Short answer: The MacBook Neo’s early Geekbench 6 CPU scores were almost identical to the iPhone 16 Pro’s, but that does not mean the two devices deliver identical performance. They share the A18 Pro chip family and a six-core CPU design; the Neo has one fewer GPU core and scored lower in a graphics test. Its fixed 8GB of memory and laptop-specific hardware also make it a very different proposition from either an iPhone or a current M-series Mac.
What the first benchmark showed
An initial Geekbench 6 comparison put the MacBook Neo just ahead of the iPhone 16 Pro in CPU tests and behind it in a Metal graphics test. The figures are close enough to support “nearly identical CPU benchmark results,” not “identical performance.” MacRumors reported these early scores:

Geekbench scores are measurements from particular runs, not fixed specifications. Later public submissions differ: one CPU comparison reports 3,583 versus 3,505 in single-core and 9,133 versus 8,663 in multi-core, while a Metal comparison shows 31,372 for the Neo and 32,797 for the iPhone. The comparisons also use different Geekbench versions and operating-system builds, so they are better treated as examples of variation than as a definitive average. Apple specifies the Neo with an A18 Pro, a six-core CPU made up of two performance cores and four efficiency cores. But the product implementation is not identical to the iPhone 16 Pro’s in every respect: the Neo has a five-core GPU, while the iPhone 16 Pro has one additional GPU core. Apple lists the Neo’s other key chip and memory details as a 16-core Neural Engine, 60GB/s memory bandwidth, and 8GB of unified memory. Apple’s specifications establish the Neo configuration; they do not establish that every part, power limit, or firmware behavior is identical between devices. There is no basis here to call the Neo a “binned” phone chip.

It is also unsurprising that a phone-derived chip can produce strong laptop CPU numbers. Apple’s A-series processors use high-performance ARM CPU cores, and Geekbench includes short, repeatable workloads that can highlight those cores. A laptop chassis, its power management, and its thermal conditions differ from a phone’s, but these scores alone do not establish how either device behaves during a long render, export, or game session.
The Neo runs macOS; the iPhone runs iOS. Applications, background work, memory demands, and software environments differ. A CPU score is one narrow comparison—not proof that the devices feel the same, run the same apps, or sustain the same speed.

Where the headline stops being true
- CPU benchmarks: Nearly tied in the cited early Geekbench 6 run, with the Neo fractionally ahead.
- Graphics: Not tied in that comparison. The Neo has one fewer GPU core and scored lower in Metal.
- Sustained performance: Not answered by a short benchmark. The cited results do not establish performance over extended workloads.
- Memory and storage: The Neo is configured with 8GB unified memory and 256GB or 512GB SSD options. Memory is shared across the system and cannot be upgraded later.
- Experience: The Neo is a macOS laptop with a keyboard, trackpad, display, and laptop ports; the iPhone is an iOS phone. Similar CPU scores do not make them interchangeable.
These differences matter more as workload demands grow. Eight gigabytes can be enough for ordinary schoolwork or light multitasking, but it leaves less room for many demanding apps, heavy browser use, virtual machines, and large creative projects. Storage speed and capacity can also affect file-heavy work independently of CPU speed.

Matching a phone in CPU benchmarks does not make the Neo a match for a current MacBook Air. In a hands-on comparison, Tom’s Guide measured the Neo against a MacBook Air with M5: Geekbench 6 scores were 3,535/8,920 for Neo and 4,191/17,276 for the Air, for single-core/multi-core. The same test reported a HandBrake export time of 9:57 for Neo versus 4:34 for the Air, SSD write/read speeds of 1,440/1,585 MB/s versus 6,499/6,728 MB/s, and Geekbench AI scores of 45,204 versus 56,968. The Air started with 16GB of memory; the Neo is capped at 8GB. The Neo is positioned for everyday computing: browsing, email, documents, streaming, schoolwork, and basic multitasking. A review described it as capable of web browsing and 4K streaming, while placing its performance closer to an M1 MacBook Air than to contemporary M-series performance laptops. Other laptop trade-offs hidden by a CPU score
The Neo’s specifications include a 13-inch display with 2408-by-1506 resolution and 500-nit brightness, two USB-C ports with different capabilities, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 1080p camera, and 256GB or 512GB of storage. External-display connectivity is through the USB 3 port. Apple advertises up to 16 hours of video streaming under its test conditions; actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Independent reviews have also noted features such as a non-backlit keyboard on some configurations and Touch ID being limited to a higher-priced model. Those details can depend on the exact configuration and region, so check the listing for the model you intend to buy rather than assuming every Neo is equipped alike.

Who should consider the MacBook Neo?
- Students and everyday users: A sensible fit if the work is mainly documents, web apps, video, email, and ordinary multitasking, and 8GB of memory is acceptable.
- Budget-conscious Mac buyers: The Neo offers a lower-cost route to macOS. Its U.S. starting price was reported as $599 at launch in March 2026; check Apple’s current local pricing and availability before buying. Apple announced the Neo in March 2026.
- Developers and creators: Consider an M-series Mac with more memory if you routinely compile large projects, edit video, work with large files, use virtual machines, or need sustained multi-core performance and faster storage.
- Gamers or local-AI users: The lower GPU score and 8GB memory ceiling are reasons to look beyond the Neo for demanding games, 3D work, or memory-intensive local AI tasks.
- People comparing it with an iPhone: Choose based on what device you need. An iPhone offers phone functions, cellular connectivity, cameras, and iOS apps; the Neo offers macOS, a laptop keyboard and trackpad, and desktop-style workflows. Benchmark parity does not make a phone a laptop replacement.
Geekbench results can shift with benchmark version, operating-system build, background activity, temperature, battery state, and individual run conditions. Graphics tests also depend on the API and software environment. Apple’s own performance statements use specified tests and, in the launch announcement, preproduction systems; they should be read as vendor results, not independent measurements.
