For the most reliable Mac-to-TV connection, use HDMI. It avoids Wi-Fi discovery, network isolation, and AirPlay compatibility problems. Use AirPlay when your Apple TV or television is confirmed compatible and convenience matters more than latency.
The troubleshooting path is simple: identify the signal route, remove intermediate devices, test one variable at a time, then configure macOS for the correct display and audio output.
Choose the right connection first
Connecting a Mac to a television can mean several different things:
- Mirroring: the TV shows the same desktop as the Mac.
- Extending: the TV becomes an additional desktop area.
- Window or app sharing: only selected content is shown.
- Media playback: a video or audio file is sent to the TV rather than the entire desktop.
These modes can make a working connection appear broken. For example, an extended desktop may show only wallpaper on the TV until you move a window onto it.

There are two primary connection methods:
- Wired HDMI: best for reliability, gaming, presentations, and low latency.
- Wireless AirPlay: best for convenient sharing when the Mac and receiver support it and share a usable local network.
Apple describes the supported display options in its Mac display guide.
Identify your Mac’s video port
| Mac port | Typical TV connection |
|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI-to-HDMI cable |
| USB-C or Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5 | USB-C/Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter or cable |
| Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2, or Mini DisplayPort | Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable |
| No compatible video output | A suitable display dock or adapter |
A USB-C connector does not automatically guarantee identical display capabilities on every Mac. Check the exact Mac model and confirm that the port supports display output. Apple lists the relevant port and adapter paths in its HDMI and display support documentation.
A USB data-only adapter will not carry a video signal. If you use a dock, its HDMI output, power requirements, resolution, refresh-rate, HDR, audio, and HDCP support all matter.

- Turn on the TV.
- Select the exact HDMI input connected to the Mac.
- Connect the adapter to the Mac if one is required.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the adapter or Mac, then to the TV.
- Wait several seconds for macOS to detect the display.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Choose mirroring, extending, or the available display arrangement.
- For TV audio, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select the TV, HDMI device, receiver, or soundbar.
On older macOS versions, System Settings is called System Preferences.
For the first test, simplify the signal path
Use this path whenever possible:
Mac port → adapter → HDMI cable → TV HDMI input
Temporarily remove HDMI switches, USB-C docks, AV receivers, soundbars, wall plates, and capture devices. Once the direct connection works, add each component back individually. This identifies whether the failure is in the Mac, adapter, cable, TV input, or intermediate equipment.
Mac connected but the TV says “No Signal”
“No signal” is not necessarily a macOS software problem. It can result from the wrong TV input, a faulty cable, an incompatible adapter, an unsupported resolution, insufficient dock power, or an HDMI handshake or HDCP failure.

- Try another known-good HDMI cable.
- Bypass every dock, switch, receiver, soundbar, or wall plate.
- Restart both the TV and Mac.
- Open System Settings > Displays and check whether the TV appears.
- Try a known-compatible adapter, especially if the current adapter is intermittent or unbranded.
- Test the Mac with another TV or monitor.
- Test the TV input with another HDMI source.
If another source also fails on that TV input, the television or its input is the likely problem. If the Mac fails with multiple known-good cables, adapters, and displays, the Mac port or display hardware may need service.

Resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and adapter limits
“USB-C to HDMI” is a connector description, not a guarantee of 4K, 60 Hz, HDR, audio, or HDCP support. The final result depends on:
- the exact Mac model and chip;
- the generation and capabilities of its port;
- whether HDMI is direct or passes through an adapter or dock;
- the adapter specification;
- the HDMI cable;
- the TV input; and
- the selected resolution, refresh rate, color mode, and HDR setting.
Apple’s HDMI documentation, updated March 12, 2026, lists model-specific ceilings that include up to 8K at 60 Hz, 4K at 240 Hz, 4K at 60 Hz, and 4K at 30 Hz. Do not assume that every Mac with the same chip family supports the same combination.
When the TV is black, flickers, or repeatedly disconnects:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Start with Default resolution.
- Try 60 Hz or a lower resolution if the current setting is unstable.
- Check the adapter’s stated resolution and refresh-rate limits.
- Test a direct HDMI connection instead of a dock.
For a compatible 8K connection, Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps HDMI cable. That cable cannot make an older Mac or adapter output 8K if the hardware does not support it.
Fix cropped, blurry, flickering, or black pictures
Cropped edges
Cropped desktop edges usually indicate overscan or underscan. In System Settings > Displays, enable Overscan if that option is available. Some configurations instead expose an underscan control.
The TV may have a picture-size setting such as Just Scan, Screen Fit, 1:1, Full Pixel, Dot by Dot, or Original. Labels vary by manufacturer and model.
Blurry or incorrectly scaled image
- Choose Default in Displays first.
- Try the TV’s native resolution.
- Check the refresh rate.
- Enable the TV’s computer or PC input mode if available.
- Disable unnecessary TV image processing.
- Test without a dock or switch.
- Check whether the adapter is limited to 30 Hz.
Flicker or intermittent black screen
Reseat the connectors, lower the refresh rate, try another input, replace the cable, and then replace the adapter if necessary. Flickering can come from a loose connector, unsupported format, failing dock, HDMI handshake, TV firmware, HDR negotiation, or HDCP negotiation.

How to connect a Mac to a TV with AirPlay
AirPlay works with Apple TV and selected AirPlay-enabled smart TVs, not every smart TV. Apple lists participating television manufacturers, including selected models from Samsung, LG, Sony, and Vizio. Compatibility depends on the specific model, region, and software.

- CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
- ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
- 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
- PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
- Confirm that the TV or Apple TV supports AirPlay and that AirPlay is enabled in its settings.
- Turn on the receiver and keep it near the Mac during setup.
- Connect the Mac and receiver to the same local Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center in the Mac menu bar.
- Select Screen Mirroring.
- Choose the TV or Apple TV.
- Select mirroring, extending, or the available sharing option.
- Enter the displayed AirPlay code or password if requested.
Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting guidance recommends powered-on, nearby, updated devices on the same Wi-Fi network, with AirPlay permissions enabled.
If AirPlay is missing or the TV does not appear
- Verify that the exact TV model supports AirPlay rather than another casting protocol.
- Enable AirPlay in the TV’s settings.
- Confirm both devices are on the same network, not merely networks with similar names.
- Leave guest Wi-Fi: guest networks commonly isolate connected devices.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or restrictive firewall.
- Consider school, office, hotel, VLAN, or router settings that block local discovery.
- Update the Mac, TV, Apple TV, or streaming device.
- Restart both devices and the network equipment if permitted.
On the Mac, check System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. If the receiver is configured through Home, review Home app > Home Settings > Speakers & TVs. A device can have internet access while still being unable to discover another device locally.
AirPlay keeps disconnecting or feels slow
AirPlay depends on Wi-Fi quality, local network discovery, receiver software, and network policy. Congestion and isolation can cause dropouts; wireless desktop sharing can also introduce latency and compression. HDMI is the better choice for gaming, live presentations, interactive work, or monitoring where timing matters.
Video works but sound does not
Video and audio can fail independently. A picture on the TV does not prove that macOS selected HDMI audio or that the receiver accepts the audio path.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output.
- Select the TV, HDMI device, AV receiver, or soundbar.
- Confirm that the TV and receiver are not muted.
- Check the TV’s selected audio output and receiver input.
- Disconnect headphones and other audio devices and test again.
Apple specifically notes an exception for Mac mini users: if a device is connected to the Mac mini’s headphone jack, audio may continue routing there. Disconnect it while testing HDMI audio.
For AirPlay, confirm that the intended TV or receiver is the active destination. Another AirPlay speaker, HomePod, Apple TV, or Bluetooth device may have been selected instead. Stop and restart playback after changing the output.
HDCP, streaming apps, and protected video
Protected video can fail even when the Mac desktop displays normally. Switches, docks, receivers, adapters, and older HDMI inputs add HDCP negotiation points.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple notes that an HDCP error may appear if the Mac sleeps while protected video is playing or paused. Close the app playing the video and reopen it. If the error continues, connect the Mac directly to the TV, bypass intermediate equipment, and confirm that the adapter, cable, and TV input support the required HDCP version.

A native app on the TV may work when Mac mirroring does not, because it uses a different playback and rights-management path.
HDMI-CEC and unexpected TV behavior
HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices control one another’s power and input. Symptoms include the TV turning on unexpectedly, changing inputs, waking with the Mac, or sleeping when the Mac does.
Apple documents CEC support for certain Macs with built-in HDMI and certain adapters, including Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and Belkin’s USB-C-to-HDMI adapter on Apple-silicon Macs running macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later.

Hotel and conference-room TVs
Wired HDMI is usually the practical option. The input selector may be locked, the usable HDMI port may be behind a wall plate or control system, and AirPlay may be disabled or placed on an isolated network. Ask staff to select or unlock the correct input rather than repeatedly changing Mac settings.
Guest Wi-Fi
Being on the same Wi-Fi name does not guarantee local visibility. Client isolation commonly blocks AirPlay discovery. Use HDMI or ask for a network that permits local device discovery.
Corporate and school networks
Firewalls, VLANs, device-management policies, and blocked mDNS traffic can prevent AirPlay even when web browsing works. If you cannot change network policy, HDMI is the appropriate workaround.
Receivers and soundbars
Connect the Mac directly to the TV for diagnosis. After the direct picture and audio work, reconnect the receiver or soundbar and test each link separately.

Which replacement should you buy?
Replace the failed component rather than buying a streaming device automatically.
HDMI cable
A cable is the sensible first purchase for flickering, intermittent signal, or physical connector problems. Match its capability to the intended resolution and refresh rate. For compatible 8K setups, Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps cable. An expensive cable will not fix the wrong TV input, an incompatible adapter, or blocked AirPlay discovery.
Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is intended for compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt Macs and provides HDMI output, USB connectivity, and USB-C charging pass-through. It requires a separate HDMI cable and lists macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later as a requirement. Its U.S. price was listed as $69 on August 18, 2026; prices can change.
It is useful when first-party documentation and charging pass-through matter, but unnecessary if the Mac already has HDMI. Its maximum output still depends on the Mac, display, and adapter path.
Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K is a good fit for an Apple-focused household that wants a permanent AirPlay receiver plus TV apps. It is poor value if you only need an occasional, low-cost Mac-to-TV connection; HDMI usually introduces fewer variables. Verify the current price on Apple’s store before buying.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K product page lists Apple AirPlay and HomeKit support. It requires a TV with HDMI; 4K and HDR require compatible TV hardware, content, and an HDCP 2.2-capable HDMI input. The U.S. page showed a limited-time $49.99 price, reduced from $79.99, on August 18, 2026. Treat that discount as temporary and verify compatibility with the Roku AirPlay support page.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek service or replace hardware when the Mac fails with multiple known-good cables, adapters, and displays; the port is physically damaged; there is overheating or unusual electrical behavior; or a managed network prevents AirPlay and cannot be changed.
