defender issues affected 15.0 through 15.1.1, with specific mitigations in 15.1 and 15.2.
Do I need to uninstall my antivirus before upgrading?
Usually no. Do not uninstall it unless the vendor or your IT administrator specifically instructs you to. First confirm support, update the product, and verify system-extension and privacy approvals.

Why does my VPN connect but not pass traffic?
Likely causes include DNS or route problems, split-tunnel policy, IPv6 handling, a network-filter conflict, proxy or SSL inspection, or endpoint protection blocking the tunnel interface. A connected status alone does not prove that traffic is working.
Should I downgrade to Sonoma?
Not as a first-line fix. Downgrading may require erasing the Mac or using organizational recovery procedures, and it can remove security updates. Update macOS and the affected software first, then consult the vendor or administrator.
Does this affect Apple-silicon Macs differently?
The dossier does not establish a universal Apple-silicon-specific Sequoia bug. Administrators should test both Apple-silicon and Intel models because drivers, extensions, deployment packages, and hardware-specific configurations can differ.
Can I use two VPNs or two network filters?
You may be able to install them, but simultaneous traffic interception, DNS filtering, or web protection can conflict. Disable one layer at a time only for controlled diagnosis and with IT approval on managed Macs.
