Apple released the macOS Sequoia 15.2 release candidate to beta testers on December 5, 2024. It introduced the Mac’s next major Apple Intelligence features, including Image Playground, ChatGPT support in Siri and Writing Tools, and more flexible text rewriting. Apple released the final public version six days later, on December 11, 2024.
This was a historical release-candidate announcement—not a current beta release. The most important limitation was that macOS 15.2 did not bring standalone Genmoji creation to Mac, despite Genmoji arriving in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2.
What the macOS 15.2 release candidate meant
A release candidate, or RC, is a near-final build Apple distributes for final testing before public release. It is more complete than a developer or public beta, but it is still prerelease software. Apple can change it or replace it if testing uncovers a serious problem.
The macOS 15.2 RC became available through Apple’s beta channels on December 5, 2024. The final public update followed on December 11, 2024.

What macOS 15.2 added
Image Playground
Image Playground is Apple’s image-generation app for creating playful illustrations and animations from descriptions, concepts, and people selected from a photo library. It can also be used from apps such as Messages and Freeform, as well as supported third-party apps. Image Playground libraries can synchronize across devices through iCloud.
It is designed around stylized, lighthearted imagery rather than serving as a general-purpose photorealistic image generator. Results can still be unexpected or inaccurate, so generated images should be reviewed before sharing or using them for important work. Availability depends on compatible hardware, language, region, and Apple Intelligence activation. See Apple’s macOS 15.2 feature overview.
ChatGPT in Siri and Writing Tools
macOS 15.2 added an optional ChatGPT extension to Apple Intelligence. Siri can ask ChatGPT for help when Apple determines that it may be useful, and users can use ChatGPT-powered Compose inside Writing Tools.

ChatGPT also provides additional visual styles in Image Playground. This is an extension of Siri and Apple Intelligence—not a replacement for Siri, and not the fully context-aware Siri redesign Apple had previewed for the future.

A ChatGPT account is not required for basic access. Users can enable the extension without signing in, or connect a free or paid ChatGPT account. Account-linked use is subject to OpenAI’s applicable policies and account features; do not assume that the Apple integration includes every capability or usage allowance of a paid ChatGPT plan.
More flexible Writing Tools controls
Writing Tools gained Describe Your Change, which lets you give a custom instruction for rewriting text. Instead of choosing only Apple’s preset Rewrite, Proofread, or Summarize actions, you could request a particular style, such as turning a passage into a poem.
AI-generated writing still needs human review for factual errors, altered meaning, omissions, tone problems, and inappropriate wording.
What Mac users did not get
Important: macOS 15.2 did not include standalone Genmoji creation. Genmoji arrived on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, but the corresponding Mac release did not provide the same feature. Coverage that says macOS 15.2 added Genmoji conflates Apple’s mobile and Mac updates.

macOS 15.2 also did not include Visual Intelligence, which was primarily an iPhone camera-related feature. ChatGPT access expanded Siri’s capabilities, but it did not mean that Apple had delivered every broader Siri improvement shown in Apple Intelligence previews.
Compatibility requirements
Apple Intelligence requires an Apple-silicon Mac, beginning with the M1 generation. An Intel Mac may run a compatible version of macOS Sequoia but cannot use Apple Intelligence features.
- macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later
- Mac with Apple silicon, such as M1 or newer
- Approximately 7 GB of free storage for Apple Intelligence models
- Device language and Siri language set to the same supported language
- A supported region and language
Apple says availability can vary by Mac model, language, and region. Check its Apple Intelligence requirements before troubleshooting an activation problem.

- Open System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Complete any download, wait-list, or onboarding prompts.
Download delays, insufficient storage, unsupported languages, regional restrictions, and school or workplace management policies can prevent activation.

How to set up ChatGPT
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Under Extensions, select ChatGPT.
- Click Set Up.
- Choose Enable ChatGPT without an account, or select Use ChatGPT with an Account and sign in.
Signing in is required if you want requests associated with your ChatGPT account and eligible account features. Apple’s ChatGPT integration guide documents the available choices.
Using ChatGPT Compose
- Select text in a compatible app.
- Control-click the selection and choose Show Writing Tools.
- Select Compose.
- Describe what you want written.
- Choose whether to use all text or only the selection.
- Press Return.
Writing Tools can also be opened through controls built into apps such as Notes and Mail.

You can disable the extension at System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT. You can also turn off confirmation prompts, although Apple says it continues to ask before photos or files are sent to ChatGPT.

Chat history is not available. When you sign in, the request becomes associated with your ChatGPT account and is governed by OpenAI’s account and privacy policies. The practical privacy arrangement therefore depends on whether you use the integration anonymously or while signed in; it should not simply be described as universally “private.”

Should you install the RC?
The RC made sense for beta testers who specifically wanted Image Playground or ChatGPT integration, had a current backup, and could tolerate bugs or app incompatibilities. A secondary Mac was a safer testing device than a primary work machine.
Most users should have waited for the public release, particularly anyone dependent on professional applications, plug-ins, VPN software, device drivers, or enterprise management. An RC is close to final, but it is not guaranteed to be identical to the eventual stable build.
Users with unsupported Intel Macs can still use the standalone ChatGPT app or website and other browser-based tools. Upgrading to an Apple-silicon Mac is only one option and should be considered alongside the machine’s broader performance, battery-life, and software-support benefits—not solely for one or two AI features.

Apple shipped macOS Sequoia 15.2 publicly on December 11, 2024. In short, the RC’s defining Mac features were Image Playground, optional ChatGPT integration, and custom Writing Tools instructions. Genmoji was the major feature Mac users should not have expected from this release.
