Apple released macOS Sequoia 15.1 on October 28, 2024, bringing the first Apple Intelligence features to compatible Macs, plus drag-and-drop support in iPhone Mirroring and security fixes. Apple Intelligence requires an Apple-silicon Mac; Intel Macs that support Sequoia 15.1 can install the update but do not get those AI features. Sequoia 15.1 is a historical release, not the current major macOS version in 2026.
What macOS Sequoia 15.1 added
Sequoia 15.1 was an update within the macOS 15 generation, which first launched on September 16, 2024. It was free for compatible Macs and arrived alongside iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1. The headline addition was the first set of Apple Intelligence features on Mac—not the complete set of capabilities Apple had announced for its AI platform.
Apple Intelligence features
- Writing Tools: Proofread, rewrite in different styles, and summarize selected text in supported apps and text-entry contexts.
- Siri: A redesigned interface and improved request handling were part of the initial rollout. Later-announced or later-added Siri capabilities should not be confused with what 15.1 included.
- Mail and Messages: Features included Smart Replies and summaries; Mail also gained priority-message handling and summaries.
- Photos: Clean Up lets users remove distracting objects from photos on supported hardware.
- Notifications: Notification summaries help condense alerts.
Feature availability depends on supported hardware and can vary by language, region, app, and account. Apple Intelligence initially carried beta status. Features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and ChatGPT-related capabilities came in later stages of Apple’s rollout, not as part of the 15.1 launch. iPhone Mirroring drag and drop
Sequoia 15.1 added the ability to drag files between a mirrored iPhone and Mac. iPhone Mirroring also depends on compatible devices, authentication, proximity, and Continuity requirements; availability may differ by region. Apple has restricted or delayed some iPhone Mirroring functions in places including the European Union, so the feature is not guaranteed merely because a Mac can run Sequoia.

Security and maintenance
15.1 included bug fixes and security updates as well as new features. Apple’s security bulletin lists fixes affecting components including Apache and App Support, among others. It is therefore more than an AI feature update. Developers can consult the macOS 15.1 release notes for SDK and platform details, including a fix for some iPhone and iPad apps on Apple-silicon Macs that could quit unexpectedly when using DataDetection.
Which Macs can install Sequoia 15.1?
Apple’s Sequoia compatibility list includes MacBook Pro from 2018, MacBook Air from 2020, Mac mini from 2018, and iMac from 2019; all iMac Pro models; Mac Studio from 2022; and Mac Pro from 2019. Check Apple’s model-by-model compatibility list before relying on year ranges, since exact models matter.

Operating-system compatibility is not the same as Apple Intelligence compatibility. Intel Macs on the Sequoia list can run 15.1, but Apple Intelligence on Mac requires Apple silicon—M1 or later. Apple also specifies about 7 GB of available storage for its models and requires supported, matching device and Siri languages. Availability can depend on region; Apple notes restrictions for some devices purchased in mainland China or used there under specified Apple Account region conditions. Check Apple’s requirements and availability guidance if the features do not appear.

- Make a current backup, such as with Time Machine, before updating.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- If Sequoia 15.1 is offered and you specifically need that release, follow the prompts to install it. Keep the Mac connected to power and do not interrupt the installation or restarts.
Apple’s macOS update instructions explain that Software Update checks which software is compatible with your Mac. If 15.1 is not offered, the Mac may be incompatible, already running a later Sequoia 15.x version, managed with updates restricted or delayed, or being offered a different compatible macOS upgrade. Storage limitations, beta software, or an installation problem can also affect what appears. Check your installed version under Apple menu → About This Mac; a version number alone may not identify whether a beta or public build is installed.

Should you install it now?
In 2026, macOS Sequoia 15.1 is not Apple’s current major macOS release. Apple’s update guidance lists macOS Tahoe 26 among current upgrade paths, and Sequoia has received later 15.x updates. If you want to remain on Sequoia, use Software Update to see the latest compatible 15.x release rather than treating 15.1 as the newest Sequoia version. If you need the historical 15.1 release for a specific compatibility or testing reason, confirm that it is still offered for your Mac and use Apple’s instructions.
For an Apple-silicon Mac, the initial Apple Intelligence features and iPhone Mirroring drag and drop were meaningful additions. For an Intel Mac, 15.1 brought maintenance and other changes but not Apple Intelligence. Before a major system change on a work or production Mac, confirm that essential applications, VPN clients, security tools, drivers, extensions, and peripherals work with the target system. Organizations should validate critical software and update policies before broad deployment. Back up first; no macOS update is risk-free.

Update versus upgrade: Moving from Sequoia 15.0 to 15.1 is an update within the same macOS generation. Moving from Sequoia 15 to a newer named macOS generation is an upgrade. In 2026, a search for 15.1 may reflect a need for a particular older version, not a recommendation to choose it over a newer compatible release.
